Bowl of creamy oats topped with brown sugar, walnuts, and banana

With an Instant Pot and 20 minutes, you can make PERFECT, creamy oats every time! Let us show you how.

Bowl of rolled oats and glass of dairy-free milk

Instant Pot Oats

Cooking rolled oats in the Instant Pot is quick, easy, and yields perfectly creamy oats!

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Ratio = 1 part rolled oats : 2 – 2 ½ parts liquid (water and/or dairy-free milk)
  • Cook Time = 2 minutes
  • Release = 10 minute natural release, then release any remaining pressure

Oats make a delicious porridge, especially topped with fresh or frozen fruit, nuts and/or seeds, nut butter, brown sugar or maple syrup, cacao nibs, cinnamon, or your favorite toppings!

This recipe uses rolled oats, but steel cut oats also work in the Instant Pot. You can find instructions here.

Benefits of Instant Pot Oats

20 minutes may not sound like a major reduction in cook time compared to stovetop, and you’re right! That’s because the instant pot takes ~8 minutes to pressurize, 2 minutes to cook, and a 10 minute natural release is recommended.

The real benefits?

  • Hands-Free – the Instant Pot allows for set it and forget it. No stirring, no worries about burning oats. Perfect for busy mornings!
  • Meal Prep – It’s perfect for batch cooking. Make a large batch of oats and store little jars in the fridge to enjoy throughout the week.
  • Big Batch – The Instant Pot has a large capacity, so you can cook oats for a crowd and then keep them on “warm” until serving (no burning, no drying out). Perfect for hosting and feeding a house full of guests!

TOPPINGS optional

  • Fresh or frozen fruit
  • Nuts/seeds
  • Nut butter
  • Sweetener (such as coconut sugar or maple syrup)
  • Cinnamon
  • Cacao nibs

Instructions

  • Add rolled oats and water and/or dairy-free milk to the Instant Pot and stir to prevent sticking (use the lesser amount of liquid for more textured oats and the greater amount for more porridgy). Pressure cook on high for 2 minutes (it will take about 8 minutes for the Instant Pot to pressurize before cooking begins).
  • Once the timer goes off, allow to naturally release for 10 minutes, then release any remaining pressure. Carefully remove lid once steam has fully escaped.
  • Enjoy immediately with toppings of choice. Store cooled leftovers in the refrigerator up to 5 days or in the freezer up to 1 month. Reheat on the stovetop, stirring frequently and adding more liquid, if needed, to thin.

Yes, exactly! The only thing that will change in terms of timing is the amount of time it takes for the Instant Pot to come to pressure and release pressure, but that doesn’t require any adjusting on your part. The Instant Pot will just do its thing :)

  1. Trish Feehan says

A game changer! I put this oatmeal on and it cooked while I took my shower. Came down to a delicious and nutritious breakfast. So easy! (I used 2 1/4 cups of water—perfect.) Thank you!!!

  2. Becky says

I love porridgy oatmeal, and this is the perfect recipe. I mash up 1/2 banana in a bowl and add the oatmeal. So good! I love that I can walk away and not watch it on the stove or microwave. I’ve made it for 4 and stashed in the refrigerator for the next three days for me. Today, I made a batch for 8 to serve company.

    • Becky says

Aack! I posted above before the batch for 8servings was actually done. It was a big mess – The release had it spitting all over and dripping across the floor as I headed for the sink. When the pressure dropped enough to get the lid off safely, I saw that it was boiling over the top. Big mess to clean up.

Still – the most excellent oatmeal!!! Amended just to warn – my 6 quart is safe for 4 servings at a time, no more!

      • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerSupport @ Minimalist Baker says

Oh no! Sorry that happened, Becky. For foods that expand (like grains and beans), it’s recommended to not fill past the 1/2 line. For bigger batches, the natural release will also take longer.

