My summer has been pretty grand.
So far we’ve gone to wine country, made frequent trips to the farmers market, finished up the content portion of our print cookbook (due out late 2015!), and have just generally been trying to relax. There’s something beautiful about warm afternoons spent on patios, sipping wine, and just taking it easy.
Let’s do more of that. Take it easy, shall we? Yes, we shall.
One of the things I love most about summer mornings is a good, heart pounding workout followed by a seriously nutrient-packed smoothie. Yum.
I’ve been reaching for green things lately, but was in the mood for a switch-up. This recipe did just the trick.

If you’re into slightly sweet-tart smoothies with a kick from ginger, this is the one for you!
Also, does it get more hippie than making your own carrot juice? I think not! Make your mom proud and do it yourself. If the color and flavor notes of this smoothie aren’t enough, here’s a quick rundown of the health benefits:
Ginger // stomach soother, immune booster, infection fighter, anti-inflammatory badass (source). It’s nicknamed “the herbalist’s best friend” and has been a powerful plant in Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine for a very long time (source)!
Banana // Digestion aid, potassium-packed, lowers blood pressure, healthy carbs, tastes like candy (source)
Pineapple // Vitamin C-packed, anti-inflammatory, digestion aid, antioxidant-packed, energy boosting, nature’s candy (source)
Turmeric // Anti-inflammatory, antioxidant-rich, battles cystic fibrosis, free radical-fighting, lowers cholesterol (source). Plus, it’s been used for medicinal purposes in India for nearly 4,000 years (source)!

Carrot Ginger Turmeric Smoothie
Ingredients
CARROT JUICE
- 2 cups carrots
- 1 1/2 cups filtered water
SMOOTHIE
- 1 large ripe banana (previously peeled, sliced and frozen // more for a sweeter smoothie)
- 1 cup frozen or fresh pineapple
- 1/2 Tbsp fresh ginger (peeled // 1 small knob yields ~1/2 Tbsp)
- 1/4 tsp ground turmeric (or sub cinnamon)
- 1/2 cup carrot juice
- 1 Tbsp lemon juice (1/2 small lemon yields ~1 Tbsp or 15 ml)
- 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
Instructions
- Make carrot juice by adding carrots and filtered water to a high speed blender and blending on high until completely pureed and smooth. Add more water if it has trouble blending / scrape down sides as needed.
- Drape a large, thin dish towel over a mixing bowl and pour over the juice. Then lift up on the corners of the towel and begin twisting and squeezing the juice out until all of the liquid is extracted. Set aside pulp for smoothies, or baked goods (such as carrot muffins).
- Transfer carrot juice to a mason jar – will keep for several days, though best when fresh.
- To the blender add smoothie ingredients and blend on high until creamy and smooth. Add more carrot juice or almond milk if it has trouble blending. Scrape down sides as needed.
- Taste and adjust flavors as needed, adding more banana or pineapple for sweetness, lemon for acidity, ginger for bite, and turmeric for warmth.
- Divide between two glasses (as original recipe is written // adjust if altering batch size) and serve. Best when fresh.

WOW THIS IS SO GOOD!! I just used water no almond milk but I am so impressed. I used to go to a local juicery and get their “glow” drink for $12 each (so expensive😭) and I was like why don’t I try to make my own, and it is so similar! I am so so so happy with this and how good it is. This was such a good smoothie! I can’t eat bananas, so I subbed frozen mango to get that creamy texture. Prior to blending, I also added some collage powder and a scoop of hemp seeds to add some protein and fat. Delicious, and I love its anti-inflammatory properties!

Delicious! I had leftover carrot juice and wanted to find something to do with it. I also added some leftover frozen mango with the pineapple. I used vanilla almond cashew milk. My husband and I are recovering from covid so the healing properties of the ginger and turmeric grabbed my attention. I’ll definitely make this again.

This is REALLY good. I love how the pineapple and banana lend a hint of tropical flavor. I used a small knob of fresh turmeric and didn’t strain out the carrot pulp. Everything else I kept the same. Even my 7 year old loved it. Yum and thank you for the recipe!

Sooo good!! I was surprised how well all the different flavours go together. Definitely gonna make this more often. Tip: add a bit of black pepper (you won’t really taste it) to absorb all the nutrients from the turmeric.

I made this with a few adjustments. I left the pulp as is and substituted 1/2 of the almond milk with coconut water. Absolutely freakin’ delicious! I currently drink a 16 oz green smoothie twice daily. Since my stomach can’t handle too much acidity, I will probably sub 16 oz of this every few days. Thank you!!

Very frustrating recipe. I recommend reading ahead before making this recipe to adjust to your preferences. I did not like the fact that I ended up making 2 whole cups of carrot juice from following the recipe, when the recipe only calls for 1/2 cup. I did not want extra juice, so feel like that should’ve been an optional instruction. The recipe should’ve called for 1/4 cup carrots and however much water to make 1/2 c juice. Then as I continued to follow the recipe, I added a whole cup of almond milk as instructed. I should’ve known better. It was extremely watery/runny and not the way the consistency of a smoothie should be. So I advise starting out putting in 1/4 c almond milk (or less) and adding more if/as needed.

Hi Kristen, sorry to hear this recipe gave you trouble. The tricky part with making a smaller amount of carrot juice is that it doesn’t go over the blades of the blender so it doesn’t blend properly. Did you use frozen banana and frozen pineapple? That should help it be more thick.

I really love this smoothie!!! I don’t bother juicing the carrots, I just add 1.5 cups shredded plus 1.5 cups of water and left everything else the same- SO GOOD. Will add even more ginger next time because I love that zing soooooo much.

