Sometimes, “real” food sounds exhausting and you just want something quick and easy to throw into your purse and call “lunch” without anyone judging you.

Well, consider this a judgment free zone. And if today is one of those days, here is my solution: Energy bites!

I’m kind of into quick and easy right now.

Warmer weather has meant more adventuring for us and I love having snacky things on hand for sporadic activities. I’m like that weird friend of yours with all the mom things in her purse who doesn’t actually have any kids. No sign of babies around here, just so many snacks.

So, energy bites! 5 ingredients:

Dates
Peanut butter
Chia seeds
Oats
Dairy-free dark chocolate

The good news about these little gems is they’re totally customizable! No peanut butter? Sub any other nut butter. Not into chocolate (seriously Rhonda?)? Omit it and add more oats and chia seeds. Never heard of chia seeds? Sub flax or hemp seeds. It’s that easy friends.

This is basically hippie cookie dough. Take a spoon and eat it straight. (Who on Earth would do such a thing? Me –  I would.)

Or reach down in there and roll the batter into little portable energy bites.

EASY, 5 ingredient peanut butter energy bites sweetened with dates and studded with oats, dark chocolate and chia seeds! Full of fiber, protein and healthy fats.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup dates (pitted // if dry, soak in warm water for 10 minutes, then drain well)
  • 3 Tbsp all-natural salted peanut or almond butter
  • 1/4 cup dairy-free dark chocolate (roughly chopped)
  • 1 Tbsp chia seeds (or sub flax or hemp seeds)
  • 2/3 cup gluten-free rolled oats

Instructions

  • Pulse pitted dates in a food processor or blender until they’re in small pieces or it forms a ball (see photo).
  • Add oats, chocolate, chia seeds and peanut butter and pulse or mix until combined. You want there to be consistently small pieces but not overly processed.
  • Carefully roll into 1-inch balls (29-30 grams per ball), using the warmth of your hands to mold them together. Should yield 14-15 balls (amount as original recipe is written // adjust if altering batch size).
  • To set, pop in fridge or freezer for 15 minutes. Otherwise, eat as is! Will keep fresh in an air-tight bag or container for up to a week. Freeze for longer term storage.

    I just HAD to have some chocolate but I’m avoiding fat and processed sugar so these were perfect! Made them with cocoa powder instead of bar chocolate and added some chopped almonds. Oh yeah!

    Thanks for the recipe !! I used date paste instead of dates and everything became very moist so I couldn’t make balls out of it. What can I add to make it more solid next time?

    I used 14 tsp (one tsp per ball) of maca powder instead of oats. I also added a splash of coffee to the dates to help puree them. My mini food processor was perfect here.

    That was pretty good! I didn’t have chocolate, so mixed a few choc chips, cacao nibs, some shredded coconut, hemp seeds, and a bit of cacao powder :)
    Started in my blender but it didn’t really move much, so finished it in my food processor.

    Just made these delicious morsels, yes, I had 1 or 2 before putting in the fridge to set… who wouldn’t.
    I only made one change to this, I added one tbsp of cocoa,
    “Oh hell yeah”!

    Perfect little, easy treats that are super quick and easy to make!

    The only planning is to give some time to soak the dates if they are dry to start. I had to soak them longer than 10 minutes, but I used tap water. Next time I’ll use warm/hot water. My dough was still a little dry/crumbly so I had to add a little liquid (soy milk) to get the dough to come together. My only “complaint” is that the chia seeds get stuck in my teeth- obviously has nothing to do with the recipe but is a user error, LOL, so I might switch to flax meal next time.

    Which is why I love this recipe even more because it’s very adaptable using different butters, cacao nibs/powder vs chocolate chips, different seeds, etc.