  3. Toni says

This recipe was easy and came out well. After reading the comments I made a double batch using 2c one degree sprouted rolled oats, 1c milk, & 2c water in a 6qt instapot. Followed recommended time 2min/10min. The oatmeal was chewy, thick and creamy. Next time I’ll follow the recipe and use 4c liquid to compare consistency. This will be our go to method. Thanks for sharing!

    • Toni says

I just wanted to pop back and say I made this today with 3c water and 1c milk. It was even better than my first try. I let it sit for few minutes and it was perfect – not too thick & not too thin. Definitely the best way to make oatmeal. Many thanks😁

  4. Virginia says

Thank you for this recipe guide, the first time I made this recipe I doubled it, using 2 cups of oats and 4 cups of water and put my instapot on high pressure for 2 minutes. However, before it reached full pressure the burn warning came on and I had to add an extra cup of water. I decided to cook it on low pressure to finish it and it still came out nice and creamy. I am now trying it again on high pressure to see if it suceeds with 2 cups of oats and 5 cups of water from the start!

  5. Luciellenc says

I’ve tried this recipe different ways and got BURN notices every time. Most surprising were attempts at using just plain water (in 8qt IP Rio, and in 8qt IP Pro). I make large batches (4x) but don’t reach 1/2 mark. I have to scrape out the partially cooked oats and finish cooking on the stovetop. I’m really frustrated. Any advice?

    • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerSupport @ Minimalist Baker says

We’re so sorry you’ve had a negative experience with it. We haven’t tested with larger batches or an 8 quart Instant Pot and think one of those factors could be the difference. We’d suggest trying a smaller batch and/or adding more water. Hope that helps!

  6. Jessica says

Absolutely creamy! LOVED the toothsome texture of the rolled oats. I’m clueless in the kitchen and new to the Instant Pot, but I found the timing estimates pretty much dead accurate (8 minutes warmup + 2 minutes pressure cook + 10+ minutes release). I did find the oats too soupy with the suggested ratio of liquid to oats, using 1/2 non-dairy milk + 1/2 water. I think if you let it sit long enough, it solidifies fine. However, I found the flavor a bit lacking: “thin” and, well, watery.

Because I wanted it thicker, I tried again with 1:1 ratio of oats to liquid. Over half the liquid was the coconut milk/almond milk blend, and the rest was water. Other readers’ suggestions to use a pinch of salt is a must! It rounds out the flavor nicely. I added 1 tsp cinnamon and 3+ tsp vanilla because there’s no such thing as too much vanilla for me. I still couldn’t even tell it was in there, but I think it’s because the store brand extract I used was weak. Spiraled in some maple syrup.

Even with those additions, I found it to be a very mild flavor–fine as a base with no overpowering notes of anything. Next time I might add in almond butter or something to make it taste more substantial.

Had to refrigerate overnight, and of course it was nice and thick when it came out. I reheated on the stove and found I did not need to add more liquid–but again, I prefer it on the thicker/stickier side.

Then the fun part: Loaded my cup with a little creamy PB, sprinkling of semisweet choc chips, apple/banana/strawberry slices, and a bit of crushed graham cracker. I look forward to trying this again as a healthy, easy base for other healthy and not-so-healthy toppings, lol.

  7. Jessica says

Hi! If I want to add some vanilla extract, would I add it in with the oats before starting the instant pot? And how much would you recommend? Thank you!

  8. Gwen Frita says

I made this with sprouted rolled oats and almond milk. 2 mins pressure cook, 10 minutes release as recipe says; it came out perfect. I used maple syrup and brown sugar for sweetener & blended whole macadamia nuts for the nut butter and added fresh sliced strawberries after cooking. (Almonds instead of macadamias would have been better.)

  9. Jan says

Hiya love your blog! Just getting my first instant pot so this chart is perfect! Wondering with cooking beans the timing indicated for instance 30 mins includes the heating up time? Do I just put 30 mins as the total time?

