Zucchini, celery, and spinach in a smoothie? We know – it sounds odd. But trust us. They’re entirely undetectable as they add so much nutrition to this gorgeous blueberry smoothie. Let’s do this!
This 8-ingredient, 1-blender, 5-minute smoothie starts with frozen ripe banana and frozen wild blueberries.
Next come celery to reduce inflammation and boost hydration, spinach for zinc and folate, and zucchini! Zucchini is what makes this smoothie ultra creamy. And it adds plenty of fiber, antioxidants, B vitamins, and vitamin C!
Next, add some hemp seeds for healthy fats, amino acids, and protein; cinnamon for blood sugar stabilization and anti-inflammatory benefits; and coconut milk for creaminess and antibacterial benefits.
Look at that color! Swoon.
We hope you LOVE this smoothie! It’s:
Creamy
Naturally sweet
(Undetectably) Loaded with vegetables
Nutritious
Satisfying
Customizable
& Uber delicious
This would make the perfect quick breakfast or afternoon snack. Add whatever other add-ins you prefer for more nutrition and flavor. I love the addition of cinnamon for antioxidants and spice. And I usually toss in maca for hormone balance and feel-good vibes.

Creamy Zucchini Blueberry Smoothie
Ingredients
- 1 large ripe banana (previously peeled, sliced, and frozen)
- 1 cup frozen wild blueberries (organic when possible)
- 1 large stem celery
- 2/3 cup sliced zucchini (fresh or frozen)
- 1 handful greens (spinach is best // organic when possible)
- 1 Tbsp hemp seeds (or sub vegan protein powder)
- 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 cup light coconut milk (or store-bought // or sub water)
- 1/2 tsp maca powder (optional // for mood enhancement and hormone balance)
Instructions
- Add all ingredients to a high-speed blender and blend on high until creamy and smooth. Taste and adjust flavor as needed, adding more cinnamon for warmth/spice, banana for sweetness, or zucchini for creaminess.
- Divide between 2 serving glasses (or more or less if altering batch size) and garnish with blueberries and hemp seeds (optional). Best when fresh. Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator up to 24 hours.

I have to admit I was a little skeptical of this recipe, but it was delicious! I was most worried about the celery, but it gave the smoothie a pleasantly fresh flavor. I don’t think I would have even noticed it had I not not known it was there. Going to try this on my 11-year-old tomorrow!
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
Whoop! Thanks for giving it a try and leaving a lovely review, April. We’d love to hear what your kiddo thinks!
Meggie says
A great combination of veggies and fruit for a nutritious smoothie! I was searching for smoothies and was pleased to see the amount of veggies in here. I used almond milk with a TBL of plain hemp protein powder to amp up the creaminess almond milk lacks. I read the zucchini as 2/3 of a zucchini instead of cups. The extra veg wasn’t bad, I just added an extra date to balance. Thanks, Minimalist baker! :)

We’re so glad you enjoyed it, Meggie! Thank you for sharing! xo

I never would have thought to put celery in a smoothie and was so skeptical but omg it added just an incredible taste. This is probably the best smoothie recipe I’ve tried.

So delicious and refreshing! I thought I had a zucchini in my refrigerator, but I actually had yellow squash and thatโs what I used. It was a fantastic smoothie and really hit the spot after my gym workout this AM! I will definitely make this again this summer. Thank u! I appreciate u and all u continue to offer us!

Made this smoothie today. Loved It!! Followed recipe exactly for first time but had to add quite a bit more soya milk to get it blending. Recipe definitely makes rotation. Going to add more hemp seeds for extra protein. Thank you so much!

Thank you for sharing your experience, Karen! We’re so glad you enjoyed it! xo
Pamela says
I had the same issue others mentioned about color (and I had to use fresh blueberries). But it still turned out absolutely delicious. I never would have thought so much green would be so delicately balanced by the sweet banana, and then complimented by the blueberries. Delicious!!!!!

