Lately I’ve been a bit obsessed with smoothie bowls (or as I call them, smoodie bowls).
The concept is simple and I’ve done it before here and here! But I believe this is my best version yet, and the trick is all in the blending method.
Come see how!
This recipe only requires 3 ingredients, 1 blender, and 5 minutes. Huzzah!
Simply add frozen bananas and frozen mixed berries to a blender and blend on low (this is key!) until it looks like Dip ‘n’ Dots (remember those?!). Then add a little (not too much!) non-dairy milk of choice – I like coconut – and protein powder if you’d like.
Blend some more on low, scraping down the sides until you have SOFT SERVE! Yes, a smoothie bowl is glorified soft serve and it’s so dang delicious. Hence the reason I can’t stop.
The best part about smoothie bowls is the toppings. I’ve been keeping it super simple recently and adding a spoonful each coconut flake, hemp seeds, and chia seeds for added nutrients, fiber, and protein.
Fruit makes a pretty addition but isn’t necessary since the entire bowl is made of fruit.
This recipe is so simple, but I hope you give it a try and love it! It’s:
Creamy
Fruity
Naturally sweet
Nutrient-rich
Healthy
Satisfying
& Quick!
This makes the perfect breakfast or snack when you’re in a rush but need something substantial (and want something pretty). It’s especially great for the summer months when we’re all looking for another way to cool down and keep time in the kitchen to a minimum.
If you try this bowl, let us know what you think! Leave a comment, rate it, and tag a picture #minimalistbaker on Instagram! We’d love to see your smoothie bowls in action. Cheers, friends!
My Go-To Smoothie Bowl (5 minutes!)
Ingredients
SMOOTHIE BOWL
- 1 heaping cup organic frozen mixed berries
- 1 small ripe banana (sliced and frozen)
- 2-3 Tbsp light coconut or almond milk (plus more as needed)
- 1 scoop plain or vanilla protein powder of choice* (optional)
TOPPINGS optional
- 1 Tbsp shredded unsweetened coconut (desiccated)
- 1 Tbsp chia seeds
- 1 Tbsp hemp seeds
- Granola
- Fruit
Instructions
- Add frozen berries and banana to a blender and blend on low until small bits remain – see photo.
- Add a bit of coconut or almond milk and protein powder (optional), and blend on low again, scraping down sides as needed, until the mixture reaches a soft serve consistency (see photo).
- Scoop into 1-2 serving bowls (amount as original recipe is written // adjust if altering batch size) and top with desired toppings (optional). I prefer chia seeds, hemp seeds, and coconut, but strawberries, granola, and a nut or seed butter would be great here, too!
- Best when fresh, though leftovers keep in the freezer for 1-2 weeks. Let thaw before enjoying.

Thank you, this was the first smoothie bowl that worked for me!
However, I have a large Nutribullet and needed about an extra cup of almond milk. Anyway, topped with coconut shreds, chia & hemp seeds, and some homemade granola for perfection in a bowl!
Again, thanks for all the recipes. They have helped me have way more confidence on my vegan journey.:)

First time trying a smoothie bowl and I loved it! I added granola, honey, and fruit as toppings :)

hello I haven’t made this yet but i’m really excited to try. me and my friend are using this recipe for a healthy eating school project and is adding granola as a topping ok
Dana @ Minimalist Baker says
Yes, of course!
Dana says
This was terrific! I’m new to smoothie bowls but based on this recipe, already in love! I didn’t have any milk on hand so actually used about 3 tbs of water, and it was fine! I added it at the same time as my fruit (all frozen- strawberries, peaches & banana) and continuously tamped down on slow speed (Vitamix). My daughter was so thrilled with her “ice cream!” We added pumpkin seeds, oats, flax and hemp hearts on top. No need for anything sweeter. Thanks for this!
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
Aw, love that! Thanks so much for sharing, Dana! xo

Thanks for posting your review. I don’t have my non dairy milk but have coconut water!!! Can’t wait to make this!
No question. Just a reply. 💗🙏💗
Katelyn Cooley says
It was good. I added some honey and oats as a topping and defrosted fruit with sugar. It took longer than 5 minutes. More like 20 minutes but it was good. I probably won’t be making this again because of the time but for the one-time thing, it tasted good with lots of honey.
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
Sorry to hear it was more time intensive than expected! We find recipes usually take longer the first time you make them and then faster once you become more familiar with the steps.
Anneka says
In the recipe you said that you top it with chia seeds but I’ve heard you aren’t supposed to eat raw chia seeds without letting them expand in liquid first. This looks so yummy and I’ll be making it for breakfast but are sure it’s okay to top with chia seeds?
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
Hi Anneka, we haven’t had an issue with consuming them dry, but feel free to omit for caution. Our understanding is that it’s more of an issue if something has an underlying condition such as swallowing problems.
K. says
Chia seeds are fine to eat raw
Melody says
Awesome!! I could have this all day haha. I had a question since I’m out of bananas now. How much maple syrup should I use instead?
Thank you for all your great recipes!
Dana @ Minimalist Baker says
xoxo! Add maple syrup to taste!
Gadir Al-shoocha says
Can i do tjis but without bananas? Is there something i can replace it with? I am allergic
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
Hi Cadir, the banana helps make it creamy. You could try a small sliver of avocado and/or replace with frozen mango. Let us know if you try it!

