Glass jar of Chocolate Peanut Butter Pudding with a bite removed

I don’t what took me so long to share my take on avocado pudding, but it was long overdue! This stuff is amazing. If you’ve never tried it, now is your chance.

Fresh avocados for making vegan Chocolate Avocado Pudding

I rarely eat chocolate without peanut butter. The two just go hand in hand. So it was a no brainer to add a healthy spoonful into this creamy, rich, nutritionally-dense pudding.

Food processor with ingredients for making vegan Chocolate Avocado Pudding

Nutritionally dense, you say? Yes!

  • Avocados are rich in healthy fats, folate, carotenoids and are extremely heart healthy.
  • Bananas provide Vitamin B6, potassium, fiber and natural sweetness.
  • Chocolate provides antioxidants and magnesium.
  • And peanut butter adds protein and even more healthy fats.

That’s one healthy bowl of pudding, yo.

Food processor with freshly made Chocolate PB Avocado Pudding

The great thing about this pudding – besides its immensely rich texture and chocolate flavor – is that it’s naturally sweetened with dates. Of course, you can substitute whatever other natural sweetener you prefer – maple syrup and agave being ideal.

It’s also customizable. If you prefer an intense chocolate flavor, add less sweetener. And if you’re like me, you like your pudding on the sweeter side and will prefer adding more. It’s extremely forgiving and flexible in this way.

And did I mention rich?

In my opinion, the coconut whipped cream and additional peanut butter on top are essential. It adds another level of decadence and wave of flavor that just brings it all together. Please follow my example.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 ripe avocados
  • 1 large ripe banana
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa or cacao powder
  • 1/2 cup salted creamy or crunchy peanut butter (plus more for topping)
  • ~1/2 cup sweetener of choice i.e. maple syrup, agave, date paste or honey if not vegan (amount will vary with preferred sweetness)
  • ~1/4 cup almond milk or other non-dairy milk (slightly more if using dates)
  • Coconut Whipped Cream (for topping // optional // but recommended)

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients except coconut whip into a food processor and blend until creamy and smooth. Add more dairy-free milk to thin/help blend. Add more cocoa powder for a richer chocolate flavor. Add more sweetener of choice to enhance sweetness.
  • Divide between 6 small serving glasses (as original recipe is written), cover with plastic wrap (pressing the plastic wrap down on the pudding to prevent a skin from forming) and chill for a few hours, or overnight.
  • Before serving, top with coconut whipped cream and drizzle of salted peanut butter.
  • Leftovers will keep in the fridge up to a few days, though best when fresh.

Wow, this looks maazing, cant wait to make it. This recipe description mentions “sweetness of banana and dates” but I dont see any dates in the ingredients….?

    Thanks,
    Mattea

  2. Tina says

I have made other avocado chocolate puddings before and they were so thick and rich, that any more than a couple tablespoons made me nauseous.

I read your recipe and the light went off. From the ingredients, I could immediately tell it was going to be phenomenal in taste and texture.

I made it last night in my Vitamix, as I could see a little chunky bits in your photos, and I wanted it completely smooth.

“Wow!!!” in no way covers the reaction of myself and my husband. We sat side-by-side on the couch, in between mouthful repeating, “Wow!!! This is sooo good!” and “Wow!!! This is the best pudding ever!”

My husband was wanting to know when I was going to make it again, when we hadn’t even finished what we were eating *and* had leftovers for today.

Needless to say, this avocado pudding recipe is a huge hit in my home — well, except for the pups, they’re extremely unhappy that we won’t share with them.

  3. JoJoDan73 says

Previous attempts at different choc avocado puddings haven’t tasted great to me, but this looked so good I had to try. I had no bananas, so tried the following:
1 large ripe avocado, 3 tablespoons cocoa, date paste, 2 scoops vanilla protein powder. It was thick, rich, absolutely gorgeous!

  4. Priya says

Really looking forward to making this! We don’t have any almond milk in – would dairy milk still work?

  5. Suzanne says

Love this recipe and I’m about to make it for the third time!
I added a spoon of coconut oil last time which made it even more velvety.
Fabulous recipe – have shared it with friends – thank you.

  6. Chandra says

oops – I used the pudding as a fruit DIP.. not a did. I wish I saw your advice to the comments above mine in just using no bananas.. I’ll try it again to see how just avocado works in this pudding. I’ve never made avocado chocolate pudding before. At least the texture and consistency was lovely, too!

  7. Chandra says

Firstly, thanks for the idea. Secondly, I really dislike when people write a negative review of a recipe when they altered the recipe.. so I’m not going to rate this recipe because I didn’t make this recipe exactly as written.