Also when cooking beans in my normal pressure cooker there’s always a lot of foam. Does it also foam a lot when cooking beans in an instant pot? Thanks!

    • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerSupport @ Minimalist Baker says

We’re so glad you enjoy the blog, Jan! The cooking time does not include the time for it to come to pressure. You’ll set to high pressure with a time of 30 minutes and then once the Instant Pot has pressurized, it will have a timer that counts down from 30 minutes. Hmm, we have had it produce some foam, but we wouldn’t say there’s a lot!

  10. Bonnie Perkins says

I bought sprouted oats from Costco to try. I tried cooking them in microwave like I used to do with rolled oats. They were terrible. Needed a lot more cooking. I just found your recipe using sprouted oats in instant pot. I want to try it and have been reading the comments. Sprouted oats, rolled oats, and even quick oats are being used. Do I need to increase/decrease time to pressure depending on which type oats I use?

    • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerSupport @ Minimalist Baker says

Hi Bonnie, we’ve only ever made this recipe with rolled oats, but typically quick oats and sprouted oats will cook faster.

      • Bonnie Perkins says

I made your oatmeal using sprouted rolled oats. I used 1 cup oats, 1 1/2 cups almond milk, 1 cup water, 1 tablespoon butter, and pinch of salt. Pressured 2 minutes on high with 20 minute natural release. I opened the lid to take a look. It looked terrible! Way too much water and the oats looked like they needed lots more cooking. I decided to let them sit there until they cooled. Then I would throw them out and try again with more time. I was going to eat these the next day anyway. After about an hour sitting on my counter they were beginning to looking a lot better. The oats were soaking up the liquid. I put oats in container in fridge. This morning I heated them up in microwave with a little half and half. Oh my gosh! No oatmeal I have ever made was so delicious and creamy. So glad I didn’t give up to soon and throw it away. Getting ready to make a larger batch for the rest of the week. Thank you so much for a wonderful recipe.

        • Lara says

You made Overnight Oats. You can find recipes for these all over the net, and I believe you can skip the heating step. Happy Oating!

  11. Erica says

Wow, this recipe re-ignited my love of oats!

Our mornings with a pre-schooler have been more harried these days and microwaving oats just hasn’t been doing it for us. I love rolled oats and didnt want to switch to instant for ease, I’m so grateful for this recipe, thank you!

Like a few other commenters, I like them to sit a while to absorb more of the liquid. I do 1c water 1c almond milk and theres a bit of liquid left when I open. I stir it up and put the lid back on while I empty the dishwasher.. The oats are SO plump and yet toothsome and it’s like a whole new rolled oat experience! Definitely need to plan time-wise if you want them fresh, but I find making a large batch and then microwaving portions every morning with a bit more milk works fantastically. I love that this is mostly hands-off vs constant stirring that I was doing before to achieve creaminess.

I can’t wait to try these as savory oats–thanks for the fool-proof recipe!

Once a month our family joins a group of young men and we feed the homeless in a large city on the East Coast. It can be cold and wintery this time of year. We always provide a bagged sandwich lunch w/ chips and a piece of fresh fruit. There is also 2 6 qt instant pots of beef stew, plus hot and cold beverages. We wanted to provide an extra hot meal selection and decided to serve oatmeaI knowing it might be a hit or miss, either you love it or you hate it. We decided to make it and gauge how well it was received for a future a hot meal option. This recipe did not disappoint and was a huge hit, people came back to thank us saying they just don’t get hot cereal offered to them, that it was delicious and asked that we could bring more next time! We used 2 instant pots (6qt and 5qt) filled to max lines with oats, water and a pinch of salt (served the oatmeal with 1 oz containers of brown sugar and cranrasins plus individual creamers). I took the advice of others and sprayed each pot with PAM prior to cooking. I did get the burn notice on the 6qt pot, but it didn’t affect the oatmeal consistency. Clean up was a breeze for both pots. Thank you for this recipe and giving me a great reason to dust off my instant pots.

