Whenever we travel, the one thing I’m usually able to find, wherever we go, is a smoothie.
Thankfully, they seem to be readily available and a great way to get in some vegetables and fruit, which helps me feel a bit more “in my routine” even when I’m not. This creamy avocado smoothie was inspired by a recent trip to Iceland, where I hit the smoothie jackpot. Let me show you how it’s made!
This creamy avocado smoothie is easy to make, requiring just 5 ingredients, 1 blender, and 5 minutes.
The base is frozen banana, which creates a creamy, naturally sweet base. Next comes the star ingredient: avocado! Full of fiber and healthy fats, avocado makes this smoothie creamy and dreamy and thick, almost like a milkshake.
Next comes dairy-free milk for a smooth and dreamy texture and some greens of choice for fiber, nutrients, and a beautiful green hue. Protein powder is the final ingredient, which takes this smoothie into meal territory. I’ve done a whole review on protein powders, so give it a look to see my favorites.
I hope you all love this smoothie! It’s:
Thick + Creamy
Satisfying
Naturally sweet
Gorgeous
Full of vitamins and minerals
Fiber- + Protein-rich
Versatile
& Super delicious
Try making this smoothie in the morning for a quick on-the-go breakfast. It would also make a delicious snack or even healthier “dessert” in the evenings. Throw in a little peanut butter for more of a “milkshake” vibe. Serious yum.

Creamy Avocado Banana Green Smoothie
Ingredients
SMOOTHIE
- 1 large frozen banana (ripe // peeled // sliced)
- 1/4 – 1/2 medium ripe avocado (more avocado = creamier, thicker smoothie)
- 1 scoop plain or vanilla protein powder (see my Protein Powder Guide here)
- 1 large handful greens of choice (spinach, kale, rainbow chard // I like mine frozen)
- 3/4 – 1 cup unsweetened plain almond milk (or any dairy-free milk)
ADD-INS optional
- 1 Tbsp seed of choice (hemp, flax, sesame, sunflower, chia, etc.)
- 1/2 tsp adaptogen of choice (maca, ashwagandha, etc.)
- 1/2 cup sliced frozen (or fresh) cucumber or berries (organic when possible)
Instructions
- To a high-speed blender, add frozen banana, avocado, protein powder of choice, greens, and dairy-free milk. At this time, add any desired add-ins, such as adaptogens, seeds, or additional fruits and vegetables (such as berries or cucumbers).
- Blend on high until creamy and smooth, scraping down sides as needed. If smoothie is too thick, add more dairy-free milk to thin. If too thin, add more frozen banana or avocado.
- Taste and adjust flavor as needed, adding more banana for sweetness, avocado for creaminess, or greens for vibrant green color. Protein powder can also be used to add more sweetness (depending on brand / flavor).
- Divide between serving glasses and enjoy! Best when fresh, though leftovers will keep covered in the refrigerator up to 24 hours or in the freezer up to 2 weeks.
Anne says
Why do you add protein powder and where do you get it
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
Hi Anne, most grocery stores should carry protein powder. Check the supplement aisle or health food section! You can also order it online through various websites (if you click on our protein powder guide in the ingredients list there will be some ideas). Protein powder makes the smoothie more satiating, but you could omit it, if preferred.
Naureen Khan says
Yeah! I tried this recipe, it provided me an instant energy and its creamy texture gave me the feeling of relaxation. Instead of protein powder, I added dates, I loved it.
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
Lovely! Thank you for sharing, Naureen! xo
Gem says
I made this but added 2tsp honey and a dash of cinnamon instead of the protein powder – yum
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
Lovely! Thank you for sharing, Gem!
Alamrin says
Why would you need to add protein powder?
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
It adds a vanilla flavor and additional nutrition, but feel free to skip it!
Jo Ann says
This was absolutely delicious. The avocado made it so creamy. I used a whole avocado (because I didn’t want the other half turning brown) and 1/2 frozen banana and it was perfect!
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
Amazing! Thank you for sharing, Jo Ann! xo

I can’t remember if I already left a review here, but I make a smoothie almost every day and this one is my go-to. Super nutritious but not fussy, so I don’t have to spend a long time washing and chopping different fruits and vegetables, which I greatly appreciate!

My husband gets cramp in his hands & legs at night so I looked up what would help which were the ingredients in your smoothie.
Hopefully if he has one daily it will help.

Stacey says
How would you freeze this and then how would you unfreeze it to drink?
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
Hi Stacey! We like to freeze smoothies by pouring them into ice cube trays and then transferring the frozen smoothie cubes to a bag. When you’re ready to enjoy the smoothie you can add water or another liquid of choice to get it moving. Hope this helps!