    I bought dates on an utter whim, because grocery store had Palestinian dates and I couldn’t refuse. So, I made these last month and they were SO GOOD as a snack with a glass of milk, a quick grab from the freezer so I can maximise the use of my breaks! I may be working from home, but I still have a set schedule! Gonna make these again today or tomorrow. ❤️

    I noticed you don’t recommend soaking the oats. I did some reading and found one blogger who recommended soaking oats before using for anything, otherwise they can be harder to digest and cause bloating. Thoughts? I’m also wondering what would happen if you soak the oats and then mix them into energy balls. You would need a way to balance the wet ingredients.

    Also, I’ve been curious for a while about using Chia dry. Some people recommend drinking more water if you plan to eat Chia dry. Also wondering if cooking Chia causes loss of nutrients. What are your thoughts on that?

      Hi Jessica, soaking should improve digestibility, but it’s mostly a matter of whether you’re willing/able to do the extra effort. If soaking, you would need to dehydrate in the oven before adding to the energy bites. For chia seeds, we aren’t aware of cooking causing loss of nutrients, but it’s possible. They do absorb a lot of water, so it’s not a bad idea to drink with water. Hope that helps!

    Super easy and delicious. I subbed cocoa powder (1.5 TBSP) for the chocolate, and it’s still super sweet and chocolatey. I definitely recommend soaking the dates in water for at least 30 minutes.

    Hey ! Thanks for this recipe. I made these tonight following the recipe to the letter, including soaking the dates. Unfortunately it bogged down my food processor so much I thought it was broken, the blades wouldn’t spin at all! I tried adding a couple of table spoons and water and stirring the mixture and that didn’t seem to help. Any tips? Would there be a role for honey/maple syrup? Maybe fewer oats or dates? open to all suggestions as the spoonful of everything together tasted really good!

    Really enjoyed these! They feel like a treat that isn’t totally *overindulging*. I skipped soaking the dates because I had just bought them and they didn’t feel “dry”, but I had a really difficult time getting them to blend so don’t skip soaking the dates. Another keeper recipe!

    Super fast and super easy! A food processor certainly helps. My picky 14 year old boy and 12 year old daughter approve as does my hubby. Just subbed almond butter for my peanut allergic son. Found rolled oats at the back of my pantry. Used the processor to help chop up the choc chips before processing the dates. Didn’t even need to coat with toasted dried coconut but certainly could if desired

    These are delicious! I used natural crunchy peanut butter and a bit of agave for extra sweetener. Then rolled them in fine coconut ?? Doubled the recipe as others suggested, glad I did as they won’t last long!

    I made this and it was so thick that is actually broke my VitaMix, but luckily it is under warranty. Was too pissed off to finish that the mixture has just been left in my fridge.

    The chia seeds give these SUCH a delightful and satisfying texture… I recently have become obsessed with dates and all-date-things and these filled the craving splendidly while being so easy, with minimal prep and minimal effort.     These are a miracle! I am a university student who also works, and most mornings I need to be out the door by 7 AM. Since classes started back up, I’ve just been skipping breakfast & eating whenever I have time in between lectures. These energy bites have been a life saver! They’re super easy to make & the most expensive things on the ingredients list are the dates. I just make a double batch at the beginning of the week and bring 2 or 3 to work with me every day. So far, no more hunger headaches while I wait for a break in my schedule!

    Hi, I really like this recipe! I just made it today and it is very simple and easy. I learned my dates are a bit dry after I blended them with most of the ingredients and they didn’t seem to hold together – BUT I knew of an idea and it happened to work: I have some unsweetened applesauce and added just a heaping tablespoon and that did the trick. They came together well and held into balls nicely. They are resting gently in the fridge now, minus the few that we couldn’t resist eating right away!     Wow! I wanted something decadent but also something that I wouldn’t feel too guilty eating. This is it.     I made these today. I don’t think I put enough dates in the first time, they didn’t seem very sticky at first. I added a handful more of dates and another tablespoon of peanut butter. Then they stuck together and are absolutely delicious.

    These are really delicious with cashew butter – for a much more subtle nut flavor. The only chocolate I had was the cherry + almond dark chocolate Chocolove bar and it was amazing. Recommended!

