The perfect gluten-free vegan 5-Minute Smoothie Bowl topped with shredded coconut, chia seeds, and strawberries

Lately I’ve been a bit obsessed with smoothie bowls (or as I call them, smoodie bowls).

The concept is simple and I’ve done it before here and here! But I believe this is my best version yet, and the trick is all in the blending method.

Come see how!

Bananas, berries, coconut, nut milk, chia seeds, and hemp seeds for making my go-to vegan smoothie bowl recipe

This recipe only requires 3 ingredients, 1 blenderand 5 minutes. Huzzah!

Simply add frozen bananas and frozen mixed berries to a blender and blend on low (this is key!) until it looks like Dip ‘n’ Dots (remember those?!). Then add a little (not too much!) non-dairy milk of choice – I like coconut – and  protein powder if you’d like.

Blend some more on low, scraping down the sides until you have SOFT SERVE! Yes, a smoothie bowl is glorified soft serve and it’s so dang delicious. Hence the reason I can’t stop.

Using a blender to make a healthy vegan smoothie bowl recipe

The best part about smoothie bowls is the toppings. I’ve been keeping it super simple recently and adding a spoonful each coconut flake, hemp seeds, and chia seeds for added nutrients, fiber, and protein.

Fruit makes a pretty addition but isn’t necessary since the entire bowl is made of fruit.

Naturally-sweetened vegan Smoothie Bowl topped with coconut, chia seeds, and strawberries

This recipe is so simple, but I hope you give it a try and love it! It’s:

Creamy
Fruity
Naturally sweet
Nutrient-rich
Healthy
Satisfying
& Quick!

This makes the perfect breakfast or snack when you’re in a rush but need something substantial (and want something pretty). It’s especially great for the summer months when we’re all looking for another way to cool down and keep time in the kitchen to a minimum.

If you try this bowl, let us know what you think! Leave a comment, rate it, and tag a picture #minimalistbaker on Instagram! We’d love to see your smoothie bowls in action. Cheers, friends!

Course Breakfast, Snack
Cuisine Gluten-Free, Vegan
Freezer Friendly 1-2 Weeks
Does it keep? Best when fresh

Ingredients

SMOOTHIE BOWL

  • 1 heaping cup organic frozen mixed berries
  • 1 small ripe banana (sliced and frozen)
  • 2-3 Tbsp light coconut or almond milk (plus more as needed)
  • 1 scoop plain or vanilla protein powder of choice* (optional)

TOPPINGS optional

  • 1 Tbsp shredded unsweetened coconut (desiccated)
  • 1 Tbsp chia seeds
  • 1 Tbsp hemp seeds
  • Granola
  • Fruit

Instructions

  • Add frozen berries and banana to a blender and blend on low until small bits remain – see photo.
  • Add a bit of coconut or almond milk and protein powder (optional), and blend on low again, scraping down sides as needed, until the mixture reaches a soft serve consistency (see photo).
  • Scoop into 1-2 serving bowls (amount as original recipe is written // adjust if altering batch size) and top with desired toppings (optional). I prefer chia seeds, hemp seeds, and coconut, but strawberries, granola, and a nut or seed butter would be great here, too!
  • Best when fresh, though leftovers keep in the freezer for 1-2 weeks. Let thaw before enjoying.

  1. Naiana says

Thank you, this was the first smoothie bowl that worked for me!
However, I have a large Nutribullet and needed about an extra cup of almond milk. Anyway, topped with coconut shreds, chia & hemp seeds, and some homemade granola for perfection in a bowl!
Again, thanks for all the recipes. They have helped me have way more confidence on my vegan journey.:)

  2. Nina says

Made this morning and loved it! Topped with peanut butter, shredded coconut, and granola. Will definitely make it again.

  3. riley says

hello I haven’t made this yet but i’m really excited to try. me and my friend are using this recipe for a healthy eating school project and is adding granola as a topping ok

  4. Dana says

This was terrific! I’m new to smoothie bowls but based on this recipe, already in love! I didn’t have any milk on hand so actually used about 3 tbs of water, and it was fine! I added it at the same time as my fruit (all frozen- strawberries, peaches & banana) and continuously tamped down on slow speed (Vitamix). My daughter was so thrilled with her “ice cream!” We added pumpkin seeds, oats, flax and hemp hearts on top. No need for anything sweeter. Thanks for this!

    • Maggie says

Thanks for posting your review. I don’t have my non dairy milk but have coconut water!!! Can’t wait to make this!

No question. Just a reply. 💗🙏💗

  5. Katelyn Cooley says

It was good. I added some honey and oats as a topping and defrosted fruit with sugar. It took longer than 5 minutes. More like 20 minutes but it was good. I probably won’t be making this again because of the time but for the one-time thing, it tasted good with lots of honey.

    • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerSupport @ Minimalist Baker says

Sorry to hear it was more time intensive than expected! We find recipes usually take longer the first time you make them and then faster once you become more familiar with the steps.

  6. Anneka says

In the recipe you said that you top it with chia seeds but I’ve heard you aren’t supposed to eat raw chia seeds without letting them expand in liquid first. This looks so yummy and I’ll be making it for breakfast but are sure it’s okay to top with chia seeds?

    • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerSupport @ Minimalist Baker says

Hi Anneka, we haven’t had an issue with consuming them dry, but feel free to omit for caution. Our understanding is that it’s more of an issue if something has an underlying condition such as swallowing problems.

  7. Melody says

Awesome!! I could have this all day haha. I had a question since I’m out of bananas now. How much maple syrup should I use instead?

Thank you for all your great recipes!

    • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerSupport @ Minimalist Baker says

Hi Cadir, the banana helps make it creamy. You could try a small sliver of avocado and/or replace with frozen mango. Let us know if you try it!

  10. Mia says

I have not made this yet, but I can NOT WAIT to make it!!!!!

I am still scrolling this website for more smoothie bowls and other yummy treats!!!!!!

  11. Jasbaani Dhillon says

I tried it out again this time with vanilla extract it was great 👍 and I tried it again but with out vanilla extract and instead I added a little bit of plain yogurt on the side it was really refreshing so I recommend any of these two ideas.

  12. Jasbaani Dhillon says

This was and is a great recipe I have made it a few times but I honestly think it needs a little bit more flavour to it, maybe some vanilla extract or something els. Other than that I will continue making it.

    • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerSupport @ Minimalist Baker says

Thanks for sharing, Jasbaani! For best flavor, we’d suggest using produce picked at peak freshness. Let us know if you try adding vanilla!

  13. Marcus says

It tasted great but you have to really put in work to get this thing to blend properly at all. I have a Vitamix too so it’s not a blender issue. Everything in this is frozen and there’s no added liquid. It DOES NOT blend unless you do some serious tampering. Vitamix even specifically says in the book to not blend anything without some kind of liquid base.

I won’t be making again. I’ve found other smoothie bowls that are similar in quality that doesn’t need the 10 minutes of tamper pounding to blend correctly.

  14. Lisa says

Genius idea! Sometimes you want all the health benefits of a smoothie but you miss eating cereal. This satisfys both desires! Well done.

      • Aman says

I made this for breakfast today. It was incredibly delicious. But never did I think it would be more filling than just a smoothie. It kept me full for way longer. I’ll be making them more often. Thank you for sharing this!

  16. Oluseyi Babayeju says

This was a really great recipe. I topped it with cereal, strawberries, maple syrup, and bananas. It melts quickly so eat it fast. When I get protein powder I will try it again, but I guess it will taste just as good.

  17. Claire says

The creaminess is amazing, but until I get a more powerful blender, here’s how I modified this bowl: (1) defrosted fruit on low power in the microwave and (2) added more milk to help blend. I used a mix of strawberries, mango, and pineapple for a tropical feel. Very delicious but longer than 5 minutes to prep for me.

  18. Sonia says

So simple and yummy! I added a little of the earth balance peanut butter coconut oil blend to my smoothie base, then topped with a homemade granola and chia seeds! yum, I’ll definitely be making this again and trying new variations!

I make this every single morning–never tire of it! I usually add more almond milk but I will follow your suggestion of using 2-3 tbs instead. I also top with some raw almonds and cacao nibs for added crunch with no added sugar. Thank you for posting!

  20. Anna says

was very easy to make, and tasted really good!
took me 10 minutes, but was my first time making an acai bowl!

I have tried at least a dozen recipes and all were to watery with not enough protein. This is by far THE BEST ever. Thick and creamy. Topped with some TVP for extra protein, shredded coconut, slivered almonds and some Trader Joe’s coconut toasted granola. DELISH

  23. wini says

my first smoothie bowl and it turned out AMAZING! i topped mine with some protein granola and it was so filling :)

  24. ella says

Thanks for the recipe it was so delicious! i did add 1 fresh banana and it was still creamy and really good

  25. Veronica says

i used half banana (not frozen) and sliced up the other half to add as a topping. still turned out really creamy! i also added a few chocolate chips as a topping, cheat day!

  26. Ashley says

It seems unlikely that this recipe would have 0mg of potassium with the bananas! I know it’s hard to calculate, but I bet there are all kinds of essential vitamins and minerals in this smoothie bowl!

  27. abby says

do we have to blend the fruits in little bits? i have an ace blender from instant pot so i cant blend them.

