These energy bites are made with 6 simple ingredients in less than 30 minutes!

The base is my favorite natural sweetener: dates!

  • I love dates because they’re nature’s caramel and boast minerals like zinc, potassium, magnesium, and iron!
  • Walnuts come next, which add protein and are high in omega 3 fatty acids.
  • Cacao powder adds rich chocolate flavor as well as phytonutrients, magnesium, and iron.
  • Almond butter provides even more protein as well as vitamin E, manganese, and biotin.
  • And hemp seeds add omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, iron, magnesium, and zinc. Plus, they’re a perfect protein, boasting 20 amino acids, including the 9 essential amino acids.

I think we can all agree that this is one healthy snack.

Dark Chocolate Hemp Energy Bites

Ingredients

  • 1 cup packed pitted dates (medjool is best)
  • 2 cups raw walnuts
  • 6 Tbsp cacao powder or unsweetened cocoa powder (plus more for rolling)
  • 3 Tbsp hemp seeds (plus more for rolling)
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt
  • 3 Tbsp creamy almond butter (or other nut or seed butter)
  • 1 Tbsp melted coconut oil (optional // for extra fudgy texture)

Instructions

  • Add dates to a food processor and pulse/mix until small bites remain or a ball forms. Scoop out and set aside.
  • Add walnuts to the food processor and pulse into a fine meal. Then add cacao powder, hemp seeds and sea salt. Pulse a few more times to combine. (Don't overmix or the walnuts will turn into butter.)
  • Add the dates back in along with the almond butter and melted coconut oil (optional). Mix/pulse to combine. The result should be a moist dough-like mixture. If too wet, add a bit more cacao powder or hemp seeds.
  • Refrigerate for 10 minutes. Then scoop out rounded Tablespoon amounts (I like this scoop) and carefully form into balls. The dough will be somewhat fragile, so use the warmth of your hands to gently form/roll them into balls. There should be about 20 energy bites total (amount as original recipe is written // adjust if altering batch size).
  • Roll in extra hemp seeds or cacao powder (optional). Note: The bites get a fudgy, sticky outer texture when rolled in cacao powder - which I liked. But for less sticky energy bites, stick with hemp seeds!
  • Store leftovers in a well-sealed container in the refrigerator up to 1 week or in the freezer up to 1 month.

    YUM! I used all hemp seeds as I didn’t have walnuts on hand. Also, rolled them in a mixture of hemp seeds, cocoa, and sea salt. I used THC infused coconut oil, so will only eat one at a time ;)

    OMG!!! These taste amazing and so simple to make. Definitely going to be making them again!! Even our kids ate them, finally something we all like. One is enough, but so hard to stop at just one!! Included the coconut oil and was perfectly fudgy! My daughter rolled them in fine coconut shreds, raw cacao and/or hemp hearts.

    Amazing recipe, I love how customizable it is. If using roasted almonds I’ve found 1.5 cups to be a good amount, even less depending on stickiness of dates.

    I’ve also tried adding leftover meal from the coconut cashew oat milk recipe. I reduced walnuts to 1.25 cups, subbed 1 tablespoons of nut butter with coconut butter and I got the fudgiest texture possible.

    Very delicious recipe! I have made these multiple times. I use the pulse setting on my ninja blender as I don’t have a food processor and I find they turn out great every time.

    I made these and covered them in melted chocolate and rolled them in finely processed coconut shreds. I gave one to my son, and after taking just one bite, he immediately said, “I’m going to need another one.” Haha! These are the best kinds of desserts and snacks to make. They freeze well and are ready for when those snack attacks hit for active boys (and their mommas!) :D

    Hello Dana, hello people!
    Thank you for this recipe. Today is the second time I made it. Just like others, I also added a little more of certain things.
    Extras:
    1/2 cup of dates
    1 tbps of hempseeds
    1 tbsp of infused cannabis coconut oil(Super fudgy)
    Also I rolled some in cacau powder, oats hempseeds, coconut, brown sugar and Cacau nibs so they all look different.

    Delicious and so easy!! Key is to soak the dates in water that has just boiled so that it’s super easy to blend up. I doubled the salt amount and rolled them in hemp seeds. I also added 1/2 Tablespoon of coconut oil which did help keep them sticking together better. Perfection, and my 8-year-old and 5-year-olds loved forming the bites and rolling them in hemp seeds. Will be making these as a staple treat and storing in the freezer!!

    Love this recipe! I only have a blender, but everything worked perfectly. Just made sure to not to pulse the mixtures too much since it would be easier to overwork in a blender. These are a weekly staple for me now!