Love your recipes. This was fantastic!!
I used 2 c rolled oats, 2.5 c water, 1 c unsweetened almond milk, 1/2 tsp salt and 1 tsp cinnamon. I cooked on low pressure for 3 minutes, ( was worried about the burn notice).. natural pressure relief for 10 min. Wow…creamy and delicious. Won’t ever make it any other way. Thank you for such a great, easy recipe.

  14. MerryChristmas Claus says

After making it your way several times including the one I posted recently. I now use your recipe as my starter. It works perfectly every time in my instant pot. I use 6 1/2 cups of water and 4c of whole milk. I added a half a cup of raisins, 2.tbsp of butter and a teaspoon or so of cinnamon. The butter prevents the oatmeal from sticking to the instant pot and preventing the burn notice.

I use 2 minutes for cooking time and 20 minutes natural release time. My instant pot is one that has been recalled due to burn notice issues. So I find work arounds with every recipe to prevent that.

  15. MerryChristmas Claus says

Loved this. Made 6c water and 2.5 c milk. Added Bocha Sweet Brown with cinnamon and chunky peanut butter. Kept in fridge and ate with berries one day, an egg the next. Every day was different and delicious.

  16. Emma says

Great recipe! First I tried a batch of oats and milk, that was decent, next I tried a batch of oats and almond milk, and that hit the jackpot! Our family favorites include brown sugar and cinnamon with bananas and sliced almonds on top.

  17. Kay Sommer says

Great recipe. Works every time. I use One Degree brand sprouted rolled oats because they’re certified glyphosate free and gluten free. I use 1/2 purified water & 1/2 unsweetened organic vanilla almond milk for the liquid. When it’s done, I stir in some organic Ceylon cinnamon powder, organic vanilla and sometimes organic almond extract. The whole family loves it. 😋

  18. Jen says

Grateful for this recipe!! Came out SO good! I did 1 cup water & 1 cup coconut milk with a pinch of salt. No more stove top oats!!!🙌🏼

  19. Yana Wasi says

Thank you for the recipe. I doubled it and made with milk mixed with water but my IP duo 8q spit a lot of milk out when I pressed to release steam. I feel I should of kept it on warm for some time instead of turning off and counting 10 mins🤷🏻‍♀️ Any ideas how to avoid milky spit?

    • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerSupport @ Minimalist Baker says

Hi Yana, with doubling the recipe, it may take longer for the pressure to release. We’d recommend waiting 15-20 minutes next time, or until the valve drops. Otherwise, carefully placing a dish towel over the steam valve (keeping fingers away from the steam) can help prevent a mess!

  20. Mike S. says

I made this exactly as instructed putting only the oats and water in the Instant Pot. The total cook time was slightly less that stove top and gave better results. It was nice and creamy. Perfect as far as I am concerned. Thank you for posting this.

  21. Natalie says

I have been using this recipe for a week now and my husband is very grateful that I found it!! It is nice and creamy and very easy to make. I often make a pot in the morning and eat my share and put the rest in the fridge for my husband and children later on. My husband prefers it after it has sat for a while opposed to freshly made. I usually use 2 cups oats, 3 cups water and 1 1/2 oat milk. I cook it on the low heat setting. I have not had a burn warning as a few others have mentioned. Thanks for a great recipe!!

I don’t have a stove at the moment & have tried soooo many recipes in the instant pot to make porridge & they’re ALL slimy & gross. This recipe is absolute perfect every time. I add a 1/4 tspn of cinnamon & half a mashed banana, my 11m & 2yr old practically lick the bowl.

  23. Jo says

I love this recipe! It’s quick and easy. For the liquid, I use 2/3 almond milk to 1/3 water. After it’s done cooking, I stir in some mashed bananas, drizzle it with honey, and sprinkle a bit of cinnamon on top.

My whole family loves this recipe!

  24. Mary Noonan says

When you’re waiting for the natural release time to pass, do you turn the Instant Pot off at the wall or keep it on Warm mode?