    Just made these and I’m already onto my third one …ooops hahah

    However I don’t know where I went wrong but the mixture was super super sticky and when I went to make a ball it literally just smushed into my palms LOL..
    I then wet my hands and was able to form the balls but it wasn’t quite the texture I thought it would come out as (just because it was a little tricky to make the balls).
    Popped them into the fridge for a couple hours to set nicely and they are delish!

    Just wondering what I can do next time round so I don’t struggle too much with making the balls and the super sticky mixture? (I know it needs to be sticky to stick but it was literally stuck to my hands and not forming a ball >.< )

    Sooooo good! I’m a dancer and often have short breaks to eat, so I can’t wait to show up to the studio with these bad boys. I love how easily customizable they are. I doubled the chia seeds, and instead of chopping and adding the chocolate, I melted the chocolate (and added cinnamon), then completely coated the balls, and sprinkled with finely chopped walnuts and hazelnuts. They kinda look like Ferrero Rochers!

    These were a big hit in our house. My husband absolutely loved them. They are very easy to make. We were going out to the park and I simply let the dates soak while packing up other things. I loved how just one satisfied my chocolate craving. I do have some concerns about taking the on trips where an ice pack or cooler are available. They could get a bit messy. That definitely won’t stop me from making them again !

    Great for vegans/gluten free!

    I added 1 tablespoon maple syrup and a half tablespoon of cacao for added flavour and to bind the mixture together.

    These have become a weekly meal prep staple in our house! They are the perfect after work snack which hold me over on the car ride home. So easy to make and modify, based on what we have in our cupboard. So far we’ve tried adding shredded coconut and hazelnuts (just a few or they become overpowering). We also made the last batch without peanut butter because we ran out, and they still stuck together nicely.

    I am nearly 39 weeks pregnant and heard that dates can help with labor. I’m not a big date fan so I made this recipe as written in hopes that I would be able to devour some dates. These are amazing!!! The chocolate and peanut butter are really the perfect flavor combo. I made a double batch thinking that I might freeze some to keep on hand for after the baby comes, but I don’t know that they’ll last that long! Thanks for a great recipe!

    Made these in my vitamix tonight. So yummy! My boyfriend thought they tasted like “cookies.” I added a teaspoon of coconut oil to add a little moisture. My dates weren’t dry, but I still felt like it needed a little more moisture. I think the little bit of coconut oil did the trick! I used cacao nibs for the chocolate. Otherwise I followed the recipe! Thank you for great content!!!

    I made these tonight. I used baking dates, which were a lot cheaper and already kind of puried, so I didn’t have to bother with the food processor. I also added a few crumbled up pecans and it gave them another layer of texture. I heated the dates up in the microwave for a very short time and it made everything real easy to mix together. These are very good- I’m excited to have one with my coffee tomorrow morning!

    I think this might be an updated recipe. I wanted to post it to a Japan Vegetarian group, but I have this recipe. Is it yours? Date and Nut No Bake Energy Bites

    ½ cup roasted, unsalted nuts. Peanuts, almonds, walnuts, etc.
    1 cup dates* – I did not soak mine.
    1 cup rolled oats
    1 Tblspn chia seeds
    1 teaspn cinnamon
    2 Tblspn honey
    1. Add the nuts to the food processor and pulse a few times.
    2. Add in the dates and pulse again.
    3. Next, add in the oats, chia seeds, cinnamon. Process until a dough begins to form.
    4. Add the honey and pulse to mix.
    5. With slightly damp hands, roll the dough into balls roughly 1 inch in diameter.
    6. Store in an airtight container. They will last for at least a week on your counter and longer in the fridge (if you haven’t eaten them all by then!).

    Thank you for this recipe! I’ve just starting trying to make energy bites and have made them twice now and it was so good! My husband really liked them too. I used sunflower butter and added cranberries to my second batch. I don’t have a food processor so I used my magic bullet which took quite a while for everything to come together can the ingredients kept clumping up and not blending well so I had to scrape and shake the bullet multiple times. It’s still worth the effort though! I’ll be using this to add my own variations in the future!