I thought I had an avocado left at home so I only bought 1 more at the store (total of 1 large avocado). I bought a bunch of bananas to get with this recipe and I always have cocoa powder and peanut butter :)

I had dried dates so I added a handful into the food processor bowl after I buzzed the bananas and avocado. (I used 2 perhaps extra large bananas and 1 large avocado – you replied to someone else they could double the banana and half the avocado amount when they were leery about the avocado in the recipe). I added about 1/4 cup honey that I heated so it poured out well and emptied the jar. Then, I took a BIG scoop of peanut butter. And then I added some more (probably about 3/4 cup total – but eye balled) and buzzed. I added 1/2 a cup of cocoa power and buzzed. I forgot about the almond milk and just put in skim milk. I tasted and it was.. meh. I couldn’t even taste the chocolate or peanut butter. It was almost all banana. So I added almost another 1/2 cup of dark cocoa powder. The mixture was warm (partly from the warm honey – partly from buzzing for several minutes) and I thought maybe that was throwing the flavor off.

I just tried the pudding for lunch. I was underwhelmed because it still mostly tastes like bananas. I gave my son a taste (and he has a pretty mature palate) and he didn’t even want to close his mouth because he couldn’t tell what he was eating – even though I told him it was chocolate pudding. He also said it tastes a like banana.

Saving grace: I bought a case of nectarines yesterday as well. The I used the pudding as a fruit did and it was yummy! :)

Do you have any ideas how to make this more palatable for us? Would it work with no bananas? Thanks!

You deserve an award for most creative and delicious recipes , especially with the limited amount of ingredients used. We are all so busy these days and your recipes add so much fun and enjoyment to my life and that of my sons. I thank you for all that you and your special partner in life do. You are appreciated beyond words! Yet another winner! SO rich and tasty! MMM MMMM GOOD!

  8. misty says

Has anyone tried it without the banana? It’s great, but I think I would like it better without the initial taste of banana.

    • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerDana @ Minimalist Baker says

Misty, it’s fine without banana but I find it helps add more natural sweetness. Feel free to omit it though!

  9. Mary Beth says

Sooooo good! Dana, you are amazing. :)

I just wanted to comment that I made this in my standard Hamilton Beach blender and it turned out super smooth as you would want a pudding to be. The secret, I guess, is mashing up the avocado and banana by hand (with a masher or fork) and then mixing in the rest of the ingredients before putting it in the blender. I also used date paste (blended 1/2 cup dates with 1/2 hot water) and probably about 1/4 cup of extra milk to help blend everything once it was already in the blender. With some patience, everything blended perfectly!

    • Chandra says

is date paste really just dates buzzed with water? I didn’t know so I added whole dried dates and buzzed them. I thought it was a “product” that I didn’t have :)

  10. Sara Groom says

I made this with Gluten Free peanut butter cookies for my birthday dessert…NO ONE even missed a traditional “cake.” We used one large avocado and 1 1/2 small frozen bannanas slightly thawed…the pudding was ready to eat right after we mixed it. We will definilty make this recipe again.

  11. bobbie says

I have all the ingredients except dates and I love dates. when I look at your link for date paste it included salt is that how I make it for this recipe?

    • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerDana @ Minimalist Baker says

That is optional! I do prefer my date paste with a bit of salt to offset/complement the sweetness. But feel free to leave it out!

  12. Janelle says

I love this recipe! I doubled on the bananas to make it sweeter to satisfy my sweet tooth. Absolutely amazing!

  13. Jan says

    2 questions:
    1. Given that both bananas and avocados turn dark very quickly, I wonder how long this pudding will keep in the refrigerator. Does it change color? If so, how quickly should it be eaten?
    2. Has anyone tried to replace the peanut butter with sun butter? Our school has a no nuts policy and this would offer a good solution to that problem.

    • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerDana @ Minimalist Baker says

I think sun butter would work well. It keeps in the fridge for up to a few days!

  14. kushi says

WOW!!This is such an amazing combo!!Loved all the ingredients in this recipe!!!Mouth watering!! Beautifully written :)

  15. Kg says

Please, can we find a recipe like this with NO coco or chocolate, I hate the stuff! Will it work with Vanilla essence maybe?

  16. Sheila Alexander says

How can this be called healthy? It’s almost 400 calories – that’s a meal! 29 grams of fat – good fats or not, that’s a lot more than anyone should get in a day.

    • Kim Lund says

I just read someone claiming this is not healthy and I think they have to read again.
I have been creative with avocados for years and I just never measured, this makes it easier to get it right. Avocados are a great source of nutrients. There’s also the coconut cream. Fat has in the past had a bad reputation but if it’s a healthy fat it’s essential to heart health. The ingredients are amazing in this, personally I soak my dates in either coconut water or milk and than blend smooth. That way it’s still a whole raw fruit which adds more nutrients, I try to add coconut oil whenever I can.

YES, there’s a lot of calories bc most likely I would eat more than a serving.

