And it couldn’t be simpler! Made with just 1 blender, 3 ingredients, and 5 minutes, this smoothie is bright, fruity, and detoxifying. Let me show you how it’s done!

Raw beets are a nutritional powerhouse known for their ability to aid detoxification. That’s reason enough to love them aside from their gorgeous magenta hue.

Combined with strawberries for sweetness, beets create a vibrant, pink smoothie packed with plant-based fiber, iron, folate, and vitamin C.

Banana adds potassium and plant-based creaminess, and apple juice brings everything together while adding a subtle sweetness and even more vitamin C. Serious yum.

Detoxifying Beet & Berry Smoothie

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup peeled + chopped raw beet (organic when possible)
  • 1 ⅓ cup frozen strawberries (if fresh, add ice // organic when possible)
  • 1/4 ripe frozen banana (optional // peeled + sliced)
  • 2/3 cup fresh apple juice (recipe in our cookbook!)
  • Fresh mint or shredded coconut (for garnish // optional)

Instructions

  • Add beet, strawberries, banana (optional for sweetness) and apple juice to a blender and blend on high until creamy and smooth, scraping down sides as needed.
  • Taste and adjust flavor as needed, adding more banana for sweetness, apple juice to thin, or strawberries for a more intense fruit flavor.
  • Divide between two serving glasses and enjoy. Optional: Garnish with banana slices, fresh mint, and/or shredded coconut. Best when fresh, though leftovers will keep covered in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Freeze leftovers in ice cube trays or popsicle molds for an afternoon pick-me-up.

    Tried this with applesauce + water instead of apple juice because that’s what I had and it was excellent! Put the mint right in the blender and it came out really refreshing. Going to have it again tomorrow!

      We haven’t tried it, but maybe? You would need to reduce the amount of total liquid though otherwise it will be runny.

    I modified a bit the recipe for 2: 1 small beet (double the recipe), frozen strawberries, double frozen bananas, coconut milk and cherry/apple juice. Was delicious and my boyfriend said is his favorite smoothie so far! Thank you :))

    Recipe looks amazing! If you’re not a banana fan, what’s a good substitute? I see banana as a base in a lot of recipes including this one so I thought I would ask.

    That hit the spot after a walk in the sunshine.
    I only had frozen beets and frozen mixed berries but it was a lovely combo. I had to use twice as much apple juice to get it to blend due to frozen beets maybe??
    Topped it with the shredded coconut just for fun.

    Thank you so much for this idea!! I’ve been wanting to use beets more, and this was the inspiring kick I needed!! I’m not one to measure – and the fastest way is the best for me, so here’s what I did:

    – 1 beet
    – 1 apple
    – 1 mason jar frozen strawberries
    – 1 mason jar unsweetened oat milk (still a bit sweet!)

    Filled 2 mason jars perfectly! The oat milk def added a distinct flavour and sweetness, which was great. It was fairly liquidy – use less if you’d prefer a thicker smoothie.

    I made this last week, with rice milk instead of apple juice to keep my sugar intake somewhat lower. It was so incredibly good, I’m graving it again! I think I’l blend some fresh mint into it today. Thanks for the recipe, Dana!

    My 5 yo called this “beet-licious”! He and I have been known to put down some beets, but when it’s a 1000 degrees who wants to cook down beets for an hour? This is such refreshing way to enjoy beets! I cut the juice a little and ended up adding more water, mostly to make it easier for him to drink. Thank you for another great recipe!

    Great smoothie and a way to get my husband to eat veggies. Sweet and refreshing, you can taste the beets but it is very mild. Love the color as well. I will definitely make this again. I did add the frozen 1/4 banana. I also added about 1/4-1/2 cup of water as my blender/shake maker needed the extra liquid.

    This is was so simple and delicious! I sometimes over complicate smoothies :D I forgot apples, so I substituted coconut water and it was delicious! It felt light enough to have as a snack rather than breakfast for me! Thank you~

    Made it with some tweaks:
    – used more beets (one whole);
    – applesauce instead of apple juice;
    – threw in a handful of baby spinach;
    – a few frozen grapes and couple of peach slices along with strawberries.
    Result: YUM! and the colour is mesmerizing :))

    Reviewing – DELICIOUS and sweet and really satisfying.
    Reporting back – see my question below: I had no strawberries, so used some frozen blueberries instead plus some frozen green bananas (I always use unripe) as my fresh fruit. And I DID try 1 scoop of my vegan protein powder (NuZest Clean Lean Vanilla) and I took your suggestion to skip the apple juice in that case, subbing unsweetened almond-cashew milk. It was wonderful!
    NOTE: adding several mint leaves to the blender with everything gave it an extra POP of sweetness! I add mint (or fresh ginger) to most of my smoothies.

    Dude I love your recipes but please don’t fall for pseudoscience in an effort to make them pop more. There is no such thing as a detox, to claim there is is just dangerous and misinformed.

      Hey, thanks for the feedback. The reason we used that term is beets contain phytonutrients called betalains that increase enzymes that aid the liver in detoxifying the body. Yes, our bodies detox naturally, but when given the right foods it can do its job more efficiently.

    This smoothie is delicious and filling. I make it for breakfast and drink it on the way to work. Sometimes I add other fruit like pineapple and blueberries. A full five plus rating!!!

      Hmm, you could swap the apple juice for dairy-free milk or water? And skip the banana.

    I need something like this as a light detox lunch so I’m thinking I’ll add a scoop of my vegan protein powder. (NuZest Clean Lean Protein Powder). Thoughts? Any suggestions as to how to make this optimally tasty with the right texture and feel?

      I think with a little protein powder it would be great! You may want to skip the apple juice and just do water or nut milk in that case so you can control the sweetness. Let us know how it goes!
