Two mugs of the best vegan Matcha Latte made from coconut and macadamia nut milks

Matcha lattes, you guys. Vegan matcha lattes. Naturally sweetened vegan matcha lattes. Things are getting very hipster over here today and I’m very into it.

Let’s matcha!

Bamboo whisk, matcha, maple syrup, and nut milks for making the best Matcha Latte

What is Matcha?

Matcha is a powdered green tea containing 137 times more antioxidants than brewed green tea (like, whoa). Both come from the tea plant (camellia sinensis), but with matcha, the entire leaf is consumed.

It has traditionally been consumed as part of Japanese tea ceremonies for centuries, but has become more widely known and popular in recent years and is now enjoyed around the world in tea lattes, smoothies, desserts, snacks, and more! Learn more about the fascinating history of matcha here.

How is Matcha Prepared?

Matcha is traditionally prepared by sifting a small amount of matcha into a small bowl along with a small amount of water and using a matcha whisk to mix into a smooth paste. Once smooth, add your hot (but not boiling) water (to help preserve the nutrients and avoid bitterness). Whisking in an “m” motion can help achieve a nice foam texture. Learn more about traditional preparation here, and a video demonstration here.

So when did matcha lattes come along? Our research proved fruitless, but we’re guessing it was also an invention of the Japanese that became ultra popular globally in the last decade.

Using a small wooden spoon to grab a scoop of matcha powder for making the Best Matcha Latte

I’ve been on and off the caffeine train many times over the last decade. Some days, it’s my superpower. Other days, it makes me feel like an insane person.

So when I’m needing a little pick-me-up these days, I’ve been opting for a gentler source of caffeine that also boasts a flurry of antioxidants: matcha green tea powder!

This 4-ingredient, 5-minute recipe is easy to make, customizable, and super delicious. The first and most important thing is to start with quality matcha.

Townshend’s is local to Portland and I love supporting local brands doing cool things, so I went with Townshend’s this time (which happens to be bright green and so delicious!).

However, if you’re new to matcha and wanting a more accessible, but still high-quality brand, check out our Matcha Review!

Pouring sweetener into a mug with matcha powder for making the best vegan matcha latte

For sweetener, I went with maple syrup, but another natural alternative would be stevia, which dissolves easily and adds a subtle amount of sweetness to your latte.

The next important ingredient is dairy-free milk. I tested almond, coconut, and macadamia nut milk, and two stood out as clear winners.

Almond milk doesn’t jive with the flavor of matcha in my opinion, but coconut and macadamia, on the other hand, totally do.

I found my favorite combo to be half coconut milk, half macadamia milk (brand recommendations below // see my Guide to Making Dairy-Free Milks here!). This duo creates a creamy, delicious latte that lets the matcha shine through.

Using a bamboo whisk to stir together matcha, sweetener, and a bit of nut milk

I hope you guys enjoy this latte! It’s:

Creamy
Smooth
Bright green
Naturally sweetened
Antioxidant-rich
& So delicious

This would make the perfect gentle caffeine boost when you need a little pick-me-up. I enjoy mine warm in the morning with breakfast. But it can also be made cold over ice if you’re in warmer climates or it’s summertime.

Ingredients

LATTE

  • 1 1/4 tsp matcha powder (see our Matcha Review!)
  • 1 Tbsp maple syrup (or stevia to taste // more or less to preference + depending on sweetness of macadamia and coconut milk)
  • 1 Tbsp hot water
  • 3/4 cup light coconut milk (DIY coconut milk) (I prefer canned Whole Foods 365 organic)
  • 3/4 cup macadamia nut milk (DIY macadamia milk) (I like this brand)

ADD-INS optional

Instructions

  • Add matcha powder to your serving mug along with sweetener of choice and hot water. (If adding add-ins like maca, ashwaganda, or coconut butter, add at this time.)
  • Whisk with a bamboo whisk or a metal whisk until completely dissolved. If you don’t have a bamboo whisk, you can use a spoon or a metal whisk or even blend the latte in a blender. Bamboo whisks are gentle on the matcha and also help it dissolve more completely. So if you like matcha, I recommend investing! Otherwise, use what you have.
  • Once the matcha is completely dissolved, heat* your coconut and macadamia milk (or other dairy-free milks). I added mine to a frothing pitcher and steamed on our espresso machine, but you could also heat in the microwave or on the stovetop until hot and steamy. To get more froth, you can whisk vigorously or use a handheld frother.
  • Pour dairy-free milk into your mug – latte art optional (mine was a little sad – lol). Taste and add more sweetener if needed. I found that, when I used the macadamia nut milk, I only needed a bit of maple syrup or stevia to sweeten. Enjoy immediately.