I tried it out again this time with vanilla extract it was great 👍 and I tried it again but with out vanilla extract and instead I added a little bit of plain yogurt on the side it was really refreshing so I recommend any of these two ideas.
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
Great! Thanks for sharing!
Jasbaani Dhillon says
This was and is a great recipe I have made it a few times but I honestly think it needs a little bit more flavour to it, maybe some vanilla extract or something els. Other than that I will continue making it.
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
Thanks for sharing, Jasbaani! For best flavor, we’d suggest using produce picked at peak freshness. Let us know if you try adding vanilla!
Marcus says
It tasted great but you have to really put in work to get this thing to blend properly at all. I have a Vitamix too so it’s not a blender issue. Everything in this is frozen and there’s no added liquid. It DOES NOT blend unless you do some serious tampering. Vitamix even specifically says in the book to not blend anything without some kind of liquid base.
I won’t be making again. I’ve found other smoothie bowls that are similar in quality that doesn’t need the 10 minutes of tamper pounding to blend correctly.
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
Hi Marcus, sorry to hear you had trouble with this one! There is coconut milk or almond milk. Perhaps you forgot to add it?

Oluseyi Babayeju says
This was a really great recipe. I topped it with cereal, strawberries, maple syrup, and bananas. It melts quickly so eat it fast. When I get protein powder I will try it again, but I guess it will taste just as good.
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
We’re so glad you enjoyed it, Oluseyi! Thanks for sharing!
Claire says
The creaminess is amazing, but until I get a more powerful blender, here’s how I modified this bowl: (1) defrosted fruit on low power in the microwave and (2) added more milk to help blend. I used a mix of strawberries, mango, and pineapple for a tropical feel. Very delicious but longer than 5 minutes to prep for me.
Dana @ Minimalist Baker says
Thanks for sharing, Claire!

i used half banana (not frozen) and sliced up the other half to add as a topping. still turned out really creamy! i also added a few chocolate chips as a topping, cheat day!

It seems unlikely that this recipe would have 0mg of potassium with the bananas! I know it’s hard to calculate, but I bet there are all kinds of essential vitamins and minerals in this smoothie bowl!
Dana @ Minimalist Baker says
We’ll take another look. Thanks for sharing, Ashley!
Aira says
Do you need a frozen banana or can you just use frozen fruit and milk?

Hi, I tried this and it was really good! But I only had almond milk and it’s not my favorite thing to put in smoothies so I replaced the milk for strawberry yogurt and a little bit of water. My blender is pretty difficult when I try to make things thick but but putting the little bit of water my blender was able to blend it. And if you’re wondering what kind of fruits I used, I used frozen strawberries, a bit of frozen mango, and half of a banana. I also put some sunflower seeds and cranberries on top and that added a bit more flavor too. I would definitely recommend making this it’s delicious!

the smoothie bowl tastes amazing but i had a problem when blending the frozen fruit and banana. my blender couldn’t blend at all without the milk.
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
Hmm, would you mind sharing the blender you have?
Victoria says
I use the nutribullet blender
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
Ahh, that’s probably why. It works better with a high-speed upright blender such as one of these: https://minimalistbaker.com/best-blenders-review-vitamix-kitchenaid-blendtec/

I made it this morning and added a 1/4 cup of cooked lentils.. It gave it a much needed thickness as well as a boost of protein :) flavour was not affected!

hello! I was wondering if I could use regular milk since I am not vegan and don’t have almond/coconut milk in my house. also can I use a hand blender? thanks!