Thank you for sharing your experience, Pamela! We’re so glad you enjoyed it!
JL Eisenhauer says
I’ve been making a similar recipe for years and it’s good to see others agree it’s a healthy option for breakfast. I am currently also adding powdered peanut butter and use kombucha and oat milk to get best consistency when using more frozen items. I also freeze whole bags of spinach for the smoothies and just take out handfuls from the freezer as needed plus I add frozen apple slices and avocado chunks, which are very affordable and available at local grocery.
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
Sounds delish! Thanks for sharing, JL!
Shannon says
I just made this today for my 2 year old son and myself. We didn’t have celery on hand and didn’t include the maca powder, but Iit was still delicious. We both loved it! I especially love that it had some veggies hidden in there with the fruit. It was thick, creamy, and cool! I will definitely be making it again. I can’t wait to include celery.
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
Yum! We love to hear this. Thanks for the lovely review, Shannon!

I needed a recipe to use up some zucchini I have and this one is perfect! I love the added cinnamon, it gives this smoothie a nice after flavor. Perfect for breakfast along with a piece of banana bread :)

Nellie says
have you tested this with frozen zucchini? any tips for freezing it? slice then freeze?
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
Hi Nellie! Yes, we have used frozen. It’s easiest to roughly chop your zucchini, place it on a plate or baking sheet so it doesn’t freeze into one big chunk, then transfer to a freezer bag or container once the individual pieces are frozen. Hope this helps!
carol Krauthamer says
Hallelujah! A delicious use for my over supply of garden zucchini. I love this smoothie. I use water instead of the coconut milk, and it is still creamy, flavorful and oh so delicious. I added a squeeze of lemon to add a note of sparkle to it. Im so excited to have a use especially for the squash that get too big. I cut them up, freeze them on a cookie sheet, bag them up, and I’ll be making this smoothie all year long. Thanks Dana!

Finally a use for zucchini. The cinnamon makes this. Appearently my blueberries were a different variety because mine looked more like a gray “troll bogger” than a beautiful blue. But still tasted great!

So glad you enjoyed it, Kat =) We find wild blueberries to be the most vibrant. Thanks for sharing!
Lynn McIntyre says
I made your delicious Creamy Zucchini Blueberry Smoothie for two. The only change I needed to make was the Maca powder, as I didn’t have any on hand, so I substituted a 1/2 scoop of fermented vegan protein powder. This smoothie was really creamy and fresh tasting. Thank you for your recipe Dana.

looks like a great recipy! One question though, should the zucchini be cooked or can you use raw? I’ve only ever eaten it cooked!
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
Hi Nicci, we recommend raw for this recipe. Hope you love it!
Amanda B says
It sounds like an odd combination BUT it is such a delicious smoothie!! I used half blueberries, half strawberries and subbed oat milk for almond milk. It didn’t even need any type of sweetener! My new go to smoothie recipe for getting some extra veggies in, thank you!

Whoop! We’re so glad you enjoy it, Amanda! xo

I have been making this all week with almond milk instead of coconut (because that’s what I have) and it is SO GOOD. I normally don’t like celery but you can barely taste it in this and I feel good having 3 veggies for breakfast. I’m going to be making this for a long time to come!

Jane says
Love this smoothie! Up until last week I had never tried putting zucchini in my smoothies- now Iโm OBSESSED. You literally canโt taste it at all.
The one thing I will say is that I can still taste the celery. It doesnโt make the smoothie off-putting, however, and I love that Iโm getting so many veggies first thing in the morning.
Thank you for my new go-to!
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
We’re so glad you enjoy it, Jane! You could try reducing the celery. Also, make sure there are no celery greens as those tend to have a stronger flavor. Hope that helps!
Tara Cockerline says
Loved this smoothie. So refreshing and a great way to sneak some veggies into the kiddos. I want to pass the recipe along and my mom is allergic to bananas. Is there anything that would make a good sub for the banana?
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
Hi Tara, we’re so glad you enjoyed it! Maybe a combo of mango and a sliver of avocado? Hope that helps!