  1. Jess Himango says

First time making a Matcha Latte & it was delicious! I made mine iced –+
    I didn’t have maple syrup or honey…so I substituted with 1 T. Agave nectar!
I used 1 1/2 c. Unsweetened coconut milk from a carton, as I did not have any other nut milk options available to me at home- Heated up, and frothed with a metal whisk for a few minutes until foamy.
    Would definitely make again! Thanks!

  2. Yuri says

You did it again! What a treat!! I made mine iced with coconut milk and vanilla almond milk since I currently have over a gallon of different plant based milks but no macadamia milk. I didn’t add the sweetener since the almond milk had sugar already. Took less than 2min! So delicious! My tea shop before we moved has this amazing lavender vanilla matcha latte…do you have any recommendations to add the lavender flavor? I got my matcha at a local tea shop that even let me bring my own container! Morning coffee, move over!

    • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerSupport @ Minimalist Baker says

Yay! Thanks so much for the lovely review, Yuri! The lavender vanilla matcha sounds lovely. We wonder if you could grind lavender flowers in a spice grinder and add with the matcha? Otherwise, maybe try steeping lavender in the dairy-free milk first? Let us know if you try it!

  3. Leigh Ann McGuigan says

Best vegan matcha recipe! We used oat milk and it turned out delicious! I used 1 tbsp of maple syrup for my latte and 1tsp for my husbands (he doesn’t prefer his beverages to be sweet). We were both thrilled!

  4. Becca says

    Hi Dana

My first ever matcha latte, thank you for sharing your recipe, I used whole cows milk as I’m not lactose intolerant and it was lovely. Without your recipes I wouldn’t have even come accross matcha (other than in the form of teabags which I really dont like) this was lovely though. I had a thought…have you ever tried adding the matcha powder to oatmeal? Would love to see a recipe like this on your site 😃 I might give it ago myself but I’m no expert in the kitchen with experimenting haha. I was just thinking I eat oatmeal every morning whatever the weather so rather than adding extra calories in form of a matcha latte why not add the matcha to my breakfast? 😋

Thanks again Dana, love your site and your vibes, never stop please 🙏 😊

    • Sharon says

We really enjoyed this. Used unsweetened plain So Delicious coconut milk and 1tsp Lankanto monk fruit sugar which made a ever so slightly sweet and very creamy warm drink. Sprinkled pumpkin pie spice on top. I used a hand stick blender.
Made for my 13 year old daughter and substituted maple syrup as the sweetener and that made a much sweeter drink which she loved.

  5. Sydney M. says

Made with oat milk and brown sugar as the sweetener – would highly recommend! Very quick, easy, and delicious.

  6. Astrid says

This looks amazing! My husband likes getting iced Matcha green tea lattes from starbucks, but we know Starbucks doesn’t have the best ingredients so we decided to order our own matcha powder and make these at home. Can’t wait for it to arrive!
Question…If I’m making it iced, do i still do the Tbsp of hot water for the Matcha?
    Thanks!

    • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerSupport @ Minimalist Baker says

Hi Astrid, great idea! Yes, still mix it with a little hot water to help it dissolve. Let us know how it goes!

  7. Ebar says

This recipe is BOMB! Made a few modifications (used oat milk and honey since I didn’t have maple syrup or Stevia) and this latte still came out creamy and delicious. Thank you Dana!

  8. Alyssa says

Loved it! I’ve always liked getting them at coffee places, so I wanted to try my own. I make my own oat milk and it’s all I had on hand, it super smooth and tasty! ???

  9. Maria says

I tried this in my blender. It was good, but I have to say that I missed the consistency of when I use whole almonds instead of almond milk or coconut milk. What I do (and maybe is not considered matcha) is I soak a quarter cup of almonds overnight, then next morning I boil about 2 cups of water with 4 dry figs (I cut off the ends of the figs first). Then when they boil I pull out the figs, pour the soaked and rinsed almonds in the blender, the 2 cups of hot water where the figs boiled next, and the figs, and finally a heaping teaspoon of matcha powder. I blend on high speed for about 3 minutes, pour on a big mug, and sprinkle with cinnamon powder. It comes out foamy, creamy, and delicious. I do not strain the blend, so the whole almonds are there, but it gives my drink a creamy consistency that I love.