This didn’t claim to be low calorie or the trendy “low fat” theme that has left us all starving as it saitiates our hunger. Low fat almost always is also high simple carbs or even worse chemicals, has to have something.

Fat is not the enemy. I am not saying that this should be your only food in a day but it upsets me that the author put a lot more time than most can imagine to be able to measure the amount of each ingredient. I have made very close many times but never wrote down anything.

The author said nutrient dense and it is, personally I am not vegan so would sometimes add raw milk, pastured raw egg yolks to add protein, and always a couple spoons of coconut oil to increase the fat. That slows the absorption of the natural sugar in raw dates, along with the fiber.

This is a great recipe for a healthy TREAT it’s up to individuals to decide how much they plan to eat.

The fact that it’s scalable by portion is why I can’t believe someone criticized.

  17. Roxanne says

My fiancé just made a batch of this for us. It nearly killed out Vitamix because it was so thick and really just tasted like a weird banana avocado mix. I can’t get the taste out of my mouth right now, but wish I could. This is the second avocado chocolate dessert recipe I’ve tried this week and maybe those flavors don’t work for me? Dunno. Thanks anyway for the recipe! I love 99.9% of your other stuff that I’ve tried.

    • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerDana @ Minimalist Baker says

Roxanne, avo pudding definitely has a distinct flavor but I liked it. My recommendation would be to add more banana and less avocado less time. And more sweetener always helps! Sorry it didn’t turn out how you hoped!

  18. Marubi says

My problem with this recipe is the part when you say “divide into 6”. Ha! More like two, max 3. So delicious, it is cruel to not give each person a well-sized portion! :)

  19. Erin says

This one was not for me. It was like a roller coaster of good and bad in my mouth. I didn’t have any whipped topping though, which I regret greatly. It looks like the best pudding in existence, but alas it is not. The avocado taste is really strong, and I only put one in.

  20. Kelly @ The Gouda Life says

I was rummaging endlessly around the cupboards for something sweet today. No sugar in the house and hardly enough butter to bake anything significant. And so I found this. Spectacularly easy, rich and delicious. I added a wee bit of espresso powder and cinnamon in place of the PB and am so happy. Pregnancy without adequate chocolate = meltdown so thank you, thank you.

  21. abby says

I couldn’t help but to comment on this recipe. This pudding is seriously delicious! I’m vegan and my fiance is paleo. Needless to say, it is difficult to find recipes we can both enjoy. We were both blown away by the flavor and texture of this pudding. I made a few minor changes (used sun-butter, a Florida avocado, and stevia to sweeten). I am definitely going to be making this again.

  22. Kristi Rimkus says

I was hunting through recipes for a friend whose husband is battling pancreatic cancer and needs nutrient dense dishes he can eat. This looks fantastic. So glad I found it. Thanks!

  23. Amy says

    I absolutely love this recipe!!
Instead of coconut whipped cream, I topped it with diced raspberries and pistachios…the tart fruit and salty nuts make it amazingly decadent :)

  24. andrea says

I just found your recipe. I want to try it, but i have a problem with the banana. can it be replaced by something else?
    thanks

  25. Marni says

Can I use regular 1% milk? My kids need the calcium from milk in their diet. Does it work differently than almond/non-dairy milk?

  26. katie says

Genius. I just made this with unripe bananas, (couldn’t wait for them to ripen) just a sprinkle of cocoa powder and a drizzle of maple syrup, mashed it up with a fork. It was delicious!! I can’t wait to make it properly.

  27. Lisa says

Made this for both my mom-in-law and my work as a treat- was incredible simple and delicious!!! No one even knew the main ingredient was avocados until I mentioned it. Rich and scrumptious.

  28. Charles B says

Not that I expect this to last long, it is absolutely delicious, but any idea what the shelf life is for this? If it is covered in the fridge?

  29. Hailey says

I’ve got this chilling in the fridge to bring as my dessert to a carnivorous Thanksgiving. Except me, of course. I could hardly stop licking the spoon and blender when cleaning up, yum! Hope everyone else likes it! I’ll wait and tell people the ingredients after I get unanimous approval. ;) MUCH tastier than the vegan pumpkin pie I made for Tgiving back in the day before internet recipes. Even I thought that tasted like cardboard. Can’t wait to dig in and see how everyone likes it! I’ll take pics for you for Instagram! :)

  30. Clairettelachouette says

Hi, I tried this recipe, and it was my first time with avocado choco pudding. The avocado tastes a bit weird in it, maybe I should add more cocoa…
But it was a nice experience though. And the coconut cream is great!

  31. Julia says

I am the biggest avocado fan and this pudding is just to die for! I have already made this twice and will be making it again in future. Big smile after eating this one :D

  32. Randi says

I just made this and it was delicious. Didn’t even wait for it to be chilled in the fridge. I used a large Florida avocado which I think has a milder flavor than the haas avocado. I will definitely make this again.