Wow, never thought of zucchini in my smoothies! Being plant based for just over 2 years, they have a good amount of protein so Eating them in a smoothie will be a welcomed alternative. I’ll alternate with broccoli to change the greens up :-). Thank you

Made it this morning and it was delicious and so so creamy (and I couldn’t even taste the zuchini) ! I also added peanut butter and fresh ginger as I’m addicted, but yes definitely one I will be doing regularly, thank you :D
Rebecca Behr says
I made this using protein powder in place of hemp seeds, amazing grass in place of the greens and homemade cashew milk in place of the coconut milk. Only my blueberries were frozen so I added a few ice cubes. It was SO GOOD. I can’t believe how many veggies are in there!

This was surprisingly so good!! I had some zucchini I needed to use up and saw you post this in your insta story. Thought Iโd give it a shot!!
I made a few substitutions: didnโt have any celery so I added extra zucchini, used Ripple pea beverage instead of coconut milk (extra protein) and used Canadian protein vegan vanilla protein powder, skipped the maca
So good!! Not overly sweet which I really liked, if you want it sweeter maybe add a little maple syrup! The cinnamon was the perfect touch.

I…. am… astounded…
I first saw this recipe in early March and made a note of it because it sounded rather interesting… Flash forward several months and I’m dealing with overgrown zucchini from my garden and the only frozen fruit I have is blueberries (usually I do mostly strawberries and blackberries)…. I happened to remember this recipe, googled it… and the rest is history… I had most of the ingredients, zucchini (clearly), frozen blueberries, frozen banana, celery, hemp, I subbed 30g of lacinato kale for the spinach, subbed coconut shreds and more zucchini for the coconut milk, subbed coriander, cardamom, and ginger for the cinnamon, and just left off the maca for this go around.
Truly… I am astounded…
I normally like really sweet, banana heavy smoothie bowls… But this was lightly sweet, refreshing, and even tasty… I topped it with 1 TB of ground flax for the health boost and truly enjoyed the whole thing.
I did pop the zucchini in the freezer once I knew I was going to try the recipe so my chunks were well on their way to being frozen by the time I used them… And I’m already freezing more zucchini chunks for my next smoothie…
This one is a keeper…
Thanks, so much, Dana!

This looks great (especially since we get an organic veggie box delivered every two weeks, and if it includes zucchini I’m in a bind because hubs hates the taste) – but I was wondering, do you peel the zucchini or just blend with the peel on? Thanks!

Peel on!

Great! So Creamy! Since I made this the first time a few weeks ago I have made it multiple times for myself and my fiance. It is now our favorite smoothie. I hate celery so I love that I can’t even taste it in here. Thank you!

I just popped this in the freezer in smoothie packs. Does anyone know if its creamy enough to use as a base for a smoothie bowl? I would love to use it like that but not sure if the consistency would hold up. Thanks!

Yes, that should work! If you want to make it even creamier, you can always add more banana!

I just read your blog and this recipe and had to jump up and make it. I love smoothies! This was really good! I never would have thought to put zucchini or celery in the smoothie. I typically use one or a combination of kale/spinach/romaine lettuce with my fruit. I didn’t have wild blueberries but I used regular ones, almond milk instead of the coconut milk and added matcha powder to the recipe. This was so yummy! I can’t wait to see what my husband thinks of this smoothie. I’m not telling him the ingredients. Will be making this again. Thanks!

I have made this smoothie two times already, and I love it! I subsituted rapini instead of spinach, almond milk instead of coconut milk and vegan protein powder with a coconut flavour instead of hemp seeds, just because these were the ingredients I had handy, and it was delicious! My husband who usually does not care for smoothies with greens in them loved it!

I made this and it was so delicious! I subbed out coconut milk for almond milk (since I have coconut allergies) and I didnโt have hemp on hand so I did chia seeds instead and so good! So good! Iโve been adding veggies to smoothies, but have never thought to add celery or zucchini. I had one this afternoon, and it kept me energized and full through a 2 mile run and a45 minute kickboxing class. I make smoothie packs and stash them in the freezer so when I prepped I split the ingredients into 2 bags. The cinnamon was a great addition. I also add a 1/4 tsp of turmeric and 2 T chia seeds, and did almond milk because that is what i had. Yum!

Thanks, Michelle!