  25. Gina says

Hello! I like making my oats with milk, is it okay to do 2 cups water and 2.5 cups milk (for the larger batch cooking)?

  26. Terri Kemp says

Such an easy way! I love making several servings at a time and put it in the fridge for quick, warm breakfast ♥️

  27. Carolyn Lepiscopo says

This was so easy and yielded the fluffiest, creamiest oatmeal. I will never make stove-top old fashioned oatmeal again! :) We like to use canned coconut milk and water as our liquid. Used 2.5 cups of liquid and it was definitely porridgy, which we prefer. Thank you for the great recipe!

I am out of all milks right now, but was thinking I might try adding richness to this recipe by adding a few dollops of milk to the water mixture before adding everything to the Instant Pot. Will that work as well?

    Thank you,

  30. Anya Gous says

I made this recipe using Gluten-free rolled oats and 2 and a half cups liquid (1 cup almond milk and 1.5 cups water). It came out perfect ito consistency. Just needs salt which you can add to taste. Thank you for this recipe, will definitely use again.

    • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerSupport @ Minimalist Baker says

Hi Rick, we haven’t tested that, but another reader mentioned adding chopped apples with success. Let us know how it goes!

  31. Joanne Robertson says

We made this in a 3QT Instant pot and had oatmeal coming out of the vent after a 10 minute natural release. Second time we increased the natural release to 20 minutes and it was absolutely perfect. We added diced apples and cinnamon and topped with some chopped walnuts 😋

  32. Susan says

After running out of steel-cut oats, I’ve made this several times and it always turns out great. I like it with two cups water and 1/2 cup soy milk.

  33. Laura says

I did the 1 cup of oats to 2 cups of whole milk but I got a burn warning (I saw in the comments that someone had doubled the recipe just fine so I was hoping that by doing the regular recipe but going down to the 3 quart sized instant pot I would be ok but that may have been the reason I got the burn warning?). Even with the burn warning, it seemed to turn out ok. I really liked the texture as it was bumpy but still creamy— just like the picture! Next time I might try using Pam spray prior to cooking because it was a newer pot and it’s really caked on horribly now… not going to be fun to clean. 😅

    • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerSupport @ Minimalist Baker says

Hi Laura, thanks for sharing your experience! We’d suggest trying 1 cup water and 1 cup milk next time. When using all milk, it can be too thick and cause a burn warning.

      • Janet L Stewart says

I used 1 cup of oats, 1 cup of almond milk and 1 cup of water and also got the burn warning. I’m wondering if a lower heat setting would work better.

  34. Abi P says

I usually make your steel cut oats recipe but had ran out, and discovered some jumbo porridge oats in the cupboard so decided to use this recipe instead. I made two portions and followed your recipe using just oats and water. My dad always tells me to put a pinch of salt into porridge so that was my only addition – he says it’s the traditional Scottish way but I don’t know if that’s accurate or not! It turned out lovely. I loosened it a little after cooking with some more boiled water as I like my porridge quite thin. And topped with Greek yogurt, fresh berries, tahini, sunflower and sesame seeds, with a quick instant pot seasonal fruit compote. It was delicious and very filling. I love all of the instant pot recipes you’ve created and shared! Thank you 🥰

What is up with all the dairy-free options? Is it because people are cutting dairy from their diet or because dairy cannot be used in the recipe? Just want to clarify.

    • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerSupport @ Minimalist Baker says

Hi Michelle, we used dairy-free milk in this recipe because many of our readers are intolerant to dairy or choose not to use it. However you could definitely use dairy milk in this recipe! Hope this helps!

I made this with one cup of rolled oats and 2.25 cups water. I coated the Instant Pot with a few sprays of oil and also added a few shakes of salt. It turned out fine and didn’t burn and the oil kept the bottom from sticking. It’s creamy … just like the picture. Looking forward to doubling the recipe.