  10. Caitlan says

This was so yummy and cozy and easy to make! I love that you don’t have to mix this latte in a blender. It took basically the same effort as a simple cup of tea, but was so creamy. Thank you! :-)

  11. Nerissa says

Love matcha. This is so good. I added a little vanilla protein, used soy instead of coconut and fiber for extra filling feeling. Perfect pick me up/snack. I also put mine in a blender before i put it over ice to ensure it wasnt clumpy. So yumm

  12. Lynnette says

Perfect directions! And I have done some experiments, finding my favorite combo to be oat milk and monkfruit as a sweetener. Thank you for this recipe!!

  13. Kali says

So good!! I used less matcha (1/2 tsp) and the coconut cashew milk recipe from here with so delicious coconut milk from the carton and maple syrup.

  14. Daisy says

When dissolving the matcha I used 1 tbsp matcha, 3 tbsp hot water and 1 tbsp maple syrup. I substituted the macadamia nut milk for almond milk (just because it’s what I had) and used the canned organic coconut milk from Sprouts. I used the microwave to steam the combined almond milk and coconut milk and it didnt froth up as much as I expected but that didnt really bother me since I was serving it over ice anyways. After “steaming” the milk I poured it over ice in a tall glass, added the disolved matcha and stirred to keep the matcha from sinking to the bottom. Doubling the amount of matcha worked out just fine because in the past when I used almond milk to make a matcha latte, the almond milk was surprisingly overpowering for being of original flavor and unsweetened. So if using almond milk I would suggest using extra matcha to compensate for the boldness of the almond milk. The coconut milk worked great to smooth out the flavor as well. I know I changed a few things but this recipe is a good reference for understanding the proportions for dissolving the matcha and helped me get closer to the ideal flavor :)

    I’m obsessed!
    The macadamia milk is amazing!!!
With the matcha is even better. I literally look forward to my matcha in the morning and in the afternoon. I wish I could drink this all day.
    What’s your favorite matcha brand?
I know you’re doing a review in the near future, but what’s your fave so far?

Yay! Thanks for sharing, Lorraine! We’re sharing our favorite very soon! If we had to recommend one for now it would be Encha organic for a daily matcha.

  20. Hailey says

Love this recipe! I used Califia toasted coconut milk, added cinnamon and blended this up in my blendtec since I do not have a frother or a matcha whisk!

  21. Kiran says

Never thought I would enjoy matcha…but omg….so yummy!! And super soothing. I made this with oat milk. Highly recommend.

  22. Jennifer says

Thanks for the recipie! Does your matcha separate from your liquids? Mine always separates and sinks to the bottom.

  23. Lauren says

I’m yet to make this (it sounds and looks amazing) but my question is, you posted the link to this on your Instagram story and mentioned collagen powder! Which do you use? And is it vegan/vegetarian friendly?! Thanks in advance :)

For vegan collagen we like the Moon Juice mushroom collagen. And our go-to non-vegan option is Vital Proteins or Sports Research!

Hi! This is the best recipe that I’ve found (and I’ve tried a lot). I’ve tried different kinds of milk, but my favorite so far is cashew milk. Thanks for a great recipe!!!

  25. Nancy Banerjee says

I made a matcha paste just like you did and used my frother to warm almond milk and blended it all …poured into a glass filled with ice and enjoyed! Thank you for the wonderful recipe!

  26. Jass says

Very light and smooth; just enough matcha and sweetness that you can enjoy the flavour and not have it be overpowering. I used almond milk, honey, and heated the milk over the stove. I find that almond milk doesn’t take kindly to the microwave.

  27. Sonia Mohabir says

Love this matcha latte with the maca powder! It prompted me to make macadamia nut milk for the first time and coconut milk from scratch. So worth it. This is a real crowd pleaser with non-vegans.
    Thank you!!

  28. Bailey says

Yum!!! I used oat milk & made it into an iced latte and it was DELICIOUS! I drank it in about 10 seconds flat :)

    • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerDana @ Minimalist Baker says

Yes, a loose paste at first. Add a bit more water until it tips to once side of the mug easily. Then add your steamed / hot milk.