  33. AlieOops says

When i made this i was expecting a rich chocolaty pudding, based on the photos and description. Its not *quite* that, but pretty good. The avocado and banana flavours were really strong in this, most than i was expecting. That isn’t to say its without merit. I added a scoop of this on top of vanilla ice cream, and it tasted JUST like a banana split. Really. I also added a scope on my cinnamon oatmeal this morning, to add in some healthy fats and some fruit. So good! I don’t really see this as a stand alone pudding, but works so good a a side kick. I could definitely see this as a fruit dip!

    • Alexis M Ehlers says

Add more coacoa powder. I had a strong banana taste and added a little more and a little more sweetener and bam! Perfection. So good!!

    • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerDana @ Minimalist Baker says

I’d leave it out and replace it with more sweetener, though recognize that the flavor of the avocado will be more apparent in that case.

  34. Janine says

I didn’t love this. I love all the ingredients separately but it just didn’t work for me. It had kind of a bitter taste from the chocolate but it was sweet enough. I found it edible but not delicious. My daughter who is quite picky really didn’t like it.

  35. chaya says

i just made this and i added more honey than stated after tasting and while it is good and deliciously thick as a pudding should be, i still taste the bitterness of the avocados. they are setting in the fridge now. i hope the whipped coconut cream will cut the bitterness. i dont think my avocados were over ripe. they looked just fine when i opened them

  36. Lisa says

I absolutely love this pudding. I didn’t have peanut butter so I used almond butter. So delicious! Thank you for your recipes. You’re blog is wonderful!

  41. Lori Bowman says

This is totally bowl licking good, have made it twice now!! Thanks for such a yum reciepe.
Am wondering if you could use carob powder instead of cocoa powder to make it healthier or would it be an odd taste?

    • Julie says

I use pure raw cocoa-powder, and its the healthiest thing ever. Loads of antioxidants.
I use raw cocoa as a nutrient also. So if you get the real raw organic one I believe its the best, healthiest and tastiest alternative. :-) ;-)

  45. Ellen Lederman says

Gorgeous photos! But as reliable as your recipes are, I may have to poss on this one. I attended a raw food dinner where the host made chocolate avocado pudding…just basically avocado and cocoa powder. I love chocolate/coca. I love avocado. But do I love them combined? Not so much. I could taste the avocado in it. Possibly I couldn’t in your recipe since I think you use more cocoa and have a banana in it as well and also the peanut butter.

Speaking of peanut butter, just interested in your take on powdered peanut butter that is being sold. Met someone who always uses it. You just add some water to reconstitute it. It eliminates 90% of the fat. I’m thinking I don’t really want to use it. Some fat is essential. And made powdered with the fat eliminated, it seems processed. Not really a whole food.

  46. Allison says

Avocado pudding is one of those amazing things that you present to people and they’re BLOWN away. Chocolate and peanut butter together would be killer. Such a simple, healthy, and satisfying dessert. I love pudding!

Question! I am thinking about making this and mixing it in with my overnight oats… Is that weird? I’m thinking it could be a good breakfast, but do you think that’s too decadent??

    • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerDana @ Minimalist Baker says

Hmm, not sure! It definitely wouldn’t be too decadent, but I’m wondering if the oats would get too gummy with this or not. If you try it, let me know how it goes!

    • Liz says

@Jess Do it! I made this pudding and used it to top oatmeal twice this week–it was delicious! I had my oats hot, but I’m sure it would be just as delightful with overnight oats. I actually think the pudding is better mixed with oatmeal than on its own.

I started making avo-chocolate pudding when my oldest was a toddler, but only in the last year or so did I start adding peanut butter to the mix. It makes it so much better!! Good call using pb here. :)

I have long been a fan of chocolate-avocado pudding desserts. However, I have never tried to add peanut butter to it – woe is me! Now, my eyes have been opened to a whole new world of flavour possibility. What’s next – flaky sea salt toppings? Caramel folded in? A melted white chocolate mix-in? So many options! Thanks for this.

I just made this recipe and Wow!!! I’m absolutely shocked at how good it is. I’m new to eating avocado’s so this is a terrific easy recipe. I did add 1 tsp of vanilla extract and I used organic peanut butter powder in place of regular peanut butter. I will be making this many times I’m sure.???

I have seen avocado pudding recipes a million times, but this one looks so much creamer and rich than those. Not to mention, peanut butter makes everything better!

It tasted ok, just that the only thing I tasted was banana. I didn’t use a super rope banana as that was recommended but the flavour was still overpowering. Any tips? Did anyone else have this issue?

Hi Maddi, hmm, we’re not sure what would cause that other than the banana being too ripe. Did it have any brown spots? If so, maybe try a yellow one next time?