Hello, Mrs Minimalist Baker!
LOVE your recipes! Cannot wait to try more of them! Question though: Acai bowls. I had one in Hawaii (Choice Restaurant) recently. It was “unsweetened acai puree, with banana, strawberries, coconut, and granola all topped with honey.”
I was wondering if you’ve ever had anything like this or have a recipe/post of something of this sort. It was SO delicious but I need some direction to attempt to replicate.
Thank you so much for all your wonderful recipes! I love your cookbook, too!
Jennifer
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
Hi Jennifer, we have a recipe that might be similar: https://minimalistbaker.com/pbj-acai-bowls/. Perhaps omit the peanut butter powder, use unsweetened coconut milk for the milk, reduce the banana, and add frozen strawberries. Let us know if you give it a try!
Priscilla says
I went to walmart, in the aisle where they have the protein powders, i grabbed an organic acai maqui bowl mix, literally for smoothie bowls, it’s so good! and it has directions on how to make the smoothie bowl. It was $10.64 , but i believe it will be worth it because your only supposed to use 2 tbsp per recipe, i’ll get lots of smoothie bowls out of this. Just a suggestion. But i’m also going to try Minimalist’s bakers recipe now.
Dana @ Minimalist Baker says
Thanks for sharing, Priscilla!
Haosi says
Can the smoothie be made the night before and kept in the fridge for the next morning?
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
It will become liquidy if left in the fridge overnight and is best when fresh or it can be stored in the freezer.
Laila Oloriegbe says
Very tasty!! Will be making again!!!
Asia Thompson says
I have a vita mix and still found this in possible to blend. I have no idea what I am doing wrong. Each time I try to blend frozen berries and frozen bananas it gets too thick and stuck on the blender blades. If I add too much milk it gets too thin. Any tips?
Dana @ Minimalist Baker says
Scrape down the sides as it’s blending / use the wand. It takes a little time / practice / patience!
Tammy says
I have the same issue with my vita mix. I often leave the fruit to soften/unthaw a wee bit before blending it.

I made this smoothie bowl this morning however even though I followed the instructions it still turned out like soup. It tasted good though but next time I’ll add another banana or some more frozen fruit. I added a strawberry outshine bar to give a strawberry flavor And that probably wasn’t a good idea. Great recipe and I’ll be making this again.
Mariah Crawford says
I love this recipe it’s just my blender doesn’t have a low setting it’s just high setting so mine was like the picture it was liquidy.
Talia says
I used a spoonful of vanilla Greek yogurt instead of milk, left out the protein powder, and topped with bananas, strawberries, granola, and chia seeds. I wish I had some honey to drizzle on top, but it was still absolutely delicious! My smoothies are usually too runny, so I’m thrilled that this recipe helped me achieve that soft serve consistency!
Kate caballero says
Loved that Greek Yogurt idea! Gonna try this out right now, thanks so much made it exactly like you but no chia seeds cause I’m a little allergic to those! Thank you!!

Made these for the whole family this morning (minus any protein powder). Fantastic flavor and consistency! We all felt full till lunch and energy was at max. Trying the matcha bowl tomorrow and so excited. Thank you :)
Merilla says
I loved this super easy recipe and how customizable the toppings are (I used coconut flakes, vegan chocolate chips, strawberries, hemp, chia, and flax seeds, peanut butter, and protein powder). I felt full and satisfied all morning into the early afternoon! I ended up putting the almond milk in with the fruit since my blender wasn’t cooperating well with just the frozen fruit, but still ended up with a soft serve texture.
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
So glad you like this, Merilla! Thanks for sharing your modifications!
Mimi says
Awesome! Slow-blending really does make a difference! I used banana and raspberries, plus my protein powder, a squirt of lemon, and almond milk. I topped it with chia/hemp seeds and a drizzle of yogurt. It came out so good!
Jaki says
This looks delicious! I wanted to make this for breakfast, but it looks like you are using frozen bananas. So, you actually need to prepare for it the night before? Or can you freeze the bananas a couple hours before? Thanks!

Thanks for replying!

I absolutely love and adore you! I am a vegan chef myself, I run my own vegan cafe in Lisbon, Portugal and you are a huge inspiration to me…. I have been playing around with smoothie bowls for a while now and just wanted to ask you do you think in your opinion do the bananas need to be frozen? Or can it just be a normal banana and then frozen berries for example? I have tried both ways and I just don’t want the bowl to be too frozen….. whats your opinion? Thanks again for your amazing work, much vegan love to you.
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
I think both ways work, but we love to use a frozen banana and frozen berries to get a thick consistency but as long as one or the other is frozen, you should be fine!

Came out really liquid-y. I followed the exact measurements and even blended slowly for that same reason. Wont try again as it just wasted ingredients.
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
Hi Myra, sorry to hear that! We’re not sure how 2-3 Tbsp dairy-free milk could make it so liquid-y. Did you change anything else?

This was great! First attempt making my own smoothie bowl and it tasted so good! I did mine in the nutribullet so it was a little difficult to get the right consistency but I poured it out into a bowl and put it in the freezer for a couple of minutes and it worked perfectly! I topped mine with toasted almonds, pecans, sunflower seed, coconut and banana and drizzled raw honey on top. Def would recommend and make again

I love the idea of this smoothie bowl, but I have an aversion to the taste of bananas. Ive tried other recipes for smoothies and smoothie bowls which all require bananas but they then end up tasting like banana.
Before I go make this and then waste it, does this smoothie bowl taste like banana or am I safe?