Fabulous and fool proof recipe! Made with half almond, half coconut. Lactose-intolerant but not a vegan, so I added a touch of honey. Can’t wait to try other alt milks. Dare I say I can kick a popular star coffee shop’s latte to the curb in the mornings now (hint, hint…)? Thank you!

Yum delicious! I didn’t have coconut milk – and used my new favorite Oately Oat milk – it was superb!! Thank you!

  30. hav says

So tasty. I used light coconut milk and soy milk, with monk fruit sweetener. It is soooooo good. Green tea has a nice flavor with the coconut milk. Thanks for a great recipe.

  31. Nicole says

I’m late to the matcha game and I almost thought I made a bad choice buying it after making a latte that tasted terrible. Found this recipe and gave it a try and boy am I ever glad I did! I used only coconut milk because that’s all I had and I also added the Maca as well. Didn’t have coconut butter so used cacao butter instead and I absolutely love it! It’s so silky smooth and creamy and yummy and I will be making this again, for sure!! Thanks for sharing this…your recipes never let me down!! This for sure will be a new favourite to enjoy :)

  32. Ayshia says

This was a great recipe! I used slightly more macadamia but milk than the coconut as I think coconut sometimes tends to be overpowering. Will try to order the Townsends matcha as the Whole Foods out my way only has two choices and they are insanely expensive! Thanks!

  33. Humaira says

Hi so just to make sure I understand IF I use just soy milk and no other milk for the latte and that would be ok right, thankyou!!

  34. Veron says

This recipe is delicious!!! I used Matcha Organic Powder by “Kiss me Organics”. I used local honey since I didn’t have any Maple Syrup on hand.

  35. Tara says

This was my first time making matcha green tea latte after trying one for over $5 at Starbucks. This recipe was so much better!! I ordered my matcha from Amazon and received it yesterday. Woke up this morning and googled a recipe and yours popped up! Bookmarked for sure.

I need to buy a bamboo whisk because mine was useless but I made it work. Plus I need a frother.
    Anyway.
So I used a can of coconut milk and added soy milk. I didn’t have macadamia milk, though I’m sure it’s a tasty alternative. The soy worked great. Used the left over to make my kiddo a hot chocolate.
Just want to say that I loved your recipe and suggestions. Thank you !!

  36. JB says

This is absolutely incredible and I love it best when it’s iced! Quick question: do you have any recommendations for ashwaganda or maca root powders? There’s just so many on the market, online, etc., all claiming to be organic and rigorously tested – how do you know which brand(s) are best?

  37. Hope Burmeister says

I love mine with no sugar at all lol. I absolutely love matcha powder! I’ve been buying Matcha Lattes at a cafe lately so it’s awesome to be able to make my own at home. Thanks for the recipe :)

We love coconut milk best for this drink, but almond/soy/cashew milk will all work!

  38. Brian says

Loved this recipe! I’d recommend trying it with hemp milk for an earthy wholesome latte!

Note to the Author – You might want to specify the water temperature in your first step. Some people will assume recently boiled water 95c+ (200f+) which turns the matcha very bitter. As another commenter mentioned, 80c (175f) is pretty much the sweet spot for matcha.

  39. Erin Lindwall says

I just made this recipe with coconut milk, coconut oil and maca powder along with my http://www.matchayutea.com culinary Matcha and it worked a treat! Thanks for sharing an awesome recipe! I want to learn latte art now too !

  40. Kim says

I am really late on the matcha trend.. this is my first time using matcha at home.
I just made this but used So Good unsweetened almond coconut milk (I am in Australia so not sure if you have this overseas) and half the sweetener. I don’t have a traditional matcha whisk however so I used a handheld battery operated milk frother and it turned out nice and creamy.
Thanks for the great recipe and it was super yummy!

  41. Kristen says

This is so good! I used half cashew milk and half almond milk and really enjoyed it! Thanks for the recipe and product recommendations!

Super delish recipe! Thank you! I had unsweetened almond milk and Trader Joe’s light coconut milk on hand. Yum! Look forward to having it again tomorrow morning.

  43. Rachel says

I’ve been using this recipe for months, it’s wonderful! I too am a caffeine addict who drinks way too much coffee and this has been a great, less jittery alternative! I personally use almond milk in mine, and it’s still very good, but I love almond milk so I’m biased. Thank you for this wonderful recipe!

