When golden milk cravings strike, there’s hardly time to fuss with getting out all the spices, which is why I recently made my own “mix.”

Because I enjoy golden milk most afternoons, I’ve been using my mix almost daily! It’s the perfection solution to help speed the golden milk process along to save time and energy. Let me show you how.

Ginger, turmeric, and other spices for making our homemade golden milk mix recipe

This 4-ingredient, 5-minute mix is made of the 4 basic spices added to most golden milk*: turmeric, cinnamon, black pepper, and ginger.

The result is an earthy, spicy, comforting blend that pairs perfectly with dairy-free milk and a little sweetener.

In the winter, I’m all about the hot golden milk, but when summertime comes, I crave things that help me stay cool. In the instructions, you’ll see tips on how to make both hot and cold golden milk, depending on what climate (and mood) you’re experiencing.

Lately, I’ve been preferring this quick mix over getting out all the spices and grating fresh ginger for my daily dose of golden milk. The simplicity of it – and the flavor! – has me hooked. A mixture of the 4 basic golden milk spices so you can easily prepare golden milk whenever the craving strikes. Perfect for both iced and hot golden milk.

Ingredients

GOLDEN MILK MIX

  • 4 Tbsp ground turmeric
  • 2 tsp ground ginger (plus more to taste)
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon (plus more to taste)
  • 1 tsp ground black pepper (plus more to taste)

ADD-INS (optional)

  • 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp ground clove

TO MAKE GOLDEN MILK

  • 1 heaped tsp Golden Milk Mix (recipe above)
  • 1-2 tsp sweetener of choice (we prefer maple syrup // or stevia to taste)
  • 2 tsp hot water
  • 1 cup dairy-free milk (we find light coconut milk to work best here)

Instructions

  • To make mix, add all spices (add-ins optional) to a small jar and shake or stir thoroughly to combine. Will keep at room temperature up to 3 months. Or you can store it in the refrigerator if you prefer. Double the recipe if you intend to use it daily (it goes fast!).
  • To make HOT golden milk, add 1 heaped tsp Golden Milk Mix, 1-2 tsp sweetener of choice (more or less to taste), and 2 tsp water to a small saucepan. Use a spoon to mix into a loose paste (you want as few clumps as possible). Then add dairy-free milk of choice and whisk to combine. Heat over medium heat until just hot/warm (not boiling). 
  • To make ICED* golden milk, add 1 heaped tsp Golden Milk Mix, 1-2 tsp sweetener of choice (more or less to taste), and 2 tsp water to a serving glass. Use a spoon to mix into a loose paste (you want as few clumps as possible). Then add several big ice cubes and top with dairy-free milk of choice. Stir to combine.
  • In addition to being used to make golden milk, we also think it makes a delicious spice mix for vegetables, soups, smoothies, and more!

    Golden milk has become my nightly beverage. I love your mix and always make it with nutmeg and cloves – delish! I sometimes stir in some ashwagandha or reishi mushroom powder in my mug for added benefits. I use organic oat milk (just oats and water) and heat it with a bit of coconut oil. The oat milk is sweet enough that I don’t need to add additional sweetener. I enjoy it made with coconut milk too. Love all your recipes! Thank you, Dana!

      Hi Shoshana, we don’t have recommended amounts as we wouldn’t recommend fresh in this recipe as it will spoil the batch and be quite clumpy. You can use fresh ginger in golden milk, but it needs to be strained out of the milk as it will be quite fibrous.

    Hello! Very excited to try this! I have noticed that turmeric powder pills give me heartburn, even when taken after a meal. Any tips for avoiding that with this mix? Also, I have a lovely Penney’s ground pepper, but it’s a pretty fine grind. Any idea how much of that to use? I noticed from other comments that it helps with absorption of the other ingredients.

      Mary, that pepper should be fine. As for the turmeric and heart burn, maybe try a lesser amount and work your way up?

    Just started exercising and eating right and my nutricionists suggest this drink for my joints and obviously my bloating, it took me a while to find a receip to make it myself since its a little difficult to find in México and the list of ingredients is just endless… just had it this morning and I really enjoyed it!!!     Woww yeah this is a great golden mylk mix, Thank you for the inspiration to make it properly at last !! (i failed miserably to find a good ingredient in the past) Loving the nutmeg and cloves along with all the other magical spices! A trick i learned once with turmeric chia’s (only if you want to warm things up on a cool winters day, or whenever you feel the need) is to add the tinniest pinch of chilli powder or flakes to the chia when boiled/blended an ready to drink.. give it a go and trust it takes a while to get the proportions correct ;)
    Ow and heads up to all us crazy on it Organic herbalists out there, if you use Organic powders there always going to be more flavorsome than non-organics!! ‘I’m finding 1/4tsp of finished organic powder mix is ample to a cup of liquid nuts! Thank you again for getting me on this golden mix elixar , am gonna try liquefy it next!