I don’t know if this tastes like banana, but I read another recipe and it said to freeze under ripe banana’s rather than ripe ones if you want less of a banana flavor.

it will not, i used both coconut water and cranberry juice instead of the milk, you might have to add a bit more though.

I just made this for the third time for breakfast and it’s super delicious!! Today I added some leftover ‘oat pulp’ from making oat milk and it worked really well, too! It’s much more filling but just as delicious.

A friend of mine introduced me to using avocado in my smoothies. Because I’m cutting back on sugar… even natural sugars I often use avocados to replace bananas and add a few drops of liquid stevia. This is a good substitute for bananas. I also use Avocado’s as a base in many of my dressings and sauces.
Two years ago I would have never tried such a thing just because I thought I didn’t like avocados. They make things incredibly creamy, they’re nutrient dense with good fats and they really have a very neutral taste.

Hi! Bananas are great for making smoothies creamy, but I have a banana intolerance… Do you have any suggestions for a substitute that doesn’t add an overwhelming flavor? I prefer my smoothies to be creamy rather than frozen-y.
Thank you!
Dana @ Minimalist Baker says
Yes! Freeze almond milk or coconut milk into ice cubes and make that your base!
Becky says
That is a great idea! I am not a big breakfast person but I started eating oatmeal to lower my cholesterol and I do smoothies too. I feel good (not heavy) and ready to start my day. I don’t always have bananas on hand and that sounds like a nice change. I can’t wait to try it.

WOW! Another great recipe. I love smoothie bowls. I frequently visit our local Vitality Bowl. They use organic fruit, when in season. A large bowl is about $15 (including tip). Thank you so much,

I came back to this site to print this and several other recipes. I was surprised, to say the least, at your comment to me. I also love the wonderful recipes on this site. My comment was just that, a comment which was a very big thank you to The Minimalist Baker! I wish to respond as I did NOT NOR did I have ANY intention of criticizing and/or advising ANYONE! I definitely believe and practice the “Live and Let Live” idiom.

I’m so sorry! My comment was not meant to be directed to you! At the
beginning of this thread, there were comments about a poster’s diet. I felt badly for that person. I messed up in somehow connecting my comment to your lovely post.
Charlotte says
No problem. Thank you for your response! Sorry for the misunderstanding.

your little misunderstanding and subsequent apologies and generalize kindness to each other made my day. ah, the internet needs more of this!

Love this recipe, similar to my go-to.
Just letting you know, I think your nutritional info is wrong. It says 2.8 g of protein, which would be impossible using any of those protein powders.
Hope that helps!

I make smoothies all the time but avoid banana since it tends to make everything taste like banana (surprisingly enough ?)…which isn’t my favorite. Does this recipe taste a lot like banana?
Maggie says
The berries overpower the banana flavor!
Dana @ Minimalist Baker says
I agree, the bananas aren’t the primary flavor. Use more berries if you’re concerned!
Yvette says
I avoid using bananas altogether because it seems I have an intolerance/allergic reaction to them. I use all frozen berries and an acai frozen blend. It tastes great!

I see you’re using a Blendtec. What setting do you use to blend on “low”? Are you just using the speed up and down buttons?
Dana @ Minimalist Baker says
I just use the speed up and down buttons!
Mali Nikoline says
I don’t understand how your blender is able to do anything without fluid whatsoever, I thought the best was to add some fluid first, then frozen stuff…
Dana @ Minimalist Baker says
If you have it on the lowest speed that should work!

This looks so yummy! I’ve actually been making a similar smoothie recently, but I definitely want to give this a try! Thanks for sharing :)

Your photos are beautiful!!! We’ve been experimenting more with smoothies this summer. We use a Ninja blender with the motor attachment on top. We simply push down to blend (aka, we don’t have a “low” setting). I’m curious to see if we can get a “soft serve” or not.
Maggie says
You can! It operates similarly to a food processor :-)

Thanks Heidi!!

Just made this for breakfast! It’s so easy and simple to make and tastes delicious! (And it’s healthy, too!) Definitely keeping this recipe!

I’m not strictly vegan so breakfasts are usually 5 eggs for me and blueberries. And I’ve been eating that for almost 10 years straight now. So ready for something different!!! Thank you for sharing this. I’m such a creature of habit that it’s hard for me to change boring eating habits.

what’s the name of this smoothie
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
We’ve named it “My Go-To Smoothie Bowl”, but it could also be called a Berry Smoothie Bowl