This is the first time I’ve ever made a smoothie bowl and it was SO GOOD. I cant believe how sweet it is without any added sugar!! I put apple slices and granola on top of mine. I usually never comment on things but this was literally so good I have to comment

  29. Ellie says

Hi, I tried this and it was really good! But I only had almond milk and it’s not my favorite thing to put in smoothies so I replaced the milk for strawberry yogurt and a little bit of water. My blender is pretty difficult when I try to make things thick but but putting the little bit of water my blender was able to blend it. And if you’re wondering what kind of fruits I used, I used frozen strawberries, a bit of frozen mango, and half of a banana. I also put some sunflower seeds and cranberries on top and that added a bit more flavor too. I would definitely recommend making this it’s delicious!

the smoothie bowl tastes amazing but i had a problem when blending the frozen fruit and banana. my blender couldn’t blend at all without the milk.

  31. Ashlee says

hello! I was wondering if I could use regular milk since I am not vegan and don’t have almond/coconut milk in my house. also can I use a hand blender? thanks!

The milk substitution is fine! We aren’t sure a hand blender would work though. But let us know if you give it a try!

    Hello, Mrs Minimalist Baker!

LOVE your recipes! Cannot wait to try more of them! Question though: Acai bowls. I had one in Hawaii (Choice Restaurant) recently. It was “unsweetened acai puree, with banana, strawberries, coconut, and granola all topped with honey.”
I was wondering if you’ve ever had anything like this or have a recipe/post of something of this sort. It was SO delicious but I need some direction to attempt to replicate.
Thank you so much for all your wonderful recipes! I love your cookbook, too!
    Jennifer

    • Priscilla says

I went to walmart, in the aisle where they have the protein powders, i grabbed an organic acai maqui bowl mix, literally for smoothie bowls, it’s so good! and it has directions on how to make the smoothie bowl. It was $10.64 , but i believe it will be worth it because your only supposed to use 2 tbsp per recipe, i’ll get lots of smoothie bowls out of this. Just a suggestion. But i’m also going to try Minimalist’s bakers recipe now.

  33. Asia Thompson says

I have a vita mix and still found this in possible to blend. I have no idea what I am doing wrong. Each time I try to blend frozen berries and frozen bananas it gets too thick and stuck on the blender blades. If I add too much milk it gets too thin. Any tips?

  34. John says

Quick and easy recipe that is very tasty. I used topped the smoothie with kiwi, granola & desiccated coconut ?

  35. Caitlin says

I made this smoothie bowl this morning however even though I followed the instructions it still turned out like soup. It tasted good though but next time I’ll add another banana or some more frozen fruit. I added a strawberry outshine bar to give a strawberry flavor And that probably wasn’t a good idea. Great recipe and I’ll be making this again.

    • Mariah Crawford says

I love this recipe it’s just my blender doesn’t have a low setting it’s just high setting so mine was like the picture it was liquidy.

  36. Talia says

I used a spoonful of vanilla Greek yogurt instead of milk, left out the protein powder, and topped with bananas, strawberries, granola, and chia seeds. I wish I had some honey to drizzle on top, but it was still absolutely delicious! My smoothies are usually too runny, so I’m thrilled that this recipe helped me achieve that soft serve consistency!

    • Kate caballero says

Loved that Greek Yogurt idea! Gonna try this out right now, thanks so much made it exactly like you but no chia seeds cause I’m a little allergic to those! Thank you!!

  37. Jamie says

Made these for the whole family this morning (minus any protein powder). Fantastic flavor and consistency! We all felt full till lunch and energy was at max. Trying the matcha bowl tomorrow and so excited. Thank you :)

  38. Merilla says

I loved this super easy recipe and how customizable the toppings are (I used coconut flakes, vegan chocolate chips, strawberries, hemp, chia, and flax seeds, peanut butter, and protein powder). I felt full and satisfied all morning into the early afternoon! I ended up putting the almond milk in with the fruit since my blender wasn’t cooperating well with just the frozen fruit, but still ended up with a soft serve texture.

  39. Mimi says

Awesome! Slow-blending really does make a difference! I used banana and raspberries, plus my protein powder, a squirt of lemon, and almond milk. I topped it with chia/hemp seeds and a drizzle of yogurt. It came out so good!

  40. Jaki says

This looks delicious! I wanted to make this for breakfast, but it looks like you are using frozen bananas. So, you actually need to prepare for it the night before? Or can you freeze the bananas a couple hours before? Thanks!

  41. Karo says

I absolutely love and adore you! I am a vegan chef myself, I run my own vegan cafe in Lisbon, Portugal and you are a huge inspiration to me…. I have been playing around with smoothie bowls for a while now and just wanted to ask you do you think in your opinion do the bananas need to be frozen? Or can it just be a normal banana and then frozen berries for example? I have tried both ways and I just don’t want the bowl to be too frozen….. whats your opinion? Thanks again for your amazing work, much vegan love to you.

    • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerSupport @ Minimalist Baker says

I think both ways work, but we love to use a frozen banana and frozen berries to get a thick consistency but as long as one or the other is frozen, you should be fine!

    • Myra says

Came out really liquid-y. I followed the exact measurements and even blended slowly for that same reason. Wont try again as it just wasted ingredients.

      • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerSupport @ Minimalist Baker says

Hi Myra, sorry to hear that! We’re not sure how 2-3 Tbsp dairy-free milk could make it so liquid-y. Did you change anything else?

  43. Rose says

This was great! First attempt making my own smoothie bowl and it tasted so good! I did mine in the nutribullet so it was a little difficult to get the right consistency but I poured it out into a bowl and put it in the freezer for a couple of minutes and it worked perfectly! I topped mine with toasted almonds, pecans, sunflower seed, coconut and banana and drizzled raw honey on top. Def would recommend and make again

  44. Christina says

Omg!! I made it this morning for breakfast and it’s delicious. Hands down the best smoothie bowl. You can add whatever you like on top. Thanks it’s amazing ?

  45. Cassandra says

I made a blueberry mango smoothie bowl. It doesn’t sound good but is delicious. I put Greek yogurt on top for my protein. If you don’t have protein powder just use Greek yogurt it helps put some tartness in there and gives you protein.

  46. Sarah says

This looks perfectly thick, smooth, and delicious! I’m thinking about getting a Blendtec because my nutribullet won’t get my smoothie bowls thick enough to my liking. Mind telling me which model you have?

    Thanks so much!

  47. Mette says

Thank you! I’ve never been able to do a good smoothie bowl. The trick about doing the fruit and slow was just want it needed! You have completely changed my smoothie bowl game ??

  48. Laura says

Quick question about frozen bananas: do you peel, chop, THEN freeze? Or do you contend with frozen peel…with a mitten and knife?

    • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerSupport @ Minimalist Baker says

Hi Laura! I recommend slicing up a banana, laying it out on parchment on a baking sheet, freezing and then storing in a resealable freezer bag!

I love the idea of this smoothie bowl, but I have an aversion to the taste of bananas. Ive tried other recipes for smoothies and smoothie bowls which all require bananas but they then end up tasting like banana.

Before I go make this and then waste it, does this smoothie bowl taste like banana or am I safe?

    • Miranda says

I don’t know if this tastes like banana, but I read another recipe and it said to freeze under ripe banana’s rather than ripe ones if you want less of a banana flavor.

I did not have a problem with it, it did take a while to beack them down but it worked. If you are worried about it you could use mushy bananas ease the process

This looks like a beautiful and simple recipe to try out! I was just wondering whether it’s possible to substitute the 2-3 tablespoons of milk with coconut water. Will it make a difference at all?

it will not, i used both coconut water and cranberry juice instead of the milk, you might have to add a bit more though.

I just made this for the third time for breakfast and it’s super delicious!! Today I added some leftover ‘oat pulp’ from making oat milk and it worked really well, too! It’s much more filling but just as delicious.

  57. Kelly Marie says

A friend of mine introduced me to using avocado in my smoothies. Because I’m cutting back on sugar… even natural sugars I often use avocados to replace bananas and add a few drops of liquid stevia. This is a good substitute for bananas. I also use Avocado’s as a base in many of my dressings and sauces.
Two years ago I would have never tried such a thing just because I thought I didn’t like avocados. They make things incredibly creamy, they’re nutrient dense with good fats and they really have a very neutral taste.

Hi! Bananas are great for making smoothies creamy, but I have a banana intolerance… Do you have any suggestions for a substitute that doesn’t add an overwhelming flavor? I prefer my smoothies to be creamy rather than frozen-y.
    Thank you!

That is a great idea! I am not a big breakfast person but I started eating oatmeal to lower my cholesterol and I do smoothies too. I feel good (not heavy) and ready to start my day. I don’t always have bananas on hand and that sounds like a nice change. I can’t wait to try it.

Your photos are beautiful!!! We’ve been experimenting more with smoothies this summer. We use a Ninja blender with the motor attachment on top. We simply push down to blend (aka, we don’t have a “low” setting). I’m curious to see if we can get a “soft serve” or not.

Just made this for breakfast! It’s so easy and simple to make and tastes delicious! (And it’s healthy, too!) Definitely keeping this recipe!

I’m not strictly vegan so breakfasts are usually 5 eggs for me and blueberries. And I’ve been eating that for almost 10 years straight now. So ready for something different!!! Thank you for sharing this. I’m such a creature of habit that it’s hard for me to change boring eating habits.
