Assortment of plant-based protein bars for our unbiased healthy protein bar review

There are times when you need something quick, easy, and portable to get you through to the next meal. We get it. And since you all enjoyed our protein powder reviews so much, we decided it was time to bring protein bars into the mix.

As with our unbiased protein powder reviews (vanilla, chocolate, and flavored), we did a formal, side-by-side review of a variety of plant-based protein bars on the market. Our goal was to see which protein bars delivered on taste and nutrition and which ones weren’t worth the hype, saving you the time and money of doing the research yourself!

THE GROUND RULES //

  • We tested 14 protein bars (and 4 honorable mentions). Of the 14 bars tested, all contain at least 8 grams of protein and fewer than 10 grams of sugar per bar. Honorable mentions were bars that did not meet these criteria but were uniquely beneficial in another way.
  • When possible, we included similar flavors from different brands to more accurately compare them head-to-head.
  • Some of the bars are available on Amazon and others were found from other online retailers or at health food stores.
  • This review is not sponsored in any way. We were not given free product or compensated for any of our reviews, and we had no contact with any of these brands.
  • We excluded any products containing artificial colors, artificial sweeteners, or sugar alcohols.
  • We did our best to include products with high-quality ingredients and minimal added sugar. All brands tested include primarily plant-based ingredients. A few of the bars did include honey, which is noted.
  • We tried to be as unbiased and objective as possible when reviewing.
  • We graded the protein bars on a scale of 1-5 (1 being poor, 5 being excellent) on:
    • Accuracy of stated flavor
    • Texture
    • General taste
    • Overall thoughts
  • For consumer awareness, we also examined:
    • Type of protein base (i.e. brown rice, pea, hemp)
    • Grams of protein per bar
    • Cost per bar (US $) — subject to variability
    • Type of sweetener(s)
    • Additives — potentially undesirable ingredients added to improve flavor, texture, improve shelf life, etc.

Why is protein important?

Protein is a component of all of the cells in our bodies. It supports the production of enzymes, hormones, and so much more to keep us feeling good!

How much protein do we need?

The Institute of Medicine has recommended that adults consume 0.80 grams of protein daily per kg of body weight. For example, it’s recommended that an adult weighing 150 pounds (68 kg) consume ~54 grams of protein per day.

The bars tested in this review (including the honorable mentions) contain between 5 g and 15 g of protein per serving.

Why protein bars?

Chances are, if you are eating a nutritionally balanced diet, you are probably consuming enough protein.

However, there are times when cooking or refrigeration isn’t realistic or possible — that’s when protein bars come in extra handy.

Though we prefer to have most of our snacks and meals closer to their “from the farm” roots, we find protein bars to be a great option when traveling or on-the-go!

Accuracy of stated flavor: 4.5 – tastes nice and peanut buttery, but it is confusing that the package does not disclose that it also has chocolate
Texture: 4.5 – holds together well and has a nice chewy texture
General taste: 4.5 – not much artificial taste — just tastes like peanut butter chocolate and is really pleasant
Overall thoughts: 4.5 – texture and taste are pretty spot on and it is remarkably low in sugar; could be a little more peanut buttery

Texture: 3.5 – firm and chewy bar, holds together well, but you have to work to eat it and it has noticeable seeds
General taste: 4 – has a faint protein powder-esque taste, but it does mostly taste like peanut butter
Overall thoughts: 4 – was better than expected, but not amazing

General taste: 3.5 – initially lemon zest and sweet exterior is nice, but the inside tastes like protein bar

Texture: 3 – firm like a candy bar, but crumbles when touched — has unexpected and large pieces of crunch and texture
General taste: 3.5 – pleasant, but underwhelming — smell created the expectation for something more satisfying and flavorful
Overall thoughts:
3.75 – smells like a lemon Girl Scout cookie, has good ingredients, and doesn’t taste bad, but it is too crunchy and lacks flavor

Accuracy of stated flavor: 3 – very faint chocolate flavor, has more fruit undertones, and you can definitely taste the sea salt, but in an overwhelming way
Texture: 3.5 – stays together and is similar to a chewy baked oatmeal cookie in texture
General taste: 2.75 – not very enjoyable and doesn’t taste chocolatey — not sure where the fruity taste is coming from

    Banana bread? Apple Pie? etc.
    There baked apparently, so not like lara bars (fruit and nut)

    I’d like to throw one of my favorites into the hat, and that is GoMacro. I love those bars! They are vegan, and organic, and so delicious!