Just wanted to thank you for this amazing recipe! I made it this morning using Quaker Old Fashioned Oats, 1 cup of unsweetened coconut milk, and 1.5 cups of water. I did the pot-in-pot method, used the same cook times, and it came out just awesome!

    Hi
I measured the remaining clear water that I placed in the pot earlier remains at 1 cup. Why no change?

    • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerSupport @ Minimalist Baker says

Hi Gloria, Not sure I’m understanding your question, but maybe you’re saying not much water evaporated? It’s likely because the Instant Pot seals in moisture.

  40. Sharon says

I had overnight guests last weekend so needed a simple recipe that could feed a bigger crowd. I followed this recipe and the oatmeal was creamy and delicious! I doubled your recipe and used water. It was so easy. For cleanup, I filled the empty pot with water to loosen any remaining bits of
oatmeal while I did the rest dishes. It cleaned easily. Thank you for this recipe!!

  41. John says

My first instant pot mini meal. It came out really tasty. In fact, we have porridge every morning, have done for years, and this was the nicest yet. BUT! It made a very badly burnt mess on the bottom of the pot. So I’m going to look into pot in pot in future. For pot in pot, do you think I’m going to need to adjust the cooking times? Or perhaps NR for longer?

    • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerSupport @ Minimalist Baker says

Hi John, we haven’t tried pot in pot, but some other readers have talked about it in the comments and mentioned using the same timing. Hope that helps!

  42. Amy says

I made this and it turned out really well. I used an immersion blender and turned a batch into baby food as well. My question is, can you prepare this overnight for breakfast using the delay start? Thanks!

    • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerSupport @ Minimalist Baker says

Amazing! Love that, Amy! Hmm, we haven’t tested that, but it might be okay? We’re not sure about food safety on leaving the oats in there overnight.

  43. Krinio says

I really really wanted to love this, as I’m fighting a stomach infection and a promise of a quick, easy, creamy oatmeal was everything I needed. I have made and LOVED many of your recipes so your name is kinda like a guarantee for me.

Well, it was a disaster and I ended up unscrewing the bottom of my IP to get it clean!
I doubled the recipe but kept the ratio! I used only water.
I switched the valve to secure.
When it had preheated and before starting countdown it informed me my food was burned, so I cancelled the program
Upon releasing the steam all hell broke loose, gooey liquid everywhere (it had also filled up the condensation collector, I saw that today when I did the deep cleaning, it was a solidified pudding!)

I honestly don’t know what went wrong. One advice I’ve read before (and I don’t know whether that’s true) is to not stir starchy food so it doesn’t stick to the bottom, *unless specified in the recipe* – which it is here.

    Pretty sad with this :/

    • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerSupport @ Minimalist Baker says

Hi Krinio, we’re so sorry that was your experience! We haven’t tested this recipe as a double batch and doubling it is likely the issue. That would cause it to spill over into the condensation collector. Also, if you did a manual release instead of natural release, we could see that causing gooey liquid to go everywhere. We hope you have a better experience next time and hope you’re feeling better soon!

      • Sayaka says

Burn notice here too! Instant pot 6qt with non stick insert pot. 1 cup water and 1 cup oat milk. I stirred the rolled oats but still got the burn notice near the very end of preheat. I very carefully did a manual release to resolve the burn notice and when I stirred the bottom they had definitely got stuck. Still tasted creamy and good though!
I wonder if it’s the oat milk?

        • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerSupport @ Minimalist Baker says

That could be the issue since it’s thicker. You could try thinning out the oat milk with more water. Hope that helps for next time!

  44. Lewis says

At about the 2 minute mark, the pot began spouting steam out of the release valve (it closes automatically so I know it was not open)
I did a manual release and it spouted more liquid all over the counter

    Do you know what happened?