    Hello!
    I recently bought a small bag of pre-made golden milk mix – just turmeric, cinnamon, and ginger – and it tastes great when mixed with a little almond milk. I would like to make the mixture myself (less expensive!) so was searching for a recipe to find the proper proportions. I’m not crazy about pepper and am wondering if golden milk has all the benefits without including the pepper!

      Hi Liz, the pepper helps with absorption of the other spices (especially the turmeric), but it should still be great without it!

        Thank you. I want to make the most of the healing qualities but need to enjoy it, too! So I will TRY a little pepper but suspect I may end up going pepper-less.
        By the way, I’ve been mixing the golden milk I bought with a tiny bit of maple syrup and cold almond milk. I think it tastes great.

    First I’d like to say this recipe is delicious. I always read through the comments to get tips on what other people add ,swap out , etc. I wanted to leave a comment regarding this mix that might help other readers get it to blend. I used my Matcha tea bamboo whisk when preparing this and it blended much better than using just a regular whisk. On the advice of other commenters, I also use a spoon to stir halfway through while drinking it hot. Both of these combined has made a much more enjoyable drinking experience. I also blended this into a smoothie after reading other comments. I used a heaping teaspoon of the mix, a cup of almond milk, two frozen bananas, a teaspoon of Maca powder, a teaspoon of vanilla and agave nectar to sweeten. One of the best smoothies I’ve ever made so I wanted to pass it along . Enjoy!

    Just made this and it is very good! The only alterations that I made were cutting down on the pepper just a bit, but accidentally adding 1/4 tsp. each of nutmeg and cloves, due to a measuring error.
    Since I wanted it to be portable so I can make it at work, I added 4 tbsp. each, of coconut milk powder and powdered milk, since I had them here and need to use them up.
    Very good and super easy!

    Clearly I did something wrong! I’ve tried several recipes for golden milk and cannot find one that is smooth and with the “right” flavor. I made a double batch of this mix adding in nutmeg and cloves, and it tastes like just turmeric and pepper. The milk I used was almond, and I melted in a teaspoon of coconut oil for extra absorption help. Any idea what happened or have any suggestions? I’m giving it 5 stars because I’m sure I messed up somewhere. ?

        It sure is possible. I wondered that myself, but the milk was quite a deep yellow, as well. I used a ‘heaping tsp’ in an 8-ounce cup of milk. Any suggestions on how I might rescue the mix? Doubling it made a lot. :)

          Maybe try buying spices from bulk bins at a health food store if possible- they tend to be more fresh! Then add more ground cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves to taste. Hope that helps!

    Love the zing you get when you take the first sip of this drink! It’s great for waking up in the morning, and molasses goes perfectly as a sweetener and an extra boost in iron. I added mushroom powder to mine and it turned out great ❤️ Definitely my new favorite morning drink

    Delicious! I have always been a sucker for Starbucks chai latte because of the warmth and full feeling it gives me. I love this golden milk recipe because it gives me the same feeling as my chai latte with a whole lot more nutrition! It tastes great, is easy to make, and gives me energy. Definitely worth the 5 minutes it takes to make.

      I very much enjoy this recipe and quadruple the recipe, making up a jar so I have a supply for a bit. I just realized I have been using 2 tsp in each serving haha. I guess I like it spicy. It’s been delicious anyway.

      Modifications I have made would be that I didn’t have optional ingredients so I substituted 1/4 tsp pumpkin pie spice. When I make my drink I use a teaspoon of raw honey, a heaping tbsp of powdered coconut milk, 2 tsp golden milk mix and hot water from the Keurig (large serving) all in the magic bullet and pour into a tall mug for a foamy rich drink… Deliciousness!!!

    I throw a spoonful of the mix in with my protein powder and shake it up in a blender bottle. I have endometriosis and I swear the turmeric and ginger cut down on the inflammation, and it’s delicious!

    Nutritious, delicious and easy to do. I don’t use hot water, I heat my SOY milk (soy has more ‘body’ than coconut milk) on the stove, an add the concoction to it when its warm enough. Two packets of Trivia and it’s good tasting.

    Love this simple, time saving recipe. I used to do it from scratch every night, but that habit quickly got old . But with this on hand it seems very doable.
    I don’t like the taste of pepper much, but I heard that it helps the turmeric be absorbed. I have tried using pepper corns for less of a pepper taste. Is this enough to do the job?