    I made this recipe and it was fa-buh-lous! FIVE STARS!
    I swapped out the 2 cups raw walnuts for 2 cups of Brazil nuts (it’s what I randomly had on hand) and it was a delicious and comparable substitution.
    This recipe was quick, easy, nutritious, and fun! (I especially enjoyed hand rolling the optional cacao powder and hemp seed dusting finale! The fudgey result was incredible!)

    I made this recipe and liked it so much I immediately made a second batch to share with friends! I swapped walnuts for pecans, as I had some in the pantry, already ground. The second time around I cut the cocoa powder to 1/4 cup (as I found that the first batch was a touch too bitter) and replaced my missing 2 tbsp of dry ingredients with some supplementary fiber (metamucil, no flavor), as well as an extra tbsp of hemp seeds as my mixture was a bit wet. The second batch yeilded 24 bites, all of which I rolled in hemp seeds. Next time, I may add more fiber and play around with the wet ingridients – I would like 1 serving of 3 bites to have 10-12g of fiber. That way one healthy snack would pack half of my fiber intake for the day! It’s simply delicious and easy to modify! This recipe is a keeper.

    Rich, chocolate-y, fudge-y goodness — these are amazing AND they’re healthy. I added some cacao nibs and rolled 1/3 in cacao, 1/3 in hemp seeds, and left a 1/3 unrolled. Perfect snack or dessert when you’re craving some guilt-free sweetness. If you’re considering making them, just do it. You won’t be disappointed.

    Made these almost exactly as the recipe says except I only had 1 tbs of of coconut oil so added 1 tbs of ghee plus 1 tbs melted cacao butter, then used coconut shreds to roll them in. So not really “almost exactly” at all but they are fantastic! I’m on a Whole30 diet right now and these are a great grab-n-go breakfast.

    Oh my goodness thank you SO MUCH for this recipe! When I was travelling in New Zealand I found these delicious energy bites, can’t buy them anywhere else in the world and I was desperately looking for a similar recipe to make them myself – and I have finally found it! Your recipe is perfect!
    To make them just like the ones I had in NZ, I swapped the walnuts for hazelnuts and used peanut butter instead of almond butter. And I didn’t use hemp seeds, but shaved coconut for the coating.     Absolutely incredible! So easy and so delicious! I have made these a few times now and they are so easily adjustable. This last time I made them I didn’t use any coconut oil but instead used a little more of the nut oil which this time was a mixture of cashew butter and sunflower seed butters. Then rolled them in crumbled toasted almonds since I just love that taste. I also added a little bit of ground flax seed to the whole mixture. The salt is essential. Thank you Dana et al, this recipe is brilliant!

I had to try your recipe and improvised: carob powder for cacao, pecans and cashews for walnuts and cashew butter for almond butter.     These are soooooo legit! They’re like…cake! I made a few changes and they’re still a fudgy ball of goodness. I cannot wait to try peanut butter and powder pb to roll them in ;)

    These are the changes/additions I did:
    1 additional tbsp of cacao,
    halved the coconut oil and used 1/2 tbsp (I have unrefined and I worried it’d be too coconutty and not the flavor I wanted currently),
    added 1/4 cup of plain protein powder
    added 1 tbsp chia for a crunch
    added approx. 3 tbsp almond milk…I eyeballed, just to get the meal going a bit cause the protein powder can be dry

    So good. I dunno how I’m going to resist just smooshing it together and eating it by the handful…

    Great recipe! The dates were a bit annoying to get chopped up but eventually it turned into a ball in the processor like you said. I added a bit of vanilla to the mix and at the end I mixed in gluten free rolled oats by hand. Turned out wonderful!

    I love these!! Have played around with the recipe quite a bit and my fav variation is one cup pecans and one cup hazelnuts and 1/2 cup shredded unsweetened coconut. Soo deeeelish! Of course, the original recipe is always a winner in my book as well!! :)

    What a delicious little treat! Rich enough to satisfy my sweet tooth, but I feel good eating them for a healthy afternoon snack. I subbed chia seeds for the hemp seeds and peanut butter for almond butter, then rolled them in cacao powder and coconut. Will be doubling the recipe next time for sure!

    Messy to make and eat but OH SO DELICIOUS! Totally satisfies my craving for a fudgy brownie but way healthier. I don’t bother with the coconut oil and I roll them in cocoa powder. Amazing. And yes, the dough will seem very crumbly at first, but I just press it together with my hands and the balls form easily.