HEY!
Sounds delicious! Howeve, please be aware that raw zucchini can be difficult to digest to some and can produce devastating stomach pains as a result. Maybe try consuming a bite and waiting to see how you feel or just lightly steaming it before adding it to your smoothie. I learned this the hard way during my raw food phase while eating some delicious โlasagnaโ made with strips of raw zucchini. ??โโ๏ธ

Just made this tonight and I love it! The maca is a great touch. Thank you Dana! When you freeze bananas do you cut them first? If so, what do you store them in while they are in the freezer?
I have tried freezing whole bananas in the past and have had a hard time peeling them to use.
Amanda says
Peel and slice them first, then freeze. I store mine in a Tupperware-type container.
Megan says
if storing in a container, I would lay out the sliced bananas in a single layer on a sheet pan til frozen. then put them in the container.

I was very skeptical about this smoothie because of the celery and zucchini…I like them but just usually in a stir fry or soup. So happy I was wrong ! I was floored at how delicious it was. I added a bit too much spinach so the color was a bit off but otherwise I loved it. Thank you for this recipe!
Lauren H. says
Do you freeze your zucchini cooked or raw?
Support @ Minimalist Baker says
Raw! Simply chop it into pieces, place in a freezer-safe container or ziplock bag and toss in the freezer.
Alyssa says
So, I was a bit skeptical of this smoothie after reading the ingredients. I went grocery shopping yesterday and forgot some ingredients for my typical smoothies (frozen strawberries, frozen cherries, etc). I had a huge bag of wild blueberries that I didnโt know what to do with a few extra zucchini for a minestrone soup that Iโm making today. Needless to say, I made this smoothie and cannot believe how tasty it is! And I felt great after drinking it for breakfast post-workout. This will be my go to smoothie all week! Thanks Dana! ?
Kate says
Loved the glasses your served your gorgeous smoothie in. Wonder where theyโre from??

Any suggestions for a substitute for banana? (non-dairy)
Emily Button says
I use mango any time bananas are used in a smoothie recipe. I have tried for years to like banana, but I just donโt.
Nancy Ray says
Thank you for that question! Unfortunately I am deathly allergic to bananas, so I too would like to have a suggestion for substituting bananas. I’m also allergic to papaya and avocado. (All related too my latex allergy.) Anyone out there with some ideas?
lena says
baked sweet potato or butternut squash make a lovely starchy smoothy base similar to bananas!!
Brenda says
Fabulous – very much worth swooning over. THANK YOU!
Melissa says
This was great! 4 year old approved and I usually cannot sneak hemp seeds by him. I used soy milk and water since we don’t have coconut milk. I’m also freezing some into popsicles for the teething baby.
Curt says
I make smoothies almost everyday for breakfast. Spinach is a usual ingredient along with hemp seeds tossed in the blender. I like the zucchini idea. I’ve found you can add pretty much whatever veggies you have around along with the stronger tasting berries. Costcos anti oxident berry blend is a good option that includes blueberries.
Vanessa says
Hi Dana!
If the coconut milk is store bought, do you recommend the type from a carton or a can?
Thank you in advance!
B says
Can! The carton tetra packaging is rinsed with hydrogen peroxide before filling ? leaching into your delectable nut milk, destroying your gut bacteria after ingestion, and, once rinsed down the manufactureโs drain, wreaks havoc on our water systems. (I am a grocery manager at a small farm store and we abhor tetra packaging. Work is being done to have it banned in our community, to start)
Thera says
However, some cans contain BPA, so there’s a trade-off to consider.
Robyn says
I got home and didn’t know what to make for lunch. This was perfect! I love the flavor combo of blueberries, cinnamon, and coconut milk. The only change I made was using fresh blueberries since that’s what I had on hand. Thank you for another delicious recipe!
Mary strawberry says
Why do we have to use frozen ingredients? What is wrong with fresh?
Alice says
Frozen makes it cold and super creamy trust me itโs so worth it!
Mary says
Thank you, Alice! Will give it a try ( I usually do not like cold drinks)
Elisha says
I would go with fresh when possible. Cold drinks/food slow down oneโs digestion.