Today, I made this with cucumber and it was delish! I excluded the protein powder because I am sensitive to high-histamine food. I am on the elimination phase of the autoimmune protocol and this is perfect!
Thanks!

I have been looking for a smoothie that includes avocados and almond milk. This was terrific: balanced, smooth and creamy. I added 1/2 c frozen blueberries and it added a nice blue color and a hint of sweetness. Will make it again and may add cubed cucumber instead.

Wonderful! So glad you found what you were looking for and enjoyed it! Thank you for sharing! xo

I just made this using a 1/2 banana and 1/2 avocado (not frozen and it was super creamy) in my nutribullet with organic greens, hemp seeds, chia seeds, protein powder, ice cubes and unsweetened vanilla macadamia milk. I will try freezing bananas and avocados for tomorrow.
Delicious! Thanks for the recipe!

This is delicious! I am currently recovering from jaw surgery and I’ve been trying to find ways to fill out my liquid diet to make sure I’m getting the nutrients I need from my meals, as well as enjoy them. This smoothie has seriously saved me. I’m using kale as my green, and I’ve started freezing my avocado as well (because I went a little crazy when I first tried this and needed to save them from spoiling– if anyone else does this, be sure to peel and section it first). This recipe is perfect as is and I will continue to enjoy it after I recover. Thank you so much!
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
Aw, we’re so glad this recipe has helped you, Steph! Thanks so much for sharing. Wishing you a speedy recovery! xo
Rachel Perry says
This was sooooo good. My only suggestions to someone just starting on their “smoothie journey” is to peel the banana before freezing. It took forever to get the peel off frozen. I also added a dash of OJ and 1/4 cup of Pelligrino water and a couple ice cubes. It was such a refreshing drink, I am making another tomorrow. Thank you!!
Dana @ Minimalist Baker says
Yes! Peel before freezing! Thanks for sharing, Rachel!
Donna says
I’m going to try this with beet tops. You mentioned frozen greens. What would be a good way to freeze greens for smoothies? Also, is there a nut butter substitute fof the avocadoes or do you have a different recommend? Thanks for the advise.
Donna
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
Hi Donna, beet tops tend to have a stronger flavor, so just a heads up there. For freezing greens, we wash, pat dry, chop, and place in a sealed bag in the freezer. The avocado makes it thick and creamy in a way nut butter might not. But cashew butter would be our top suggestion.
Luke Blankenship says
This is a fantastic recipe and has become my “flagship”, go-to smoothie. Makes a wonderful, satiating breakfast. Can’t beat how healthy this is either. it’s simplicity is where it shines – it’s not a ridiculous combination of 15 obscure fruits from southeast Asia and doesn’t rely on something expensive like pine nuts or authentic Iranian saffron threads (we all know those recipes are all over the internet these days). It’s just a wonderful combination. It’s a creamy, muted sweetness and boasts a flavor profile that is at first vibrant but not overwhelming.
Follow the recipe as instructed and you can’t mess this up. I agree with the writer that it’s a little “better” when everything is frozen (banana/greens/add-ins). I have used frozen avocado and it is amazing, though I think it’s not a big enough difference for anyone to care.
I toss in a tablespoon of Chia and about a tablespoon of ground flaxseeds. Gives a nice texture and adds some healthiness to the mix. I have also added matcha (1 tsp per smoothie) and it’s not super noticible to most, but if you’re a matcha person you’ll absolutely note the earthiness and sweetness it adds to this smoothie. A slam dunk, and the light caffienation is good for waking up and for mitigating hunger.
TL;DR – this is the one. Minimalist Baker got it right again.
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
Aw, thanks for the kind review, Luke! We’re so glad you enjoy this recipe!
Donna says
I didn’t have avocado so I subbed with almond butter (about 1 T for one serving) plus I didn’t have enough banana so I added a tsp of maple syrup. I have a large bag of beet greens to find uses for so they worked great in the smoothie. A really lovely easy recipe for a good morning breakfast go-to!
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
We’re so glad it turned out well! Thanks for sharing, Donna!
ROHAN RIBERI says
First smoothie I liked with green. Very good. I like it better with 2-3 tbsp yogurt.
Cat says
I used soy milk in mine because that’s what I had available. I also did not have any protein powder and through a little vanilla Carnation Instant Breakfast in it (I know, not exactly the greatest choice). I still turned out great. Very smooth and creamy. If it weren’t for the aftertaste from the instant breakfast, it would have been perfect. Will definitely make it again.
Kira says
Didn’t care too much for this smoothie.. it’s probably my fault though. Instead of protein powder, I added some PB2 Powder. I also added a tb of cacao and a squirt of lemon juice. I’d like to try this recipe exactly as posted when I acquire the necessary ingredients. If I do, I’ll be sure to post another review. Enjoy the rest of your day/night! <3

Perfect breakfast smoothie. Had frozen avocado and fresh banana, but otherwise followed the recipe. Added baby super greens mix (chard, kale & spinach), and flax seed.