    They are a bit higher in sugar content, the only “con.” Oatmeal chocolate chip, peanut butter chocolate, maple, and lemon are my favorite flavors but they are all good.

    Your review of vegan/gluten-free protein bars is helpful in assessing protein and sugar content. But a factor not discussed that can be important for people carefully monitoring their macros is fat content. The vast majority of high-protein vegan bars has very high fat content— often more fat grams than protein grams, and always far more fat calories than protein calories. High protein AND lower fat are my top priorities, with sugar content being the third consideration. Good taste, of course, remains key.

    Based on those criteria, the “good! Snacks” Choc PB bar comes out on top for me. The protein (15g)-to-fat (10g) ratio is better than any of the other bars that are ranked, the sugar( 9g) is tolerable to me, and the taste and texture are really good. I wonder if the fava beans, which aren’t a common ingredient in protein bars, contribute to the nice taste and texture. I have never detected the slight bitter taste you refer to in the review.

    I am not a fan of any of the other “good! Snacks” flavors I have tasted (haven’t had the lemon flavor yet), but the Choc PB is far superior in taste to any other vegan protein bar I have had in the many years I have eaten vegan protein bars.

    This was the most useful vegan bar review I have found. Thank you very much for all that strenuous study (and sometimes tedious tasting). The only room I saw for improvement would be (1) a table comparing the various factors rated and (2) a mention in each review of the bar’s weight, which would put in perspective such criteria as price and grams of protein and sugar.

    My favorite has been the Munk Pack protein cookies – they’re just huge so each one is like 2 protein bars. Tastier than the other protein cookies!

      I checked these out: It appears that, temporarily, at least, they are not quite vegan because of traces of milk in their chocolate supply. See answer to “How are these plant based if it contains milk?”

        When it’s an allergen warning aka “May contain traces of milk” most vegans consider that vegan. It is used when food is made on the same equipment where other food that’s not vegan is also made. The company doesn’t use any animal ingredients, it just means that they don’t use the rigorous cleaning procedures that are needed to make something allergen-free (like when it says “made in a nut-free facility”. that takes a lot of work). Doing that wouldn’t have any effect on the amount of animal products used by whatever company makes the other food. Even vegan certified foods can have allergen warnings. Hope this makes sense.

    WoW! So many bars! I wonder if you’ve heard of the Garden of Life High Protein weight loss bar. It is the only one I have tried, other than VEGA protein bars. I will have to try some of these that you tested. Thanks!

An alternative-milk review would be really awesome as well… soy, almond, oat, hemp… so many choices, so many brands. And I’d love to know how you think they stack up in things like oatmeal vs baking cookies vs cake vs smoothies! Love your work :)

    I‘ve been obsessed with REDD bars for the past year and can’t stop talking about how good they are with the new formula (they sort of taste marshmallowey? Texture-wise. In a great way). As a lover of the mint flavour, I felt the need to redeem them from their low ranking on this list. I don’t find the mint overpowering, and while it does taste like artificial mint, I’m a huge fan of mint chocolate in general, which almost always tastes like artificial mint. If you’re a big mint chocolate person, you will like this mint chocolate bar! But also my #1 REDD bar and #1 protein bar is the plain chocolate flavour — BUY IT! I promise. You won’t regret. It’s even better than the PB one. Chocolate chips are out of this world – chunky, not bitter at all, perfect…..