I strongly recommend cooking the carrots for 7 minutes in a little bit of water (which you also add to the smoothie as some nutrients leak into the water while cooking) and some fat as your body won’t be able to absorb all nutrients otherwise. The extra cooking and cooling down time is well worth it :-)

Great recipe! Creamy and refreshing with a light zing. I didn’t strain the carrot juice, however it was still deliciously smooth. Used cow’s milk as didn’t have any cashew milk, but looking forward to trying it again using a healthier milk alternative! I really like recipes that don’t include too much fruit and have a reasonable portion of veg. Tip for the gals: I also added chia seeds as I personally find they really help with PCOS and cysts!

Delicious! I made a couple necessary modifications based on what I had onhand (a peeled, frozen lemon half in place of juice; only 5 chunks of packaged, frozen pineapple; whole milk in place of almond milk; I only had about half the amount of ginger called for; and the banana I used was very ripe and frozen). I also opted to make the carrot juice with the proportions recommended but without straining it (more fiber; less prep). Despite these changes, the result is creamy, bright, sweet and has some appealing earthiness from the carrot. I will certainly make it again.

I love this smoothie!!!!!. Started making them daily about 2 weeks ago for my husband primarily for Anti inflammation needs. I’ve also put mangos when I ran out of pineapple. Not sure if he’s felt any difference just yet ( would love to hear about results people are seeing ), but plan to incorporate this into our diets regularly ! Taste great! Im not a big fan of the taste of carrot juice. I halfed the recipe and substituted coconut milk instead of almond. I also added 1 tbsp of chia seeds and a splash of oj. It tastes wonderful, i couldnt taste the carrots at all (yay!)

We loved this smoothie. Due to time constraints we used store-bought carrot juice – we added an extra frozen banana and one clove of frozen garlic. We substituted for milk for the almond milk. Regarding the EO question: I would not recommend consuming essential oils.
I am aware that many of the pyramid brands suggest consumption, but these are volatile compounds and you must use them with caution. (Even topically, they can be extremely harmful if not used with care).There have not been studies done on the consumption of these products. If they contain heavy metals, plant essences can be very dangerous as the organs have no way of breaking them down (bioaccumulative). That said, if you are extracting your own and are fully aware of the location source and safety, there are certain essential oils that can be beneficial in moderation. I’d personally stick to fresh local ingredients or high quality extracts/ tinctures:)

Dana, this is a delicious smoothie. I just made it and I missed the step where you suggest straining the carrot juice. In the smoothie, the pulp gives it a bit more thickness that I like without being chewy. I also added a dash of black pepper to help my body absorb the turmeric. Thank you for sharing the recipe!

This was absolutely delicious! It has become my favorite way to incorporate turmeric into my diet. I made the carrot juice first but didn’t bother straining and then just added everything else to the Vitamix. I also added a pinch of black pepper to increase the absorbability of the curcumin in the turmeric. Thanks for the great recipe!

This smoothie was so tasty and pleasant to drink for breakfast. I used store bought organic carrot juice instead of making my own, and used strawberries instead of pineapple since I didn’t have any at home! I will definitely be making this again :)

Dana, this is amazing! I’ve just had this for dessert, having just done a 30-minute Pilates session (that was my first in well over a year due to various injuries and recovering very slowly from major shoulder surgery…), and this sat very well with me indeed. I was first introduced to carrot and turmeric juice when out in the Malaysian jungle 3 years ago, doing a study on endangered spiders, and fell in love, but, even as a smoothie fan, never thought to put these orange wonders into a smoothie. What a wonderful idea! I sadly can’t have citrus or pineapple, but it still tasted wonderful without: I added cinnamon as well as the turmeric. I think that this will become a staple with me. :)
P.S. Love your sense of humour! “Anti-inflammatory badass” describes this wonder juice exactly!

030219 – i made this smoothie, and it was great. i substituted the almond milk with canned (thick and creamy) coconut milk. frozen pineapples took a bit to churn and not too sweet. all and all a good recipe. i substituted the cinnamon w/turmeric water from previously boiled turmeric.

Ahhh this is so great. I know that ginger and turmeric have immune fighting powers, so it’s so great to know they are in here. I threw in some leafy greens cause that’s how I roll lol they were mild and didn’t change the flavor, otherwise everything is exactly the same and this tasted great, thank you!

This sounds delicious and I can’t wait to try it. I have some fresh turmeric that I will use in place of the powder. This morning I did spinach, avocado, cucumber, fresh ginger, fresh turmeric root, blueberries, almond milk and a blob of Greek yogurt. Yum.

thanks for this interesting recipe. I was looking for something with Turmeric since I have read that it helps with vitiligo. I might give this a shot. Carrot also has positive impact on our skin. Back in the day my friend was experimenting with carrot a bit too much and she got this orange skin-tone :)

OMG this is delicious! Creamy and decadent with some spicy warmth, it almost tastes like a dessert to me. Yum! I used unsweetened vanilla oat milk instead of almond milk, and threw in some hemp hearts, ground flax seeds and a bit of black pepper and it was amazing. Thanks for another great recipe Dana!

This has a very interesting and mildly addicting flavor. In other words, I love it! The sweet pineapple balances out the turmeric flavor quite nicely. My kids even like it, which is shocking. I used a pinky of fresh tumeric root in place of the ground turmeric. Will definitely be making this part of my smoothie rotation. Thank you!

Another winner!! I used mango instead of pineapple (that’s all I had on hand) and used my Vitamix to make the carrot juice before adding the other ingredients so I didn’t have to dirty up a ton of equipment. So so so good!!!

Hi, I am on a reduced potassium diet. I think I am going to try this smoothie out but substitute the pulp of the carrot for the banana and add honey to sweeten. Would that work?