I would use 2 cups milk because when i made it it was very thick. But it tastes very good!

I made it with just half an avocado and just half a banana, so the avocado would come through more predominately. Creamy and delicious!

Thank you so much for sharing this recipe. I do smoothies all the time but this recipe was a first for me and it turned out great! It was so creamy and I love the color. Ooh so delicious. Instead of mixed green I used spinach and added a pinch of flaxseed. Thanks again for sharing.

This smootie was actually really yummy! ?
I used sweet almond vanilla milk instead of plain, spinach as my greens and added a tablespoon of peanutbutter! I almost drank both servings! Im fairly new to smoothies but this one is very good.

I put TWO stalks of kale in and it was too bitter – my fault. I put x3 shakes of Stevia in to try and alleviate the bitterness, but it was very KALEY !!!! Lesson learnt. I’ll do better next time – definately not your fault :-P
Victoria Burrow says
Would it be ok to use frozen avocado when a recipe calls for it? I just found out that Costco carries bags of frozen avocado which would be immensely cheaper and would insure I always had ripe avocado. But would it blend and be creamy the same?

Hi Victoria, we haven’t tried that, but it might work! Let us know if you give it a try!

So good! I added some strawberries and used Complement protein powder (almond, chia seeds, hemp seeds, pumpkin seed, watermelon seed, yellow pea). Delicious and a super way to start the day. Thank you!
Amrit Kaur says
I like this smoothie but next time I shall freeze the banana and i also added a bit of maple syrup for sweetness cuz the Kale was super bitter for some reason.
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
Hi Amrit, Thanks for sharing your experience! Sometimes the harvesting time and variety of kale can make it more bitter. The maple syrup should help or you could try another variety of kale? Or sub baby spinach!
Kathy says
Hi Dana, I’ve just finished this delicious smoothie!
I always make at least two large ones, so doubled most of the ingredients…oh, and also added the Peanut butter…great addition!
I substituted kale for the spinach, but will try spinach the next time…oh yes ..there WILL be a next time!! LOL
I love adding avocados to green smoothies, they’re perfect to keep them from being frothy.
It was creamy, thick and yummy!!! Definitely 5 stars!!
Thank you!

Hmm, we aren’t sure how that would taste! If you give it a try, we would love to hear!
Annette says
What can you use in place of the protein powder that would take the place of it. Can you any other fruit or vegetable that can take the place of the protein powder?
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
Hi Annette, though not quite as much protein as a protein powder, you could try using kale and hemp seeds for protein! Hope that helps!
Jacqueline Church says
In place of protein powder, try mashing soft tofu into small ice cube trays (or mash and freeze flat so you can break of chunks) This gives you protein, fiber and smooth texture. Works in all smoothies.
Alondra says
Use plant based protein powder! They have a Vegan one in Costco called, Vega plant based protein smoothie.
Sara says
Is the protein powder necessary, or can you replace it, or get rid of it?
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
Feel free to omit!

Dayna says
I had 2 year old frozen avocado lurking in the bottom of my freezer, and a month old brown banana lurking in the back of my fridge, I googled ‘avocado banana smoothie’ and found this recipe with 5 stars at the top of the list.
I used fresh spinach, oat milk, a handful of frozen blueberries, flax, Maca and some old coconut protein powder that I had, you guessed it, lurking in the back of a cupboard. Apart from a rather unappetising colour of grey-green clay (probably because of the blueberry addition) it was creamy, filling and bloomin’ delicious! Thanks :)
Andre says
Delicious! Being new to smoothie making, I was a bit weary of mixing avo and banana, but it tasted fantastic. I added some ice as my banana wasn’t frozen and I used kale for my greens. Added a dash of cinnamon powder too! Thank you for this mouthwatering recipe!