          You can use fresh ginger in golden milk, but it needs to be strained out of the milk as it will be quite fibrous. But unfortunately, this blend is all dry spices so I wouldn’t recommend adding fresh ginger as it will spoil the batch and be quite clumpy.

    Hi Dana! Thank you so much for this recipe. I am an older person that has the usual aches, pains, and stiffness that arthritis causes. I have had golden milk on a daily basis for the last two weeks and find that it really helps the inflammation in my joints. I kept to the recipe as written except I added a little more cinnamon (it is my favorite spice), about a tablespoon of cinnamon. I mix it with half coconut milk and half almond milk, adding a teaspoon of honey for sweetness. After drinking the golden milk, I find my knees can handle stairs better and I move faster. Thank you again!

    Made this to the recipe and it tastes amazing. So comforting with the right level of spice. I made the paste with coconut oil and maple syrup and keep in the fridge until I fancy a cup

    I made this late last night but accidentally transposed some of the ingredients, and ended up putting twice as much nutmeg and too little turmeric, and it was still delicious. Today I made it properly but I didn’t care for the flavor; I think it is the large dose of turmeric. I get that’s what makes it anti-inflammatory but the taste was not as good as my accidental late-night mixture. So I simply added more of all the other ingredients to the stock for next time. Also I used cashew milk because out of coconut milk; it worked well and has a nice creamy consistency (in fact it was a bit too creamy so I ended up adding some extra water). All in all, with the adjustments I made, I will keep this on hand for my go-to afternoon pick-me-up. Thank you!

    I made this mix. The powdered turmeric is a new taste experience for me so the “earthy” flavor is taking some getting used to, but I think it’s growing on me. I like the other spices in it and I am mostly in it for the health benefits. I’ve had several cups now and I like it more each time-it’s like chai. My one problem is that as I was drinking a cup, my cat jumped up on my lap and knocked into the mug-splashing golden milk all down my sleeve…and on the cat’s ears. The cat is black so other than being disgruntled about the wet ears, she cleaned up pretty well. My shirt, however, is now dark golden yellow and an immediate stain remover scrub and spin in the washing machine didn’t touch the color. Any”recipe” tips for getting THAT stain out? It was my favorite shirt!

    Can one use almond milk? As far as I know, almond milk doesn’t carry with it all the health and environmental problems that are very often associated with coconut milk and palm products.

      Hi Christine, Did you mix the spices with hot water first before adding the milk? They can separate while enjoying, like any powdered tea or mix, so I tend to give mine an occasional stir mine throughout drinking. Hope that helps!

    I always add ground cardamom to mine…I also like soy milk and hot water mixed about half and half (and hot)- still creamy but lighter. Makes a nice bed-time drink.

    I’ve been making and using this for a few months but not in beverages because I prefer my beverages to be coffee, tea, Pellegrino or water. My unconventional approach is to put a teaspoon of the mix in the bottom of my cereal bowl, add a tablespoon of ground flax seed, a tsp. of sweetener (date sugar, date syrup, coconut sugar, maple syrup, etc.) and enough water to get everything sufficiently wet. Then I nuke it for a few seconds, stir it to blend it all together, and then add whatever cereal I’m going to have.
    This could be oatmeal, which I make by adding and stirring in 1/2 cup uncooked oats and 1 cup water to the mix and then nuking again until the oats are cooked, or cold like Heritage Flakes, which I stir into the mix along with enough soy milk to moisten the flakes sufficiently. I then top either of these options with my homemade soy yogurt and whatever fruit I want along with some nuts. This works great for me and may generate ideas of other approaches for some readers. I realize it might also seem gross for some readers but figured I’d toss out the suggestion anyway.

    Love it hot, made in microwave with beverage setting after diluting 1tsp mix to 2tsp water and 1 cup So Delicious unsweetened coconut milk and dash of Maple syrup. Also used an Ikea frother to froth. It. up. Yum! Drink it on the daily

    Yum! I made half of this recipe mix because honestly I wasn’t sure I’d like it, but I did! I added an extra tsp of maple syrup because I am not weaned off of added sugars yet so I still like things sweeter and I took Dana’s advice and used canned light coconut milk. It was delicious! The flavors reminded me of the extra curry sauce left in my bowl after indian food. It was actually very similar of a flavor to the curried butternut squash soup recipe Dana has!. Very good!