    These are one of my favorite snack balls of all time! Seriously, never a let-down when I pack them for work for a snack. They taste like Reece’s or Butterfinger and just one or 2 will tide you over. Really like how fast they come together and how few ingredients it requires, and if you’ve made similar versions before, you know they can be versatile for flavors, as long as you know how to keep the right consistency. I added cinnamon the second time, and then thought of having a Mexican chocolate version somehow, but decided to not potentially ruin a good thing and stop there. :D Anyway, love ’em.

    Hi, I’ve just come across this scrumptious sounding recipe and intend to make them asap… I just have a quick question regarding how ‘sticky’ they are as I’d like to add some protein powder to the mix for a good high protein energy snack. Would they combine as well with the added powder or would you suggest adding a drop of water/coconut oil/coconut nectar etc?

    I can’t wait to try them as I have had medjool dates hanging around my kitchen just waiting for the perfect recipe :)

      Hi Jenny! I think adding some protein powder would work! Like you’re thinking, I agree that you may need to add some additional liquids to the recipe in the event that the protein powder dries it out – but add as needed!

    I made these and they are awesome. i put in chopped up cashews. Any suggestions for a replacement for the oats? i put hemp seeds in it and they were fine but was wondering if there was something else i could use.

    FYI my husband even enjoyed them and he was hesitant at first because they were Vegan LOL. Making them again today. They are very good cold. I keep mine in the freezer. They don’t freeze to the point that you can’t eat them right away.

        DON’T FOR GET TO PIT! I litterally destroyed my Kitchen Aid S blade. I wish the recipe had been a little more clear about this process for those who have never worked with dates before. The end product was good but, also DON’T TRY TO PROCESS MORE THAN A CUP OF DATES AT A TIME, this caused my Vitamix to be taxed as well and had to just shut it down and finish by hand. They tasted good in the end though and many lessened learned. I thought it would be a simple recipe!

    Love your recipes and feedback. Your 5 Ingredient Peanut Cup Energy Bites are phenomenal. Best we have found. We are split between PB preference and Almond butter preference, so we tend to make double batch of each, and then press them into a 10×13 pan for bars, rather than rolling into balls.

    Oh my!
    I didn’t have any chocolate so I substituted my attempt at chocolate:
    1/8 cup cocoa
    1 tbsp coconut oil
    1 tsp Stevia
    I also don’t have a food processor. The Vitamix had a hard time moving it, but I got it chopped up enough to dig it out into a bowl and cut the clumps with two knives. After that, it behaved well when rolling into balls.
    Then, OH MY! So scrumptious, and fun texture. Plus, I can’t even detect the weird Stevia flavor. What a wonderful new phase in my snacking life. Thank you so much.

    I tried to make these in my Blendtech and it jammed up the blade. Maybe I didn’t chop the chocolate fine enough. I just didn’t know what setting. And so I added a bit of liquid. Then the mixture was too wet. So then I added more oats and some chopped peanuts. Now the mixture is in the fridge firming up before I attempt to ball them. What did I do wrong?

      Made mine with a few slices of dried apple instead of dates. Next batch was made with fresh apple slices left from a fruit/cheese tray. Both versions were great and the fresh apple version did not overwork the processor motor.

    I gave one of these to my 9 year old sister without telling her what they were. She took one bite and asked me if they were a new Reece’s product (before stuffing her face). I then made the mistake of telling her they were actually good for her which saw a slightly disgusted expression emerge haha. She was soon sneaking them out the fridge whilst I wasn’t looking though.
    Not only are these delicious but they’re really great at tiding you over between meals or when you need a bite to eat without stuffing yourself before (or during) a workout.

    I think this recipe is a good start. When I followed it exactly I didn’t really taste much other than the dates. I adjusted by adding a 4th tablespoon of PB, a few dashes of cocoa powder, and about 1/4 tsp salt to bring out the flavors. Once they were rolled in balls and set, I sprinkled with just a touch more of sea salt and they were perfect. Now the PB/choc flavor is definitely there and the dates don’t overpower.Definitely going in my rotation. My husband ate almost all of them!