Love this! Instead of milk and protein powder, I put in a protein shake (vanilla premier protein shake). I used frozen kale, avocado and banana with it…. loved it! Thank you so much for sharing!
Brandon Wanthal says
Was intimidated to use avocado in a smoothie! I used half an avocado, and the result was VERY thick. I ended up adding an extra 1/2 banana, the optional 1/2 cup blueberries, and 1/2 cup more flax milk with a dash of cinnamon. I bet this would be delicious with vanilla – I used hemp protein which usually unfortunately emits a grass-clipping like taste into all my smoothies, but this particular smoothie didn’t pick that up. I was very glad.
No longer as scared to use avocado in my blender! For me, thats a huge victory because as a plant based runner I eat well above 4,000 calories a day, so finding high calorie recipes that don’t involve nuts is a huge victory. Not that I don’t LOVE nuts, but when everything you eat is caked in nut butter, things can get repetitive :/
Really love what you put out Dana – Keep it up – I’m a huge fan

Yay! We are glad you’re sold on avocado in smoothies now, Brandon!

Love this! I haven’t been disappointed with all the smoothies I have tried from your website but my favorite is the chocolate smoothie. This one also taste great without adding any form of sugar. I put baby spinach and skipped the protein powder since I don’t have one. Thanks for the great recipes!
Diana says
Holy smokes, this was incredible – I had no idea it would be so delicious. I made mine with Orgain Slim Vanilla Protein Powder and homemade coconut-cashew nut milk…it turned out so creamy and beautiful. A little too thick for a straw, so I poured it into a bowl, sprinkled it with hemp hearts and ate it with a spoon.
Home run!!! Adding this to my weekly repertoire.
Thanks for the amazing recipes, Dana – keep ’em coming!

Hi Gabriel! We have not tried tofu in this smoothie and can’t say for sure how it would turn out. Perhaps substitute the avocado for another banana as an option?
Chop4naija says

Allegra says
Hi Dana! Your recipes are wonderful and I love your site as well! How do I make this so there isn’t small chunks of kale after I blend? Thank you for doing what you do!
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
Hi Allegra! Blend the smoothie ingredients in steps to ensure each ingredient is blended completely before adding the next ingredient. Add the liquid to the blender first, then the fruits or vegetables one at a time. Add ice or frozen fruit to the blender last. Hope this helps!
Amy Frahm says
I have found that freezing your greens helps lots when putting them in smoothies. They basically disintegrate in the smoothie and you end up with no “strings or chunks” of greens in the final product.
Czen B says
I freeze kale. It gets crunchy when frozen and blends smoothly. I add it to almost all my smoothies.
Annabelle says
I had never added avocado to my smoothies and it sure does make it smooth and very thick. Great flavor even with plain, unsweetened protein powder.
Emily says
This is an amazing smoothie recipe! I didn’t have any protein powder, but I used vanilla extract to give it a little more flavor. I also doubled the amount of kale in the recipe, so I did 1/2 an avocado to balance it out. Turned out super creamy and delicious!

I tried out this smoothie yesterday with the addition of hemp, frozen berries, and maca – absolutely delicious! I was a little worried there’d be an overwhelming taste of avocado, but the avocado flavour was completely concealed by the other flavours. I loved how creaminess of the smoothie!
Andrea says
Yum!!!!! This smooth was delish! I tired it yesterday…used everything called for in the recipe (chose hemp hearts, blueberry & macca). Wow. I am making it again today.
Thank you for such amazing recipes….I’m not vegan/vegetarian/gluten free but I make your recipes often!
Cassie Autumn Tran says
I bet adding a tablespoon (or two) of cacao powder or peanut butter would jazz things up even more! I don’t think I’ve ever added avocado in a smoothie, but I bet it would add the best creaminess and thickness without too much sugar! Besides, healthy fats and potassium are really important!
Anna says
Can you make the smoothie without protein powder? Does it affect the taste?
Dana @ Minimalist Baker says
Depending on the protein powder yes. Mine adds a little natural sweetness, but not much. Omitting should be fine! Let me know how it goes. xo!
Maria says
I made this smoothie today for breakfast. I didn’t have protein powder either, but I was eager to use some spirulina powder I recently bought. So instead of protein powder, too make up for the protein and sweetness, I used 3/4 tsp of spirulina, 1/2 tsp vanilla sugar and 1 1/2 tsp agave syryp. -This was a bit too sweet, if I’d do it differently, I’d skip the sugar all together, probably go a bit easier on the syryp aswell.
It’s over all, a very good smootihe! I bet it will be even better when I don’t go off recepie.
hannah says
I made this for breakfast this morning and it was SO good!! It’s really more like a breakfast milkshake :) I used ripple unsweetened milk for extra protein + added flax and chia seeds. It was a little thick, but I think that was due to the chia seeds and the milk being thick. This has become my breakfast for the week!