  44. Whitney B says

Hey Dana – this looks super tasty and I’m thinking of trying to make a matcha concentrate (enough for like 3 days) so it’d be easy to take and shake at work for an iced version. Maybe mix the matcha, sweetener, and hot water in advance and then later add cold milk/ice and shake? I feel like this would work … have you tried this at all? Thanks!! :) :)

  45. Jana McIntyre says

Loved this matcha latte recipe! Thanks so much (though I did cheat and use half regular milk and half almond milk since that’s all I had). Much better than an old recipe I was using, and I will try coconut milk. And I feel good, not hyper and about to crash like I do after a cappuccino

  46. Monique Meadows says

I could not figure out how to make a matcha latte without clumps (may sounds silly) and this recipe led me to a smooth and delicious latte! Thank you! :)

  47. Rachel Powers says

I just made this! I agree that I don’t usually enjoy almond milk with matcha, but I used what I had on hand and it turned out very coconutty and creamy and I’m in love! I used 1 1/2 cup almond milk and 1/4 coconut cream from TJ’s. Its delicious – thanks for the recipe

  48. Prici says

Love, love, love! I have the bamboo whisk and do recommend it- HOWEVER, the trick to a good blend is warming up your cup with piping hot water first. Just pour a bit of your piping hot water in your cup of choice until warm (a few seconds) and pour out. Then, add your matcha and just enough hot water to whisk matcha until all lumps are dissolved. Lastly, add remaining hot water and hot milk (I used coconut milk) – sweeten to taste and enjoy sip by sip – aahhh!! Yummy!!!

  49. Sierra says

Delicious! I’m rationing my coconut milk until I can get to TJ’s again so I used Califia original unsweetened almond milk. Yummy + easy, I used a smaller whisk to blend the powder and to froth the warm milk. I’ll be making this a lot this winter ?

  50. Keanu says

Beautiful recipe. I did half and half coconut and rice milk and it turned out so nice. Would love to try coconut and macadamia milk because it sounds delicious.

  51. Melissa says

I guess I need to find some macadamia nut milk! I tried it with coconut milk and disliked it! I normally make mine with ripple pea protein milk because it’s favorless to me and I can truly enjoy the matcha. I think I can try to be more adventurous

  52. Growing gardens says

I just made this using oat milk that I made in my blendtec. Although I strained the milk with cheesecloth, it was still quite thick and made the consistency a little too thick for my liking. I recently had a matcha latte with packaged oat milk and it was excellent so I think I need to do a better job straining my oat milk.

  53. Theresa says

I immediately became addicted to this and for a while I made this every day. Unfortunately I have a hard time finding lite coconut milk in Germany, so I used full fat which was a bit much.

  54. Karen says

There are 3 macadamia milk options on your Amazon link and it’s pricey so I want to get what you liked. I’m wondering if you used Latte de Barista, Original or Unsweetened? Thanks

  55. Kayte says

I’m wondering if others have tried it with almond milk and had problems with the milk separating as the latte sits for a minute? Sort of like when you put almond or coconut milk into iced coffee and it looks as though it has curdled. It tasted fine but the appearance isn’t so nice.

  56. Tiffany Chau says

Silly me read the ingredients wrong. I made it with coconut milk instead of macadamia milk. Still good! Thanks for the recipe!!

  57. Cris says

I’ll have to check out the macadamia milk, but I agree that coconut milk is perfect with matcha! I used half coconut, half almond milk because that’s what I had on hand. The French press is another way to froth milk for lattes at home. It works great and is easy to clean. Also going to check out the bamboo whisk. I can never quite get all to blend with my metal whisk. Thanks!

  58. Michelle says

Absolutely cannot wait to try this. I’ve never had a matcha latte before. Love that beautiful bright green color!

  59. Goreti Tada says

I just made this and it tasted a little bit bitter but it is my first time drinking a Matcha Latte. I used the Organic Matcha brand you recommended as well as the MILKADAMIA. I used the THAI ORGANIC full fat coconut milk. I think next time I’ll try and use different types of non dairy milks.
    Thank you this recipe.

I completely enjoy your recipes and I thank you for them wholeheartedly. I have to mention though…I’ve tried the brand of macadamia nut milk you suggest and it’s just okay. That’s lovely to hear, Christy! Yes, try Townshend’s. Theirs is amazing!

We don’t have any plans for in person workshops as of yet, but will certainly let you know if that changes in the future! So glad you’re enjoying the course in the meantime.

I have the same struggle with caffeine! Some days it makes feel great and other days like a crazy person! I do love matcha so I’m excited to try these out!