    Embarrassed to say this is my first time trying golden milk. Have seen recipes and on menus but not until Dana mentioned drinking it every day, that I knew I must be missing something. Love these spices so I made a double batch of mix. It’s a good thing as I know I’ll too be drinking daily. I made as directed but think I might try preparing in the microwave by making the paste directly in a mug maybe adding a tiny bit of milk to fully “dissolve”, then add remaining milk and heat for about a minute. Can’t wait to try it cold once the weather warms up around here. Thank you Dana for making this so quick to prepare.

    This recipe is perfect!! I will double it next time. I used 1/4 tsp nutmeg and cloves. Then used full fat coconut milk and a splash of soy milk and frothed it with our espresso maker. Can’t wait to offer this to my friends when they visit. I may add a tsp of cardamom to the blend next time.. because I love it.

    Yes! This is delicious! We used So Delicious Organic Coconut Milk out of a carton and a little nutmeg on top- Muah! Perfection! Even my 3 year old liked it.     I just used a teaspoon of this in a half batch of donuts and it turned out amazing! I did cinnamon and sugar to coat the donuts and it complimented really well. I also made the hot golden milk and it was perfect :D

    Great recipe! I’ve used Silk Protein Nut Milk as well as Good Karma Flax Milk with protein and love it! Another way to use this mix is to add to hot water with apple cider vinegar, cayenne, and lemon for an immune boosting tonic!

    P.S. For people maybe thinking “yuck tumeric/ginger in milk?!” I used to think that too! I hated ginger and had just never tried tumeric sadly. But give this a shot or even just try some mixed into a chai tea. I think it will surprise you. It quickly becomes a sweet drink not the spicey, salty-type drink you may be picturing since salty dishes are mostly what we use these spices for in America. Also learning a bit about spices & their use in Ayurvedic culture helped me to learn WHY they’re so good for us & helped me to be more open to trying them. It’s a creamy & delicious sweet drink!

    I was very hopeful when I made this. My little sister has a hen and rooster sanctuary and has inspired me to cruelty free eating and drinking. Now, my son is participating with me. We found some mixes at Natural Grocers that we were so interested in (we bought one). So expensive! Then…I came back to this site. I use the recipes all the time. Sure enough…score! This is amazing. I have already made little pots of this and given it away as gifts. One recipient texted me and described being “obsessed” with this beautiful beverage.     I am looking forward to trying this easier method. I have one question. Have you ever noticed settling of the ingredients at the bottom of your cup? Maybe I am putting to much turmeric. Any thoughts? Trying to perfect it because it’s so tasty. Thanks

    When you spoke of Golden Milk cravings-I could not relate! Now….I rush home for an afternoon fix. At first I used a little maple syrup, but now I mix it with almond milk on ice. Yummy and oh so eazy. I have made two batches so far. It is keeping inflammation at bay! Thanks so much. You are my go to for fail-safe recipes!! I appreciate you!

    As for the spice mix, see comment above! And as for almond milk, I just think that the flavor of almond milk doesn’t work quite as well as milks like coconut and cashew. But give it a try and see what you think!

      I ended up needing coconut milk for a different recipe anyways, so I tried it for this & I think you’re right – it’s creamier for sure with the coconut milk & has more of a milkshake-y ‘decadent’ taste :)

    I am trying to avoid coconut milk because of the fat content. I read that you don’t prefer the flavor of almond milk with it, so any suggestions for a decent substitute? What about light soy milk with a drop of coconut extract? Also, you said you use the dried, ground spices – just the regular grocery store varieties then? Thanks!

    I made this cold with unsweetened vanilla almond milk and it is great. Also used all the extra spices and the whole 2 t. Maple syrup. Only downfall to this for me was that the spices don’t really dissolve. So I drank it out of a shaker cup and it works well to be able to just shake instead of stir every time I take a drink. Is there something I missed?

      Hi Betty! Did you mix the spices with hot water first before adding the milk? They can separate while enjoying, like any powdered tea or mix, so I tend to give mine an occasional stir mine throughout drinking.

        I had the same problem when I made it today, the spices didn’t dissolve properly and were hard to swallow. I liked the taste and wish I could get it to be smooth enough to drink without coughing. I did mix the spices with hot water first??

    I made the iced version today and am not sure if I did something wrong because all of the spices sink to the bottom of the glass even after using a hand held frother to whip up the coconut milk and spices before adding the ice. The taste seemed pretty raw and the texture of the spices in the mixture was off putting. Do you have any suggestions on how to better incorporate everything together? With all of the positive reviews of this recipe I’m hoping I can make it better.

      Did you mix them with hot water first before adding the milk? They can separate, like any powdered tea or mix, so I tend to stir mine throughout drinking. Any bitterness can be offset with a little more sweetness OR by adding less spice mix to the drink.