  45. Heather says

I always thought I was not an oatmeal person. But recently I decided to try to get onboard since I am FREEZING! (also for the many health benefits). I am an instant pot fiend, so was so happy to find this recipe. It worked like a charm. I made it in advance for a breakfast to heat up at work. I used water and added a small amount of soy milk after reheating. But the oats were really so creamy that the extra milk wasn’t really necessary, although it was nice. I added maple syrup, frozen blueberries, and cinnamon after the instant pot and before reheating.

  46. Christian says

The recipe worked fine for me. I paid attention to the comments and used half water and stirred thoroughly before sealing up the pot. I used low temp. I added a handful of currents before cooking along with a pat of butter and a tiny pinch of salt.

I did one BIG change from the directions. I used a pot in the pot for the oats. This eliminates the danger of burning. Otherwise the same timing.

A cup. Maybe a heaping cup. The stainless steel bowl, uncovered, I used for the oatmeal was on a rack above the water.

As written the recipe is just fine, and I used the measurements and the timing. Cleanup of the big pot can be avoided by using a pot in pot.

We love it! I made it with 4 cups of unsweetened almond milk, one cup of Premier Protein vanilla drink, 2 cups of Quaker old fashioned oats, 2 tablespoons vanilla, 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon and 3/4 teaspoons kosher salt. Delicious!

Oh no! We’re so sorry that’s been your experience, Kiera! Is it possible you’re using milk in place of the water? That’s caused issues with burning for other readers.

Thank you for posting this – it prompted me to get my never-used Instant Pot out of the pantry in order to try this! Two weekends ago I tried a slow-cooker recipe overnight and it wasn’t good. Last weekend I made oatmeal on the stove-top, stirring, stirring, stirring! It was good, but annoying to make and the oats weren’t creamy enough. Google led me here and this morning I tried this simple recipe; delicious, creamy, and easy! I used half skim milk and half water…no burning whatsoever. This is my new go-to for making oatmeal for my family…thank you!

We’re so glad this recipe was a success for you, Judy! Yay for hands-off oats! Thank you for sharing your experience! xo

Thanks so much. Im trying this recipe per my usual setting and your recommendation — manual / high pressure. When do you use other settings, in this case, ‘porridge’?

    • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerSupport @ Minimalist Baker says

Hi Allison, we almost always use the manual settings vs. the presets! But our understanding is that it can be used for rice pudding or longer cooking grains.

    • BG says

I used the 4 person portion and followed the instruction but the oatmeal burned and caused the instant pot to stop with Burnt message. How to prevent that?

  50. RP says

I’m so glad I stumbled on this. I love oatmeal, but hate standing around stirring and keeping an eye on it. It’s makes the easiest, creamiest oatmeal. I sometimes do the next day oats cold with greek yogurt and fresh berries. Thanks for the tips.

Is there a reason to use only non-dairy milk? I typically do not have a non-dairy in the house and thought I would do it with standard dairy milk.

  52. Gem says

Sad times, I’ve tried doing porridge in jam jars before and they turned out okay. Trying this way with half almond milk and half water for the liquids and straight in the bottom of the IP and mixed thoroughly, ended up with the burn message and sure enough the oats were stuck to the pot. Anyone know what could have gone wrong? Did 1 Cup oats to 2 & 1/2 liquids. Quite new to this & thought it was nifty if you could get away with not doing pot in pot.

    • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerDana @ Minimalist Baker says

Hmm, did you give it a stir before cooking? Not sure why you’d be getting a burn message with that ratio of dry to wet ingredients.

      • Donna says

This happened to me too. I used 3 cups of oats and 7 cups of rice milk. I got a food burn message even before the pressure cooking began. I might try again with different settings and report back. The thought of hands-free oats for a family of 6 is very appealing :)

Thank you for all your recipes. They are all so delicious. xx

Oh no! Sorry to hear that, Donna. We’re not sure what would be causing that, but will do some experimenting on our end as well. Let us know if you figure it out!

        • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerSupport @ Minimalist Baker says

Hi Donna, we did some more experimenting and couldn’t replicate the issue. Are you using old-fashioned rolled oats? Did you make sure to stir before cooking?

          • Donna says

Hi, I am in Ireland (Happy St Patricks Day!) and I’m using Jumbo Oats. The description on the pack says its a ‘whole uncut oat that is rolled’. I am definitely stirring before cooking and also tried the instant pot on lower temp and got the same message. I was thinking maybe they are too heavy and are ‘sinking’ to the bottom of the IP and burning.

I’ve used only rice milk and wondering if half water/ half DF milk would work better. I did make a lovely mess with the overflow in the instant pot and haven’t gotten around to more experimenting yet :)

Let me know if you have any insight.
Thanks so much for your help
            Donna.

Thanks for this additional info! We’d definitely suggest only using half water. Hope that helps!

        • Lexie says

This also happens to me. I’ve tried it multiple times and looooove how the not burned part comes out. But I hate having to clean up all of the mess from the burn every time, so if you figure it out please let me know! So good :)

          • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerSupport @ Minimalist Baker says

Hi Lexie, are you using half water and half dairy-free milk? Or only dairy-free milk? What type of milk?

          • Lexie says

After reading your comment it gave me one more idea so I tried it and it worked! I had been using 1 part oats 2.5 parts milk, but I tried substituting the milk for half milk and half water. Also I used the pressure cooker on level low. Not sure which one did it, but it worked! Yay!!! I assumed I could do whole part with actual milk… I’m trying to get it into my little ones diet in any sneaky way I can. But maybe that doesn’t work?

          • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerSupport @ Minimalist Baker says

We’re so glad it worked better! Thanks for the update! Based on other readers who have had this issue, it does sound like using all milk causes problems.

I just made this recipe, as written, in my Instant Pot Duo, with all water. I used “porrige” setting. Added some cream and brown sugar afterwards. Worked great! I want to try pot in pot next time, so want to clarify: should I put the proportion 1:2 oats to water in small pot, put 1 cup of water in big pot, put small pot uncovered on trivet and run on manual for 3 min, natural release?
      Thank you!

      • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerSupport @ Minimalist Baker says

Hi Helen, we don’t have experience using the pot in pot method. Maybe another reader will be able to chime in on that?

  53. Ella says

I seriously did not know oatmeal could be this good. I have made it every single morning on the stove for years, but I tried this recipe today and it was PERFECT! The creamiest, most delicious oats I have ever had. I used 1 cup of rolled oats and 2 cups of cashew milk, and I was able to prepare my toppings while it cooked instead of constantly stirring and adjusting the heat. Total game changer! Thank you for this recipe, Dana!!

  54. Alycia says

I love the texture of the oatmeal and how hands off it is! Made it with 3 cups of oats and 7 cups unsweetened almond milk. Thanks for all the instant pot recipes!

Are these oats, as reheated via a microwave? Any recommendations to keep them tasting great, creamy, and not to thick/thin using a microwave as a reheating method?

    • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerDana @ Minimalist Baker says

Definitely, reheat on the stovetop over medium heat, adding a bit more dairy-free milk as needed to rehydrate.

      • Linda says

Hi Dana Thanks for the recipe. I want to make 4 cups of oats with 10 cups of almond milk. Do I change the cooking time from 2 minutes ? If so, what would be the best time to set the IP ?

        • Avatar for Dana @ Minimalist BakerSupport @ Minimalist Baker says

Hi Linda, there’s no need to change the cook time. The only thing you need to be careful about is whether it will fit in your Instant Pot. For foods that expand, Instant Pot recommends not filling past the 1/2 line. Hope that helps!

Hello! I just wanted to say that I love your recipes. I made this recipe this morning, and it worked really well! It produced filling, soft, creamy oats that my family loved. I used 1.75 cups of old-fashioned oats, 1.5 cups of flax milk, and 1.5 cups of water. I served it with chia seeds.