    I’d love to say that I’ve made this recipe twice, but I’ve used the base of this recipe and what I had on hand to make these twice. Both times they turned out great. The first time I used chia seeds instead of hemp, pecans instead of walnuts and peanut butter instead of almond butter.     These are the most delicious things! This is the first time I have had dates in anything (other than Larabars, which I love) and I quite like them as a dessert alternative, even though they are still loaded with sugar. This recipe was really fantastic. I used peanut butter and I love the mixture of flavours and textures- sweet, salt, crunchy, mushy, peanut-buttery, chocolatey. I did more coated with hemp seeds than cacao powder because I found it easier to control how much coating I was adding. I look forward to trying variations, like with chia seeds or shredded coconut (which I’ll love, I’m sure).

    I added 1 scoop of my LeanFit complete green protein powder, an additional Tbsp of nut butter, the coconut oil as you suggested and rolled them in raw sesame seeds and holy moly… super delish! This is def my new go to recipe for energy bites now :)

    Okay…..so seriously, this are amazing. I’ve made them twice now. I made the first batch with chocolate chips since I was out of cocoa powder. I also used 1 cup of almonds and 1 cup of pecans because my walnuts went bad. The second batch I used cocoa powder and almonds/pecans. They are AMAZING. SO DELICIOUS. I’ve been taking them to school with me, and they are a great source of protein and healthy fats. They are a great way to get the omega-3’s in with the hemp seeds, and I love that they are only sweetened with dates! Such a mild sweetness, and soooo delicious! My kids loved them too!
    Also, thank you so much for everything you do. I love food and I love healthy eating (I’m studying to be a Dietitian) so it’s a great resource for me to be able to make your recipes knowing that you put thoughtfulness into the ingredients, and have such a focus on plant-based foods!

    I made this yesterday! They are really delicious, and filling – a great quick meal replacement. They didn’t come out as sweet as I was hoping, (I might have added more unsweetened chocolate than what was called for :) so I added some stevia after, by hand. Next time I think I’ll add it (or maybe agave or maple syrup) to the nut mixture before adding back the wetter ingredients. But they’re REALLY great! Thank you!

    These are so good!! I used homemade peanutbutter, and they turned out delicious. By the way, the info about how to store leftovers is quite uneccessary. Mine barely made it to the fridge – never came even close to the freezer :-)

I was low on dates so I had to wait until I went to the store until I made these, but I finally did today and O.M.G. These are incredible and very hard to believe there is no added sugar in these.     These are so good.

    Couple of changes:
    I didn’t have hemp seeds anymore so I used flax seeds. I also didn’t have enough walnuts so i did half walnuts and half almonds. And in the end i coated the balls in coconut flakes.

    Delicious base recipe though, thank you!!

    I made these with half walnuts and half pecans and rolled them in hemp seeds. They’re so yummy! I may try them with peanut butter in place of the almond butter next time so they taste like peanut butter cups.

    What an amazing recipe! I made these tonight but I’m not a fan of hemp seed so I substituted 1.5 tbsp of ground sunflower and 1.5 tbsp of ground sesame seed into the mixture. Once formed I rolled them in the cacao powder then unsweetened coconut! They are now called amaze-balls in my house.

    Hi Dana I was so excited when I saw this recipe that I made them right away. I did add the coconut oil and I used crunchy almond butter instead. Unfortunately they arent sticking together at all so I tried to press it into a 8×8 pan and make squares after they sat in the fridge overnight but no luck. Add more almond butter? Or maybe the dates weren’t blended enough? My food processor is really old too. Spoonfuls of the “dough” are delicious though.

      Hmm, sounds like maybe the dates weren’t fresh enough OR they weren’t blended finely enough! Add more dates or almond butter next time!

    I made these this afternoon for our Mardi Gras dessert and an event I’m hosting this weekend. My son has a nut allergy so I replace all nuts with sunflower seed and sunbutter. It was good but to me it was too much sunflower.
    My second batch I made with pumpkin seeds and sunbutter instead, SO MUCH BETTER! Didn’t over power the cacao powder like the sunflower seeds did.

    I thought i I had all of the ingredients to make this. Turns out I did not have dates. Or almond butter. So I tried it with molasses and peanut butter. Still turned out delicious, although as the mixture was more wet it absorbed the cocoa powder coating instead of acting as a sticky barrier. Great base recipe!

      Your Vitamix should work! You may have to give it a couple stirs to make sure it mixes throughout though!

      Hi Lenore! Hemp seeds are a great protein source and healthy fats! You can find them in most grocery stores! Flax seeds may be a good replacement but I haven’t tested!