I had tried making it a few years ago in my Vitamix and the results weren’t what I had hoped for. I added 1 tsp vanilla powder to your recipe and it is so creamy and delicious. I know what a couple of my friends will be getting for Christmas this year.

    The golden milk recipe has been my summer obsession! Favorite is with hazelnut milk (double the measurement b/c I don’t always have coconut milk)! I’ve just been throwing everything into a blender. Been making this so many times, I made a mix just as this came out! Glad this is here so I can stop converting cups and tsp :) Still have to try the smoothie version.

    I make this with equal parts ginger, cinnamon, and turmeric, then a bit of black pepper for absorption. It is then used by adding one teaspoon to my morning oats. Thank you for validating my innovation (ie laziness)!

    Got your e-mail about this a little while ago and once today I was craving some something sweet and different so I decided to give it a try. ( note: I didn’t make the mix as per recipe, I did the golden milk).
    Just because I live in India, it is actually easier to get the spices in natura and grind them at home…I made a ‘chai masala mix’ of cinnamon, clove, and cardamom and ground all together, and sieve the powder ( the cardamon pods don’t grind very well) and voila. The mix as a flavoring agent is ready…. The rest I somewhat followed the recipe, with coconut milk, stevia, black pepper, turmeric and fresh ginger. Pretty awesome i must say. It definetly killed my sweet tooth. Hope you have a chance to try it with some cardamom…it get a delicious and satisfying mouthfeel. xo

      I use turmeric powder in my homemade toothpowder that I add into coconut oil for toothpaste. It does not stain my teeth. My teeth are brighter using my homemade powder.

    I am a bit confused about he difference between turmeric and curcuma. I would love to make this recipe, I have curcuma on hand, but in other recipes (e.g. scrambled tofu) I find curcuma quite bitter. Can I use it here or is it going to be bitter, too?

      Curcumin is a compound found in turmeric. Hope that helps! It can be a little bitter and I probably wouldn’t recommend this mix for scrambles.

    I’d like to drink more golden milk because turmeric is so healing. Kind of a silly question…. turmeric always stains my counter tops yellow if I spill some, do you worry about it discoloring teeth at all? (I assume it doesn’t because so many people like it)

      I’ve never worried about it staining my teeth – hasn’t happened yet and I’ve drank a lot of golden milk. If your counter tops are porous, be careful. I have quarts and it can absorb but always fades as I wipe it.

        Warning… my mother ate some fried rice once that had turmeric in it and it stained her tooth implant (aka denture) bright yellow!! She had to go have it professionally cleaned as she had one bright yellow tooth ;). Not sure the effect on real teeth but beware if you have fake ones!

      Very true! But based on my research turmeric is cooling. To balance the heat from ginger and cinnamon, try the iced version!

    I’ve tried this recipe but find uncooked turmeric bitter. My recipe includes water and coconut oil brought to a boil to form a paste and honey is incorporated during the cooling process. I’m sure honey could be left out. It makes a quart so all I have to do is stir a Tbsp into my warm almond milk, tea or coffee! I love it!!!

      Hmm, turmeric can be a little bitter. But when combined and balanced with the other spices, coconut milk and sweetener, it should actually taste more earthy. Is your turmeric still fresh?

      I just tried this recipe with almond milk and was not a fan either. I’ve had other golden almond milk (at a restaurant so I don’t know how it was prepared) that was delightful, so I’m not sure what the issue is. I’ll try once more with coconut milk on another day….

        Decided to experiment a bit… cocktails! This was a very good idea.

        1tsp of your golden milk mix
        25ml silver tequila
        25ml simple syrup
        25ml non-dairy milk (I used soy as I had it on hand, any will do I guess)
        1tsp aquafaba

        Shake with ice for at least 20 seconds to get some nice foam.
        I went for a coupe glass garnished with some candied ginger and fresh ground black pepper.

      I just made this and it’s almost gone. I made the spice mix as written, then made the iced version. I had only 1/2 c. unsweetened almond milk left (oops!) so I added 1/2 cup full fat coconut milk. It was creamy and delish!!! I can’t wait to try with just almond milk as it was just so thick with that coconut milk. I added a dash of nutmeg to this batch and used 1.5 tsp maple syrup. Dana, you are the best! This recipe rocks!

    I am writing this comment with my cup of golden milk right by my side. This recipe is awesome! I love golden milk and was just thinking yesterday how awesome it would be to have a mix of it ready for the craving, and my favorite recipe blogger comes with this.
    I made the hot version, only didn’t use a saucepan (I’m lazy like that) and instead I diluted the miw with water in my cup, then poured soy milk and put it in the microwave for a minute. Worked like a charm!