    I did not soak the dates to get a longer shelf life out of these(like they’re gonna stay around that long ;)). Used a spiced dark chocolate that I had on hand.. Those warm spices took the taste to the next level! Loving these as a pre workout snack!

    I have made this recipe twice now and these peanut butter cup energy bites disappear very quickly in my house. The first time I followed the recipe and tried to make them in the blender (easier to clean), but I would not recommend it because my blender kept getting jammed up and not mixing all the ingredients together. The second time I made them in the food processor using almond butter instead of peanut butter and thinly sliced almonds instead of rolled oats and they were also very delicious!     Thank you for this recipe. So often vegan sweets that call for dates just make the whole thing taste like one big date that I could have eaten without all the cooking. These taste great and are as much fun to make as they are to eat. I Have cooked a little too much with rolled oats so I substituted unsweetened coconut flour and they are great. I rolled some teeny tiny balls for my toddler daughter – the size of peas that she can pick up and pinch.

    I don’t have any chia, flax or hemp seeds and have never baked with any of those ingredients so have no idea what they could be substituted with. Would sesame seeds work? Or ground almonds? The internet suggests chia seeds sometimes replace eggs in recipes – should I use a egg instead??

    These are awesome! the first time i made them, i had a lot of trouble with everything sticking to my blender, so when i mae them again i blended the dry ingredients first, put them in a bowl, then blended the dates, and added them to the dry ingredients, followed by the peanut butter. it was much easier to mix, and it didnt make a huge mess!

      There are gluten free oats. Bobs red mill makes them. I first found at a natural foods type store but they have recently shown up in Target and my local grocery store. If they say “Gluten free” on the front then they are certified and safe for Celiac patients and similar Gluten intolerant people.

    Related to the comment above, approximately how many dates are in one cup? I always seem to have a problem with this, I either use too many or too few. Are they packed in the cup or loose?

      I’m never sure of this either. I used my kitchen scale and measured out 220g as per the recipe. It seemed like more than a cup, but they turned out great. Guess I should count them next time :)

      In my experience, about 20. But this absolutely depends on the size of your dates. If you can weigh them, 1 cup is about 200 g. Good luck!

    YUM! Just checked and I’ve got everything needed to craft these babies – you just made my husband VERY happy; as soon as he gets home from work!

    One question about the dates. I normally keep mejool dates on hand, but this time I’ve got deglet noor dates. Deglet noor are about 1/2 the size of the mejool variety so do I use 2 cups of deglet noor or just one? Oh, I almost forgot. I bet rolling them in granola or chocolate nibs would be yummy too!

      Update from yesterday. Made them yesterday afternoon. Decided to use 1.5 cups of Deglet Noor dates. They probably have used a few more. They didn’t look like your beauties! I had a hard time getting them to stick together. They look beautiful and my husband says they taste great so it was a success! I wrapped them individually in plastic wrap so they would be easy to grab on the run.

      If you have a kitchen scale perhaps you could measure out 220g (as per the recipe) then the kind of date wouldn’t matter. We rolled ours in coconut and they were delicious! Granola is a great idea too. :)

      Use 1 cup packed of either kind of date. And the recipe is pretty flexible, so if you have too many dates, add more oats to balance it out. And if you din’t add enough, just throw in a few more while blending!

    Hi Dana,

    These look great, and I think I will even put a few in the Easter baskets.

    My son loves the candy with a coconut center and dark chocolate on the outside (Bounty style) . Is there any chance you could devise a recipe in time for the Easter Baskets? :) Thank you , Jennifer

      Hi Jennifer! I actually just made a recipe like this but it’s going in our cookbook (due out this fall)! But for this recipe I would recommend adding some shredded coconut or coconut butter to the recipe and blending per usual! Just scale back on the dates a little bit to compensate.
